PPSSPP can turn an Android phone or tablet into a capable PSP, but the emulator does not include games. You need your own PSP dumps in a supported format, such as .ISO, .CSO, or—on PPSSPP 1.17 and newer—.CHD. Legally distributed homebrew is another option.
The 25 games below are strong starting points because they cover the PSP’s best action, RPG, racing, strategy, fighting, and puzzle releases. “Best” is an editorial selection rather than an official PPSSPP ranking, and the right settings can vary by game and Android hardware.
25 best PPSSPP games for Android
Use this list as a shortlist rather than a compatibility guarantee. A newer, non-budget Android device is more likely to run the full PSP library smoothly, while demanding 3D games may need lower rendering resolution or a different graphics backend.

How to install PPSSPP and add games on Android
- Install PPSSPP – PSP emulator from Google Play, or use one of the official Android options: PPSSPP Gold, the official APK, Huawei’s store, or F-Droid. The free edition does not include games.
- Obtain a legally made dump of a PSP game or legally distributed homebrew. PPSSPP commonly uses
.ISOand.CSOfiles;.CHDis supported from version 1.17. - Open PPSSPP and choose Settings → System → Show Memory Stick Folder… to see or select the folder it uses for PSP data.
- On Android 10 or older, PPSSPP normally uses a
PSPfolder in shared storage. On Android 11 and newer, create or select a folder when PPSSPP asks for storage access. - Place disc-image files in a convenient folder, such as
PSP ISOorGames/PSP, then browse to that folder from PPSSPP’s Games screen. Do not assume that every ISO belongs in/PSP/GAME. - Use the PSP directory structure for downloadable content, homebrew, and related files:
PSP/GAMEfor game content or DLC, andPSP/SAVEDATAfor save data or DLC saves. - Return to the Games tab, open the folder containing the image, and tap the game to launch it. PPSSPP does not require a PSP BIOS file.
Android settings worth trying
| Problem or goal | What to try |
|---|---|
| Low frame rate | Try a lower rendering resolution, disable costly enhancements, and test another graphics backend. |
| OpenGL performs poorly | Try Vulkan if the device supports it. Vulkan is not universally fastest; GPU drivers and individual games matter. |
| Visual quality | Increase rendering resolution gradually. Texture scaling and frameskip should be adjusted per game rather than copied as a universal profile. |
| MSAA missing | This is expected on unsupported devices. PPSSPP requires Vulkan and a driver supporting VK_KHR_depth_stencil_resolve. |
| Controls feel awkward | Rearrange the on-screen controls or pair a Bluetooth controller. Rhythm and fighting games can benefit most from physical inputs. |
Common PPSSPP problems on Android
Games or saves disappeared after an Android upgrade
Android 11 and newer use scoped storage. Reopen Settings → System → Show Memory Stick Folder… and select the folder containing your PSP directory. A file manager may still show the files even when PPSSPP has not been granted access to that location.
An SD card stopped loading games
PPSSPP’s FAQ records reports of SD-card loading problems after Android 13 upgrades, with newer Android versions sometimes producing unusual permission failures. Re-select the storage folder, test the same game from internal storage, and check that the image itself is readable.
A CSO or CHD will not open
A failed load is not automatically a compatibility issue. Check that the file was dumped correctly and is not corrupt. PPSSPP 1.19.1 added protection against attempting to load files identified as obviously corrupt.
A PBP game stopped working after an update
Some PBP files had problems around the PPSSPP 1.19 release, followed by fixes in 1.19.1. Update through the store or install the newer official APK over the existing APK if that is how PPSSPP was installed.

Gran Turismo’s screen appears to shake
This effect is intentional: the game uses it to simulate PSP-screen blur and temporal anti-aliasing. Disable it in Options → Display Settings → Video Output → External Video Output.
Tactics Ogre texture packs do not load
On case-sensitive systems, rename the texture-pack folders exactly to lowercase ui and profile.
Updating PPSSPP
Google Play and Huawei Store installations can update automatically. An APK installation must be updated manually by downloading the newer official APK and installing it over the existing PPSSPP installation. The official download page and Google Play listing may not show identical release information at the same time, and Play Store releases can roll out gradually over several days.

Does PPSSPP come with PSP games?
No. The free Android edition contains no games. Use your own legally created PSP dumps or legally distributed homebrew.
Where should I put PSP ISO files on Android?
They can be stored in a folder you choose and opened by browsing to that folder in PPSSPP. PSP/GAME is the PSP directory used for downloadable content, homebrew, and related files; it is not a universal requirement for every ISO.
Does PPSSPP need a BIOS?
No. PPSSPP emulates the relevant PSP system software and does not require a dumped PSP BIOS.
Can PPSSPP run PS2, PS3, PS Vita, or PS1 games?
No. PPSSPP is a PSP emulator. It does not run PS1 EBOOTs, PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Vita, or non-PSP games such as GTA V.
Is Vulkan always the best PPSSPP renderer?
No. Vulkan may improve performance where available, but the result depends on the Android device, GPU driver, and game. OpenGL can be better on some hardware, so test both when necessary.
Why are my games missing on Android 11 or newer?
PPSSPP may not have permission to the folder after Android’s scoped-storage rules take effect. Select it again through Settings → System → Show Memory Stick Folder….
The Bottom Line
Start with God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Persona 3 Portable, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Burnout Legends, or Lumines depending on your preferred genre. Keep game files in an accessible folder, select that folder in PPSSPP on newer Android versions, and change graphics settings per game instead of relying on a single “best” preset.
