The 2026 Mac mini comes in two distinct tiers: the M6 starts at $899 in the U.S. and is suited to everyday and many creative workloads, while the M5 Pro starts at $1,699 and adds higher memory and storage limits, more powerful chip configurations, and Thunderbolt 5. Choose based on the work you run and the capacity and ports you need—not on the word “Pro” alone.
Apple announced both models on August 25, 2026, and availability began September 22. The prices and specifications below reflect Apple’s published U.S. information; configuration prices and availability vary by region.
What changed with the 2026 Mac mini?
The 2026 lineup pairs the M6 with the M5 Pro instead of offering one configuration for every kind of desktop user. The M6 provides a lower-cost entry point, while M5 Pro raises the ceilings for memory, storage, graphics, and connectivity. Apple positions the M6 for a broad mix of everyday, creative, and on-device AI work, and M5 Pro for more demanding creative and technical workflows.

M6 vs. M5 Pro: configurations and key differences
Apple’s published configurations show where the price gap goes: M5 Pro begins with more memory and storage and can be configured well beyond the M6’s limits. Neither model’s starting price represents every configuration.

Apple lists two front USB-C ports with USB 3 support, a headphone jack with high-impedance headphone support, HDMI, and Ethernet on both models. Both include 2.5Gb Ethernet, with 10Gb Ethernet available as an option. For a specific monitor combination, consult Apple’s technical specifications, because supported resolutions and refresh rates depend on the chip, port, and number of connected displays.

Which Mac mini should you buy?
Choose M6 for a lower entry price and moderate capacity needs
M6 is the more sensible starting point if your expected workload fits within 32GB of unified memory and 2TB of internal SSD storage, and Thunderbolt 4 meets your connection needs. It is the lower-priced option for general desktop use and many creative tasks. Its 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU are fixed in Apple’s listed M6 configuration.

Choose M5 Pro when you need its higher ceilings
M5 Pro is the better fit if you can use more than 32GB of unified memory, need internal SSD capacity above 2TB, want the configurable 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, or specifically need Thunderbolt 5. Its starting configuration also includes more memory and storage than M6. Those capabilities come with a substantially higher U.S. starting price, so they are worth paying for when they address a real workload or expansion requirement.

Check the complete configuration, not just the chip name
Before ordering, match the configured memory and SSD to the applications and files you expect to keep on the machine, check whether 10Gb Ethernet is needed, and confirm your display arrangement against Apple’s specifications. The starting-price comparison is not a like-for-like price for every memory and storage tier; Apple’s configuration options and final prices depend on what you select.
What do Apple’s performance claims mean?
Apple’s published comparisons offer examples of intended gains, not independent test results. In its 2026 announcement, Apple says M6 delivers up to 4x faster AI performance than Mac mini with M4 and 40 percent faster CPU performance. Apple also claims up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio for M6 versus Mac mini with M1, and up to 4.8x versus M4. These are Apple-reported comparisons in the named workloads and against the stated models; they should not be treated as a prediction for every application.
