Three Buick engine groups deserve extra scrutiny in the used-car market: the 2008–2011 3.6L V6, the 2011–2012 2.4L four-cylinder, and the 2011–2013 turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. These are cautions drawn from owner reports and complaint summaries—not proven failure-rate rankings, and not evidence that every engine in those groups is defective.

What “steer clear” means for these Buick engines

The warnings are best used as a checklist when assessing a specific car, not as a blanket rule against buying every Buick with one of these engines. The evidence is uneven: General Motors documented particular timing-chain conditions in certain 3.6L and 2.4L applications, while the reported 2.0L turbo concerns in the cited coverage are based on owner complaints and have not been verified here with model-specific primary documentation.

Complaint totals are not failure rates. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it uses owner complaints alongside other data to identify possible safety issues and assess whether a safety-related trend exists. A complaint can flag a reason to investigate; by itself, it does not establish how often an engine fails or whether a particular car has a defect.

2008–2011 3.6L V6: check for timing-chain history

Owner reports cited in the August 23, 2026 SlashGear article describe timing-chain failures among concerns for this engine group, particularly in early Enclave examples. GM documentation supports a narrower, specific concern: Special Coverage bulletin 11340C, issued in November 2012, covered certain 2009 Buick Enclave vehicles equipped with a 2.8L or 3.6L V6. GM said that, under certain driving conditions and with the original oil-change intervals, premature timing-chain wear could illuminate the Service Engine Soon light.

The bulletin’s special coverage was 10 years or 120,000 miles from the vehicle’s original in-service date, whichever came first. That historical coverage period has elapsed; the bulletin is evidence of a documented condition in specified vehicles, not an available warranty today or proof that every Buick 3.6L V6 is affected.

A later GM service bulletin, 12-06-01-009F, lists timing-chain kit applications for specified high-feature V6 engines, including certain Buick LaCrosse and Enclave applications. It identifies diagnostic trouble codes P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018, and P0019 in connection with the service information. The correct application depends on the vehicle’s model year and engine RPO, so do not assume a kit fits based on displacement alone.

2011–2012 2.4L four-cylinder: distinguish the chain issue from oil-use reports

The SlashGear article summarizes timing-chain complaints involving the Regal and oil-consumption reports involving the Verano. Those are complaint-based summaries, not measured prevalence or a finding that every 2.4L Buick has either problem.

GM’s July 2013 customer letter, reproduced in bulletin 12313C, documents a balance-chain condition in some 2010–2011 LaCrosse and 2011 Regal vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine. GM said chrome on the balance-chain pins could wear, allowing the chain to stretch, create noise, and potentially cause engine damage if left untreated. The letter also discussed a fuel-pump plunger-shaft seal condition.

The letter described special coverage of 10 years or 120,000 miles for the named condition. That was a historical coverage period, not a current coverage promise. Its named applications do not establish that every Buick 2.4L—or the Verano oil-consumption reports—shares the documented balance-chain condition.

2011–2013 2.0L turbo four-cylinder: treat reports as a warning to inspect

The cited article reports owner complaints about timing chains and low-speed stalling or shuddering in some Regal examples. The available material does not establish these claims through a matching GM bulletin, quantify affected vehicles, or identify a relevant coverage program. Treat them as reasons to ask questions and inspect an individual car, not as a verified defect affecting all 2.0L turbo Regals.

How to evaluate a Buick with one of these engines

  1. Identify the exact application. Match the model year and engine to the VIN and engine RPO. The GM documents apply to specified vehicles and engine codes, not simply to every Buick with the same displacement.
  2. Review repair and maintenance records. Look for documented timing- or balance-chain diagnosis and repairs, as well as routine service records. A receipt should identify the work performed and the vehicle it applies to.
  3. Pay attention to symptoms during inspection. Warning lights, unusual chain-area noise, rough running, stalling, shuddering, or reported oil use are reasons to investigate further. Their presence does not by itself confirm a specific defect.
  4. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a mechanic familiar with GM vehicles to assess the particular car and review available diagnostic information. An inspection can inform a buying decision, but it cannot guarantee future reliability.
  5. Verify parts by VIN before any repair. GM’s timing-chain kit information is application-specific. Confirm fitment using the vehicle’s VIN and engine RPO rather than relying on a broad engine-family label.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

GM’s documents substantiate particular chain-wear conditions for specified Enclave, LaCrosse, and Regal applications. They do not prove the broader model-year ranges in the complaint-based warnings are uniformly affected. The 2.0L turbo concerns and the Verano oil-consumption reports remain secondary-source summaries in the cited material, and no engine-specific failure probability is established for any of the three groups.
