Laya, Kev, Cloudflare Clef, Clef-omni, and several hosted decision APIs are the leading Jev alternatives in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you need self-hosting, multilingual or multimodal input, exact /v1/systemone compatibility, or simply a low-cost typed decision endpoint. No independent evidence establishes one universal winner, so test candidates on your own workload before switching.

What Jev is and why alternatives matter

Jev is TypeSafe AI’s hosted System One typed-decision model, released on 15 September 2026. It accepts application state and typed questions, then returns a bounded choice, an ordered score, or a yes/no probability instead of free-form text. The name refers to the System 1/System 2 distinction associated with Daniel Kahneman.

That narrow output can reduce parsing work and latency when an application needs a decision rather than an explanation. It also creates practical requirements: predictable schemas, calibrated probabilities, abstention behavior, context limits, and an API that fits existing requests. The alternatives below differ substantially on those operational details.

Which alternatives are closest to Jev’s API?

If migration effort is the priority, start with models that explicitly use the /v1/systemone shape. Upstage Solar Decide and Nace.AI Drex are identified as using it directly. Perplexity pplx-decider instead uses /v1/decisions, while Inception Mercury Decide uses an Inception decisions endpoint and Respan Span-01 uses a separate scores endpoint. Those differences affect client code, authentication, error handling and observability.

Cloudflare Clef exposes Jev-like fields but is tied to Workers AI deployment choices. Microsoft-Decision-1 is available through Microsoft Foundry and OpenRouter, although the cited source does not publish its request format. For every other provider, treat compatibility as an integration task rather than assuming that a similar model name means wire compatibility.

A practical compatibility check

  1. Record a representative set of current Jev requests, including each question type, long context, malformed input and an out-of-set case.
  2. Map the candidate’s endpoint, authentication, request fields and response schema before changing production traffic.
  3. Verify whether probabilities are calibrated, whether ordered scores have a defined scale, and how the service signals abstention or invalid options.
  4. Run both systems on the same frozen test set and compare agreement, latency, cost, calibration and failure behavior.
  5. Use shadow traffic first, then route a small percentage of live requests with rollback ready.

How to choose by deployment requirement

Privacy and on-premises inference

Laya is the clearest fit when open weights, multilingual operation, private inference or self-hosting are the primary constraints. Kev adds Apache-2.0 licensing, multiple Qwen-based sizes, Jev-compatible serving and fine-tuning guidance. SemIf/OpenJev is useful when you want to keep the interface stable while swapping open backbones. Bespoke Nimble is aimed at teams that want to own the training recipe, while CLM-8B targets low latency but leaves calibration validation to the operator.

Managed infrastructure

Hosted options remove model serving and capacity management. Solar Decide, Liquid AI d1, meraGPT Decider 1, Celeris-1 Decision and Nace.AI Drex cover all three Jev-style question types, although their endpoints and context limits differ. Strom is an EU-hosted beta with text, JSON and image support. OpenAI Decisions API is listed as a commercial alternative, but its current model and beta status need confirmation before a production commitment.

Multimodal inputs

Choose Clef-omni when audio and video are part of the decision context. Celeris-1 Decision supports image input, and Strom accepts text, JSON and images. A text-only model may still be preferable if you can preprocess media into structured features, because that can simplify privacy controls, cost accounting and reproducibility.

Choice, Score and Noul coverage

Jev-style systems expose three distinct readouts:

  • Choice: select one option from a bounded set.
  • Score: rank or score alternatives in an ordered output.
  • Noul: return a yes/no probability.

Together AI Tev1 is limited to Choice. Respan Span-01 is a scoring model for agent traces rather than a general three-mode replacement. The comparison identifies pplx-decider, Solar Decide, Liquid AI d1, Decider 1, Mercury Decide, Hanzo AI Kai, Celeris-1 Decision and Drex as supporting all three modes, with their own endpoint details. Confirm the exact scale, probability semantics and option constraints in the provider documentation before treating outputs as interchangeable.

What the available evidence says about accuracy

A 2026 benchmark by Tobias Deußer, Lorenz Sparrenberg and Rafet Sifa evaluated Jev across 37 datasets. It reported 95–99% accuracy on IMDB, SST-2, HellaSwag and ARC, and 86.7% on Belebele across 122 languages. Jev reportedly beat Qwen on 27 of the 37 datasets. The same results found degradation for all models on low-resource languages, fine-grained labels and rubric judgments.

An independent 2026 audit by Lijuan Tang and Yuemeng Zheng reached a more cautious conclusion: “The typed readout itself has not shown an independent accuracy advantage over comparable label-probability readouts.” That audit describes the literature as an early evidence map and identifies Jev’s clearest gains as latency and cost, not a proven universal accuracy lead.

These findings do not establish a ranking among the 20 alternatives. A model that wins a public benchmark can still be poorly calibrated on your labels, overconfident on unfamiliar inputs or too slow for your service-level objective.

A test plan that prevents a bad switch

  • Build a production-like corpus: include common cases, ambiguous examples, noisy labels, low-resource languages and out-of-set requests.
  • Measure more than accuracy: track agreement, calibration error, abstention or selective-prediction behavior, tail latency, throughput and token usage.
  • Check modality separately: evaluate text, JSON, images, audio or video only where the candidate claims support.
  • Validate license and tuning rights: especially for open weights, redistribution, fine-tuning and commercial deployment.
  • Price the whole operation: include inference hosting, storage, observability, media processing and engineering work, not just token rates.

For fixed labels and a reliable labeled set, a fine-tuned classifier may be simpler and cheaper than any general decision model. If the same request must reason and then generate an explanation or action plan, a structured-output language model can be a better fit than a decision-only endpoint.

Recommendations by priority

  • Open weights, privacy or multilingual self-hosting: Laya.
  • Jev-compatible serving with model-size options: Kev.
  • Workers AI or audio/video: Clef or Clef-omni.
  • Lowest migration effort: a provider explicitly supporting /v1/systemone, such as Solar Decide or Drex.
  • A swappable open backend behind a Jev-like interface: SemIf/OpenJev.
  • Fixed labels and training data: evaluate a fine-tuned classifier before adopting a general decision model.
