A 5-star refrigerator usually consumes less tested electricity than a comparable 3-star model, but the label does not promise a fixed rupee saving. To estimate your five-year cost, compare the same capacity and cooling type, read each model’s printed annual energy consumption (AEC), and calculate (3-star AEC − 5-star AEC) × your tariff × 5. Your electricity tariff, not the star number alone, determines the bill difference.

What the BEE star rating actually measures

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) star label is a comparison of tested annual energy consumption within a product category. More stars indicate lower annual consumption under the applicable test and regulatory band; they do not represent a guaranteed percentage reduction in every household’s bill.

BEE defines annual energy consumption as:

Annual Energy Consumption = Daily Energy Consumption in 24 hours × 365 ÷ 1000

For frost-free refrigerators, the test includes steady-state operation plus defrost and recovery energy. Direct-cool refrigerators are evaluated under steady-state conditions. That difference is why comparing a frost-free model with a direct-cool model solely by star count can mislead.

Rating 2023–2024 frost-free AEC band At 280 litres
3-star (0.118 × Vtot + 184) ≤ AEC < (0.136 × Vtot + 211) About 217.04 to below 249.08 kWh/year
5-star AEC < (0.103 × Vtot + 160) Below 188.84 kWh/year

At 280 litres, comparing the lower edge of the 3-star band with the 5-star threshold gives a potential gap of about 60.24 kWh per year, or 301.2 kWh over five years. At an electricity tariff of ₹5.95 per kWh, that illustrative difference is approximately ₹1,792 over five years. It is a band-edge calculation, not a prediction for a particular current model.

How to calculate your own five-year bill difference

  1. Match the products. Use the same capacity, the same cooling design (frost-free or direct-cool), and comparable BEE label periods.
  2. Copy the printed AEC. Record the model number and the label’s kWh/year figure for both refrigerators.
  3. Use your tariff. If your effective rate is ₹7 per kWh, use ₹7 rather than a national average. Include the rate you actually pay for the relevant consumption slab if your utility uses slabs.
  4. Calculate annual energy cost. Multiply AEC by tariff: AEC × tariff.
  5. Calculate five-year energy cost. Multiply the annual result by five: AEC × tariff × 5.
  6. Subtract the costs. Subtract the 5-star refrigerator’s five-year energy cost from the 3-star refrigerator’s five-year energy cost.
  7. Check the purchase premium. If the 5-star model costs more, divide that documented price premium by the annual bill saving for a simple payback estimate. This is meaningful only when both prices and the tariff are known and held constant.

For example, if a 3-star label shows 240 kWh/year and a comparable 5-star label shows 190 kWh/year, at ₹6 per kWh the annual saving is (240 − 190) × 6 = ₹300. The five-year electricity saving would be ₹1,500, assuming the tariff and consumption remain unchanged.

What the government’s 280-litre example shows

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change published a 280-litre frost-free comparison that uses 2-star and 5-star models. It is useful evidence that star-related savings can be substantial, but it must not be presented as a 3-star-versus-5-star result.

280-litre frost-free example AEC Annual electricity cost at ₹5.95/kWh Annual CO₂ figure
2-star 343 kWh/year ₹2,041 Not stated for this row
5-star 219 kWh/year ₹1,303 Not stated for this row
Difference 124 kWh/year ₹738/year 101.68 kg CO₂/year

At the same ₹5.95 tariff, the published difference works out to about ₹3,690 over five years. That total assumes the tariff and operating conditions do not change; it does not establish the saving between a specific 3-star and 5-star pair.

Why your real saving can differ from the label calculation

  • Tariff changes: Electricity rates, taxes and slab thresholds vary by utility and can change during five years.
  • Room conditions: High ambient temperature, poor ventilation, direct sunlight and frequent door opening increase compressor runtime.
  • Loading and settings: Overloading, very cold temperature settings and placing hot food inside can raise consumption.
  • Product differences: Two refrigerators with the same capacity and star rating can have different printed AEC values.
  • Type mismatch: A frost-free refrigerator and a direct-cool refrigerator do not share the same test conditions.
  • Label-period changes: Regulatory bands are time-bound. Do not apply a 2023–2024 band to an unlabeled or later-period retail claim.

How to verify a refrigerator before buying

  1. Photograph or read the physical BEE label, including star rating, AEC, capacity, label validity period and model number.
  2. Search the exact model in BEE’s comparison or mobile database, filtering by star rating, volume and energy consumption. BEE says the database is updated daily.
  3. Confirm that the retailer’s listing uses the same model number as the label and database entry.
  4. Recalculate using your own tariff rather than the seller’s estimated monthly cost.

Verification matters because a BEE consumer notice dated 11 June 2025 reported that Whirlpool model DC P 205 5S failed the BEE 3-star rating. The notice is a reminder to check the exact model record instead of relying on a retailer title or a product photograph.

Is a 5-star refrigerator worth the extra price?

It can be, particularly when the 5-star model’s AEC is much lower and the refrigerator will be used for many years. The decision is financial only after you compare the documented purchase-price premium with the calculated annual saving. If the premium is ₹4,000 and the annual electricity saving is ₹800, the simple payback is five years; if the saving is ₹300, payback is more than 13 years. Those examples are arithmetic illustrations, not market prices.

Also consider features that affect value independently of the star label, such as capacity, warranty, noise, temperature performance and service availability. A higher star rating cannot compensate for buying the wrong size or type for your household.

Bottom line for a 3-star versus 5-star comparison

Use the exact AEC printed on two comparable refrigerators and multiply the difference by your local tariff and five years. The 5-star model will generally use less tested energy, but there is no universal rupee saving. The published 280-litre government example demonstrates ₹738 a year between 2-star and 5-star models, while the 3-star-versus-5-star result must be calculated from the specific models you are considering.
