Useful PC desk accessories solve a specific annoyance: a crowded work surface, tangled cables, awkward screen placement, or peripherals you dislike using. PCWorld senior editor Alaina Yee’s August 27, 2026 roundup drew on more than 1,000 comments in a Reddit r/buildapc discussion, then added her commentary. It is a collection of enthusiast suggestions—not a test proving that all 23 items improve comfort or productivity. Pick the accessory that addresses your setup’s actual problem; you do not need the entire list.
Start with the problem you want to solve
Before buying anything, identify the friction point. Is the desk too crowded? Are cables dangling? Do you switch between computers? Is the monitor difficult to position, or is an input device uncomfortable? The best choice depends on the constraint, the desk and the equipment already in use.
- Surface crowding: consider a monitor arm, a larger or deeper tabletop, a side table, or a floor stand if the monitor is particularly heavy.
- Cable clutter: look at an under-desk tray, reusable ties, or wireless peripherals.
- Shared equipment: choose a USB hub to add ports or a KVM switch to share a display and peripherals between computers.
- Uncomfortable positioning or input: evaluate a chair, keyboard, mouse, tray, footrest, or desk-height change that fits your body and workspace.
- Desk instability: check whether the desktop, legs, or a clamped accessory mount is the weak point.
Small conveniences that can earn their space
Desk pad
A desk pad creates a continuous mouse surface and helps protect the desktop. It is a straightforward option when the desk finish is vulnerable or the mouse surface is inconsistent.

A heated coaster is for someone who wants a drink to stay warm at the desk. Treat it as a convenience rather than a productivity upgrade.

Reusable mounting tape
Reusable tape can secure lightweight accessories without adding another clamp or stand. Check the desk’s finish and the accessory’s weight before sticking anything in place.
External speakers
Speakers offer an alternative when wearing headphones is uncomfortable or inconvenient. They also change where sound goes, so consider whether an open-speaker setup suits the room.
Replacement chair casters
New casters may make a chair roll more smoothly or help protect the floor. Match the caster stem and chair base, and choose a wheel appropriate to the flooring.
Recommended Free Tools
Enthusiast upgrades for controls, networking and audio
Macropad
A macropad adds dedicated buttons or controls for shortcuts and recurring tasks. A Stream Deck is one example named in the roundup; it is most useful when you have actions worth assigning to separate keys.
Router with management features
A router such as the Ubiquiti AmpliFi Alien was suggested for greater visibility and management of a home network. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the network issue you are trying to solve; it is not a desk accessory in the narrow sense, but it can improve the home PC setup around the desk.

A desk microphone can suit calls, recording, or streaming when the built-in microphone is inadequate for your needs. Check available desk space, connection requirements, and whether the mic’s mounting arrangement will fit.
Make the desk and its supports fit the equipment
Reinforcement plate for a clamp mount
A reinforcement plate spreads pressure beneath a clamp-mounted monitor arm or microphone arm. It may help when the desktop seems too fragile for a concentrated clamp load, but confirm the clamp and plate dimensions and the desk material.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Larger or deeper tabletop
A more generous surface can provide room to position a monitor farther back or accommodate equipment that currently competes for space. Measure the room and desk base before replacing a top; a new surface must fit the legs and remain adequately supported.
Sturdier workbench-style legs
For a heavy or wobbly DIY desk, stronger legs may address the instability. The PCWorld example cites about one inch of tabletop thickness as a typical minimum for the frame discussed, not a universal rule. Follow the chosen frame’s requirements and check that the top is compatible.
Reduce clutter and reclaim usable space
Choose monitor support by the physical constraint
A monitor arm, riser, stand, and floor stand solve related but different problems. An arm can free desk surface and provide reach adjustment; a riser can work when there is no suitable rear edge for a clamp; a floor stand can be an option for a particularly heavy display. Compare the available rear clearance, desktop thickness and edge shape, monitor weight, mounting pattern, adjustment range, and space reclaimed before choosing.

PCWorld’s examples included an AmazonBasics Lift monitor arm and a floor stand. Dell’s US office-accessory guide also emphasizes checking physical fit and connection requirements when selecting desk equipment.
Use a hub for ports; use a KVM to switch computers
A USB hub expands the ports available from a computer. A KVM switch is for sharing a monitor and peripherals across computers and switching control between them. They are not interchangeable: decide how many computers and displays you need to connect, what peripherals must be shared, and what resolution and refresh requirements apply.
Also verify the host connection. A USB-C plug alone does not guarantee particular video output, data speed, or power delivery; Dell notes that those capabilities vary by device. A roundup example was an Anker 8-in-1 USB-C docking station, but confirm that any hub or dock supports your computer and intended display setup.
Hooks and stands for frequently used devices
A headphone hook, phone stand, or controller stand gives items a designated place and can clear the main work area. Consider where each item will be reachable without interfering with the mouse, chair, or monitor.
Under-desk cable tray and reusable ties
A tray gathers cables beneath the desktop, while reusable ties help bundle and route them. Dell advises leaving enough slack for a height-adjustable desk’s full travel, keeping connectors accessible, and routing cables away from moving parts and ventilation openings. Choose a mounting method—clamp, screw, or adhesive—that suits the desk material and your willingness to modify it.

- Note: Fits desk edges 0.6 - 1.8 in thick (15 - 45 mm), about the thickness of one to three decks of cards stacked together. Not compatible with curved edges, edges sloped over 45°, or desks without an edge for clamping.
Wireless keyboard, mouse or headset
Wireless peripherals can reduce cables across the desktop. Consider battery charging or replacement, connection method, and whether a wireless model meets the responsiveness and compatibility needs of your setup.
Side table or rolling drawer unit
A small neighboring surface or rolling drawer can move items off the main desk without making them hard to reach. Measure its footprint and route any connected cables so the unit can move safely.

Chair
A better-fitting chair may be a more meaningful change than another gadget. The roundup also pointed to refurbished premium chairs as an option. Fit varies, so assess adjustability and how the chair works with your desk rather than assuming a particular model suits everyone.
Keyboard, mouse or gaming keypad
Different keyboard and mouse shapes can change how input feels. A gaming keypad, such as the Razer Tartarus named in the roundup, may suit someone who wants a compact set of controls for gaming or assigned shortcuts. Try to identify the specific discomfort or workflow issue before changing devices.
Keyboard tray
A tray can change keyboard height or bring the keyboard closer, depending on its mounting and adjustment range. Check leg clearance, desk construction, and whether the tray can hold your keyboard and mouse in the positions you need.

Monitor light bar or backlighting
A monitor light bar provides task lighting from the display area; a backlighting strip adds ambient light behind the screen. The roundup characterized the bar as a more premium approach and backlighting as a lower-cost one, but its prices are time-sensitive. Choose by lighting purpose, mounting space, and whether you want light on the work surface or behind the monitor.
Footrest
A footrest is an option if your feet do not rest comfortably while seated. Dell includes footrests among possible ergonomic accessories, but no single arrangement is right for every body or desk.
Sit/stand desk or riser, with a standing mat
A sit/stand desk or riser changes working height; a standing mat is an optional companion for standing use. Check height range, desk stability, available room, and cable slack through the full adjustment range. Consider these as setup choices, not medical guarantees.

Check compatibility before buying
- For clamp-on gear: measure desktop thickness, edge shape, and clearance beneath the desk; confirm the clamp’s permitted dimensions and the desktop’s strength.
- For monitors: verify the mounting pattern and display weight against the arm or stand limits, and make sure the desk has enough clearance for the chosen mount.
- For USB-C hubs and docks: confirm the computer supports the video, data, and power functions you need. Dell’s guide warns that USB-C does not provide identical capabilities on every device.
- For cable management: preserve connector access, ventilation, and slack for any moving desk parts.
- For ergonomic accessories: check adjustability and fit with your chair, desk, and preferred working position; individual comfort differs.
What the 23-item roundup can—and cannot—tell you
PCWorld’s Alaina Yee said she read most of the more than 1,000 comments on the Reddit discussion and came away satisfied with the ideas. That makes the list a curated set of enthusiast recommendations, not a controlled comparison or evidence that each item produces a measured benefit. Named examples—including Creative Pebble speakers, Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer, Realth mounting tape, upgraded caster wheels, Elgato Stream Deck v2, Ubiquiti AmpliFi Alien, Elgato Wave 3, HUANUO reinforcement plates, a Roosevelt workbench frame, IKEA Signum cable tray, Logitech G502 Lightspeed, Staples Hyken, Govee monitor backlighting, and FlexiSpot sit/stand desk—illustrate the categories rather than establish current availability, best-in-class status, or current prices.
Dell’s current US office-accessory guide is useful for the practical checks around fit, cabling, connectivity, and ergonomic options; it does not make any one accessory universally suitable.
