Organizations have three main ways to deliver Windows: configure new PCs with Windows Autopilot, upgrade eligible existing PCs in place, or deploy a clean image for a new, wiped, or replacement device. The right choice depends on device state, whether apps and settings must be preserved, and the deployment infrastructure your IT team can support.

How to choose a Windows deployment approach

Microsoft recommends modern deployment methods unless a specific need calls for another procedure. Its deployment scenarios include Autopilot and in-place upgrade as modern approaches, while bare-metal, refresh, and replace are traditional deployment scenarios. Dynamic provisioning—such as Microsoft Entra ID and mobile device management configuration, provisioning packages, and Subscription Activation—is another category. These are scenarios, not mutually exclusive products: an organization can use different approaches for different devices or stages of a device’s lifecycle. Microsoft’s Windows deployment scenarios describe the distinctions.

Approach Best fit What happens to the device Operational consideration
Windows Autopilot New organizational devices The device uses its OEM-installed Windows image and is configured during out-of-box setup. Reduces the need to maintain custom images and model-specific drivers; requires supported versions and prerequisites.
In-place upgrade Eligible existing devices where continuity matters Windows Setup updates the operating system while preserving data, settings, apps, and drivers. Generally needs less IT effort than a complex deployment infrastructure, but does not suit every device or upgrade path.
Traditional image deployment Clean installs, wiped devices, and PC replacement A fresh image is installed; refresh and replace workflows can save and restore user state. Requires image-deployment tooling and operational planning.

1. Use Windows Autopilot for new devices

Autopilot configures a new Windows device through the out-of-box experience (OOBE), starting with the Windows image installed by the device manufacturer. During setup, the device can receive organizational settings and policies, install apps, and, where applicable, change Windows edition. The user typically connects to a network and verifies their credentials; IT can automate much of the remaining setup. Microsoft’s Autopilot overview explains the provisioning model.

Because Autopilot uses the OEM-installed image, it can reduce the need to build and maintain a separate custom image and driver set for every PC model. Supported management options include Intune, Windows Update client policies, and Configuration Manager. Before choosing it, check Microsoft’s current technical, network, configuration, Windows-version, and licensing prerequisites; support depends on the particular deployment configuration.

2. Upgrade eligible existing PCs in place

For a supported PC that should retain its current working environment, an in-place upgrade uses Windows Setup to update the operating system while preserving user data, settings, applications, and drivers. Microsoft identifies this as its recommended organizational path for existing computers moving from unsupported Windows versions and says it generally requires less IT effort than setting up complex deployment infrastructure. Configuration Manager can help organizations control the rollout. Microsoft’s Configuration Manager upgrade guidance covers this managed scenario.

Windows can automatically roll back an upgrade if deployment issues occur. That capability is not a substitute for checking compatibility and planning recovery: an in-place upgrade is not appropriate for every device or transition. Microsoft gives moving from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows and upgrading a boot-from-VHD installation as examples that require a different approach. Confirm eligibility and the supported upgrade path before scheduling deployment.

3. Deploy a traditional image for clean installs and lifecycle changes

Choose traditional image deployment when a device needs a fresh installation, must be wiped, or is being replaced. Microsoft describes three relevant scenarios:

Bare-metal deployment

Install a fresh Windows image on a new or wiped device. This is the clean-install route when preserving the existing Windows installation is not the goal.

Refresh (wipe and load)

Save the user’s state, wipe the disk, install the image, and restore that state. This provides a clean operating-system deployment while retaining the transferred user state.

Replace

Save user state from the old PC, deploy Windows to a new PC, and restore the state there. This is the traditional image-deployment scenario for a device replacement.

What if you mean installing Windows 11 on a personal PC?

Consumer installation is different from deploying Windows across an organization. For an eligible personal device, Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11. If you want to proceed another way, the Windows 11 Installation Assistant is an upgrade option, and Windows installation media can either upgrade an existing installation or install a fresh copy. Check the device’s system requirements before beginning. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page provides the current consumer options and requirements.

Booting a PC from installation media starts a fresh installation and erases the existing installation and files, so back up anything you need first. A USB flash drive is one example of installation media; it is optional and is not needed for Autopilot or an in-place upgrade.
