To play 2160p (4K UHD) on a TV, the content, service plan, app or player, TV input, HDMI cable, and every device between the player and TV must support the required format. The connection also needs enough bandwidth, and some TVs require an enhanced HDMI setting. If a 4K TV shows 1080p instead, check those links in order before buying anything.
What 2160p means—and what it does not
2160p is commonly called 4K UHD. Google describes 4K Ultra HD as offering resolution up to four times greater than HD and 1080p in its 4K streaming guidance. Resolution is separate from HDR: 4K describes image detail, while HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are high dynamic range formats. A TV can display 4K without supporting every HDR format, and HDR requires compatible content and equipment throughout the signal path.
A TV marked 4K does not guarantee that every app, title, HDMI input, or connected device will deliver 2160p. Netflix says it plays the highest quality available for the connected device, port and cable; a title that is available in 4K may still display in HD if the current device supports only HD. See Netflix’s playback quality guidance.

Check the source and the specific title
Start with the program you want to watch. Confirm that the title is offered in 4K in your region, that your subscription and app support that quality, and that the device you are using can play it. Netflix says most, but not all, titles are available in HD or 4K; its title details page reports the quality available on the device in use.

The source may be the TV’s built-in app, an external streaming player, or a UHD Blu-ray player. Device capabilities vary: Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and Chromecast Ultra as 4K-capable examples, and says Chromecast with Google TV (HD) does not support 4K playback. Check the current device and service documentation for your exact model rather than assuming that any player—or any app installed on a 4K TV—supports 2160p.
Verify the TV input and HDMI signal path
Look up the TV’s exact model and HDMI port in its manual. Some sets support the necessary 4K, HDR, or HDCP features on only certain inputs. For an external player, the chosen port must support the resolution and format you want. Some TVs also require you to enable an enhanced input mode, which may be labeled “UHD,” “Enhanced,” “Deep Color,” or something else depending on the manufacturer and firmware.
HDCP is copy-protection support used in some 4K playback chains. For the Roku setup covered in its support guidance, HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support may be required across the connected chain; Roku notes that some early 4K TVs lack HDCP 2.2 or provide it on only one input. See Roku’s HDCP guidance. Follow the requirements for your particular player and service: a “4K” label on the TV alone does not establish that every input or connected component meets them.

Every intermediate device matters. An AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or splitter can limit resolution or HDR if its input, output, settings, or connected cables do not support the format. Temporarily connect the player directly to a compatible TV input. If that restores 4K or HDR, investigate the bypassed equipment and the cables on both sides. Roku explains that an older receiver without HDCP 2.2 may be bypassed for video while audio is returned over ARC or S/PDIF, if the equipment supports that arrangement.
Choose a suitable HDMI cable
Use a cable that meets the requirements of the source, format, and equipment. Netflix specifies Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables in its Premium plan’s 4K/HDR guidance; Google calls for a high-speed HDMI cable; Roku specifies Premium High Speed for applicable external-player setups. Apple says 4K video, especially HDR formats, needs a cable compatible with those formats, and its Apple TV 4K includes a Check HDMI Connection test. Apple published that guidance on November 14, 2025: Apple TV 4K video and audio setup.
If the existing cable is not rated for the setup or a direct connection works when it is replaced, a compatible Premium High Speed HDMI cable may be appropriate. A new cable cannot give 4K capability to an unsupported TV input, player, receiver, switch, or splitter. Check those components before spending money, and do not assume that a particular cable length or an “8K” label is necessary for every system.

Check internet speed and playback quality settings
Streaming services publish their own bandwidth recommendations. Google recommends at least 20 Mbps for its cited 4K setup, while Roku says up to 25 Mbps may be needed. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees that a service will deliver 4K at that speed in every home. Actual available speed and stability matter; test near the playback device if possible. Netflix directs viewers to its current service-specific speed recommendations and notes that higher playback quality uses more data.

If a forced quality setting causes buffering or freezing on a variable connection, Netflix says Auto may be preferable. Keep the app and player software or firmware current, and check the player’s output resolution setting. The bandwidth figures and settings are provider-specific, so consult the current guidance for the service you use.
Enable HDR only when the full setup supports it
First confirm that the title, player, TV, selected input, cable, and any intermediary equipment all support the same HDR format. A TV may require HDR or enhanced HDMI to be enabled for a particular port. Then check the player’s video output settings.

Frame rate can also affect HDR selection. Apple says automatic HDR-format selection at 60 Hz requires the TV to display the relevant format at that rate; a lower-rate output may require Match Dynamic Range. The correct setting depends on the TV and player. Apple’s guidance is available at Apple TV 4K video and audio setup.

- Check the player’s output settings. Confirm that its display resolution is set appropriately, and update the app and device software or firmware.
- Use the documented TV input. Move the player to the input specified for 4K, HDCP 2.2, or HDR in the TV manual, then enable that input’s enhanced or UHD mode if required.
- Bypass intermediary equipment. Connect the player directly to the TV. If 4K returns, check the receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter settings and specifications.
- Check every cable and connection. Confirm that each cable and each intermediary input and output supports the format required for your setup. A cable label alone does not prove that the entire chain is compatible.
- Check the network and service quality setting. Test the connection at the playback device and review the service’s current recommendations and data or playback settings.
- For missing HDR, check HDR separately. Confirm that the input, TV, player output, content, format, and frame rate are compatible; 4K resolution by itself does not establish HDR support.
Roku says a player that does not detect HDCP 2.2 may select 720p or 1080p instead of 4K/HDR. Its HDCP troubleshooting guide advises checking the TV’s input labels and manual and temporarily removing an AV receiver to isolate the chain. The guide reports an update on June 23, 2026.

Choose the playback route that fits your setup
A built-in TV app avoids an external HDMI player connection, while an external streamer can provide a source when the TV’s app or device does not meet your needs. A UHD Blu-ray player is a route for disc playback. None is universally best: check the specific service or disc, resolution and frame-rate support, HDR formats, HDMI and HDCP compatibility across the chain, internet reliability for streaming, and whether an ongoing service plan or physical media suits you.
