For a new driver shopping for a new car in the United States, the 2026 IIHS and Consumer Reports recommended-vehicle list is a strong place to start. It names eligible cars and SUVs with strong safety credentials, but it is a shortlist—not a ranking. The right choice depends on the driver’s needs, budget, and the exact model year and build.

What the 2026 recommended-car list includes

Updated May 27, 2026, the joint Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports (CR) guide lists vehicles that meet its selection criteria: an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award, a CR Safety Verdict of Best, good IIHS seat-belt reminder ratings, and a starting price below $45,000. That price is an eligibility ceiling for starting prices, not a promise that every trim or transaction costs less than $45,000. The guide does not rank these vehicles against one another or identify a single safest choice. See the current IIHS and CR list.

Vehicle class Models on the 2026 list
Small cars Mazda 3 hatchback or sedan; Toyota Prius
Midsize cars Hyundai Sonata, including hybrid; Toyota Camry
Small SUVs Hyundai Ioniq 5; Hyundai Kona; Hyundai Tucson, including hybrid; Mazda CX-30; Mazda CX-50, including hybrid
Midsize SUVs Ford Explorer; Honda Passport; Hyundai Palisade built after November 2025, including hybrid; Hyundai Santa Fe, including hybrid; Kia Sorento built after September 2025, including hybrid; Mazda CX-70; Mazda CX-70 PHEV; Mazda CX-90; Nissan Murano; Nissan Pathfinder; Subaru Ascent; Volkswagen Atlas; Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

Use the list to find candidates in a class that fits the driver’s passenger, cargo, and budget needs. Then compare the safety evidence for each specific vehicle. An award for a model name does not necessarily cover every model year, trim, or build date.

How to compare safety ratings

Safety ratings answer different questions. IIHS evaluates both crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, which covers technology that may prevent a crash or reduce its severity. Check both, and verify that the rating applies to the exact model year and build you are considering. IIHS’s guide summarizes its advice plainly: “A safe vehicle will have good crashworthiness ratings.” Read IIHS guidance for young drivers.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings are a separate source of information. Its ratings page identifies model-year 2026 vehicles selected for crash testing, but not every vehicle has a rating. An unavailable result does not mean a vehicle received zero stars; check which vehicles NHTSA has actually tested and compare available results with IIHS findings. Check NHTSA car safety ratings.

What new drivers should look for beyond an award

IIHS advises that a young driver’s vehicle should not be too small, too old, or too powerful. Its recommendations include a curb weight of at least 2,750 pounds, electronic stability control, and strong crashworthiness ratings. It also advises looking for four- or five-star NHTSA ratings alongside good IIHS performance. These are screening recommendations, not a substitute for checking ratings and equipment on the exact vehicle.

Buying used? Check the exact vehicle and its history

For a used car, ratings can depend on model year and build date because safety changes may be introduced partway through a model year. IIHS specifically highlights a good driver-side small-overlap front rating as a criterion to look for. Verify that the result applies to the vehicle you are considering, not just a later or differently built version.

Before buying, check the vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate for open recalls. IIHS says NHTSA advises checking its recall database for new recalls about every six months. Why teen-driver advice can matter to other new drivers

IIHS’s guidance is principally written for teen drivers. It reports that teens are about three times as likely as drivers age 20 and older to die in a crash, attributing the elevated risk to immaturity and inexperience. That statistic describes teens; it should not be treated as a risk estimate for every adult novice driver, nor as a 2026 crash-rate measurement. The guide’s practical vehicle-selection advice—such as considering crash protection, stability control, and vehicle size—can still help adult first-time drivers.

NHTSA says novice teen drivers rarely crash while supervised and have their highest crash rates during the first six months of unsupervised driving. It also reports that all 50 states and the District of Columbia have a three-stage graduated driver licensing system that limits high-risk driving situations. Families can combine a suitable vehicle with supervised practice and compliance with the applicable licensing rules. Read NHTSA’s teen safe-driving guidance.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Pick a class that suits the driver. Start with the list’s compact or midsize cars, small SUVs, and midsize SUVs, then narrow by passenger and cargo needs.
  2. Verify the exact vehicle. Check model year, trim, body style, build-date qualifications, and which safety features are fitted.
  3. Review both kinds of safety evidence. Compare IIHS crashworthiness and crash-avoidance results, then check NHTSA results where available.
  4. For a used car, check its record. Confirm the applicable ratings and search for open recalls using its VIN or license plate.

The May 27, 2026 IIHS and CR release describes the list as intended specifically for teens while noting its suggestions can suit drivers of any age seeking affordability alongside crash protection and crash avoidance. Read the IIHS announcement.
