Obsidian can hold more than notes you type yourself. Web passages, highlights from digital reading, and passages from print books can all become useful inputs—if you preserve where they came from, explain why they matter, and connect them to an existing note.
1. Web pages and passages you already read
Obsidian Web Clipper is a free browser extension for highlighting pages and saving web content to a vault. It can capture a page with a template, save selected text, and attempts to extract the main article content by default. See Obsidian’s Web Clipper documentation for setup and capture details.
Templates let you shape what a saved note contains, so a clip need not be a full article. You might save a recipe technique, a useful forum answer, documentation for a public dataset, a detail from a product manual, or a passage from a long essay. Those are examples of possible uses, not a guarantee that every site will clip cleanly or that a prebuilt template exists for each one.

- Install Obsidian Web Clipper and configure it to save into the vault and folder you want.
- When reading, select a specific passage if that is all you need; otherwise, let the clipper attempt to capture the page’s main content.
- Use a template to include a title, original URL, author or publisher when available, and the date you captured it.
- Add the excerpt or highlight, then write one sentence explaining why you saved it.
- Link the clip to an existing topic note so it becomes part of an idea you are developing rather than an isolated bookmark.
Keeping the original URL and source details gives you a trail back to the page if it changes or disappears.

2. Digital reading highlights, including Kindle
Readwise’s Obsidian plugin can export highlights from Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Instapaper, Pocket, Medium, Twitter/X, PDFs, and other listed sources. The plugin supports automatic or manual sync and can include metadata such as a source URL, author, chapter headings, tags, and notes. Readwise describes the integration in its Obsidian export documentation and the plugin’s GitHub repository.
This is a paid workflow: the plugin repository says a Readwise subscription is required. You can choose automatic or manual syncing, but do not assume a new highlight will appear immediately. Readwise says some services—including Kindle, Instapaper, and Pocket—sync only a few times daily.

Turn exported highlights into working notes
- Connect the reading services you use to Readwise and authorize the Obsidian export integration.
- Choose manual or automatic syncing based on how much control you want over when material enters your vault.
- Let the export create a page for a new book, article, or account, or append highlights to an existing page.
- Add your own note explaining why a highlight matters, then link the page to a relevant topic note.
Highlight metadata helps identify a passage’s source and context; your interpretation and links make it easier to use in your own thinking.
3. Passages from physical books
Print-book highlights can enter the same pipeline, but Obsidian itself is not a built-in book scanner. Readwise’s import documentation says you can scan, type, or dictate passages from physical books in its app, then send them onward through the Obsidian export integration. That adds an intermediary step and the Readwise subscription requirement.

Capture only the passages worth returning to
- In the Readwise app, scan, type, or dictate a passage that raises a question, offers a useful method, or connects with something you already know.
- Record the book title and author, plus the page number when available.
- Add your interpretation: what question did the passage raise, or what idea does it connect to?
- Export the highlight to Obsidian and link it to the note where that question, method, or connection belongs.
Selective capture makes the work of reviewing and connecting passages more manageable than collecting every marked sentence.
Which capture route fits your reading?
| Route | Sources covered | Capture and sync | Metadata | Cost established by the documentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Web Clipper | Web pages and selected passages | Browser-based capture; can use templates and selected text | Template-based; you can include a title, URL, author or publisher, and capture date | Free browser extension, according to Obsidian |
| Readwise export to Obsidian | Kindle and other supported digital reading services, including Apple Books, Google Play Books, Instapaper, Pocket, Medium, Twitter/X, and PDFs | Automatic or manual export; some connected services sync only a few times daily | Can include source URL, author, chapter headings, tags, and notes | Readwise subscription required for the Obsidian plugin |
| Physical-book highlights through Readwise | Passages from print books | Scan, type, or dictate into the Readwise app, then export to Obsidian | Record the book title, author, page number when available, and your interpretation | Readwise subscription required for the Obsidian export plugin |
There is no side-by-side performance test establishing which route is fastest or produces better notes. Start with the lightest workflow that covers the sources you actually use: the free clipper for web material, or Readwise if bringing highlights together from supported reading services—or from print books—is worth the added subscription and extra step.

Make capture useful by preserving context
Regardless of the source, a captured passage is only an input. Give each saved fragment enough context to remain useful later:
