James Murphy’s 2020 DZone article identifies three challenges beginners may face when learning Python: setting up a work environment, deciding what to write, and debugging. It is an opinion piece, not an evidence-based ranking, so these are best read as useful learning hurdles—not definitively the three hardest Python challenges for everyone.

1. Getting a Python work environment set up

A beginner can understand a lesson and still get stuck before writing a line of code: Python must be installed or made available, and the learner needs a way to create and run a program. Murphy’s article recommends using an integrated development environment (IDE), but its setup advice is broad and dates to an article updated December 20, 2020. Exact steps depend on your operating system and chosen Python distribution, so use the current official installation guidance for your platform rather than treating that older suggestion as a complete setup procedure.

Make setup a small, verifiable task

  • Choose a Python distribution and editor or IDE, then follow their current installation instructions.
  • Run a minimal program, such as one that prints a short message, to confirm that the environment can execute code.
  • If it fails, identify which stage failed—installation, editor configuration, or running the program—and address that stage before adding more tools.

An IDE can bring code editing and execution into one workspace, but it does not decide what a program should do. Treat setup as a prerequisite to practice, not as the programming itself.

2. Deciding what to write

Turning an idea into code means specifying the behavior precisely enough for a computer to follow. “Make a list easier to use,” for example, is a goal; a program needs concrete steps such as receiving values, sorting them, and displaying the result. Beginners often find this translation harder than typing Python syntax.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Translate the goal into steps before coding

  1. Describe the desired result in one sentence.
  2. Write down the input the program needs and the output it should produce.
  3. Break the work into small actions, in order.
  4. Implement one action at a time and check whether it produces the expected result.

Editor autocomplete can suggest names or complete code as you type, which may reduce typing friction. It cannot determine the right logic for your task, and accepting a suggestion does not guarantee that the program is correct. Use suggestions as an editing aid, not as a substitute for planning.

3. Debugging the code

Errors are part of writing and learning code. A message from Python can point toward a syntax problem or a failure that occurs while the program runs; either way, debugging is the work of narrowing down what went wrong. Finding the message does not make every error easy to fix, but approaching it methodically gives you useful information instead of a reason to guess.

A deliberate debugging routine

  1. Read the full error message and note the line or operation it identifies.
  2. Inspect that code and the values it uses; check for a typo, a missing piece of syntax, or an assumption that may not hold.
  3. Make one small change, then run the program again.
  4. Compare the new result with what you expected. If the problem remains, use the new message or behavior to choose the next check.

Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to see which change affected the result. Keep a small example that reproduces the problem when possible; it can make the behavior easier to inspect than a larger program.

Why these three challenges are a useful starting point

Murphy’s article groups beginner hurdles into setup, deciding what to build, and debugging. A Chinese republication renders its middle challenge as learning important functions, but the DZone original’s wording is “Deciding and Knowing What To Write,” so that is the framing used here. Neither page establishes that these challenges are objectively the hardest or most common for all Python learners. Their practical value is that they cover three different parts of the experience: preparing tools, planning behavior, and learning from mistakes.
