Windows software is easiest to find from the developer that makes it, but a good download catalog can save time when you need several tools, an older release, a portable build, or a package-manager command. The important distinction is that a site can be useful without being the original publisher.
This list covers 20 active Windows download sites and separates official sources, curated catalogs, project hosts, and package managers. “Free download” describes the download process—not necessarily the software license. Check the product’s edition, publisher, version, release date, architecture, and installer signature before running it.

1. Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store is the first place to check for a Store-distributed application. In Windows 11, open Start → Microsoft Store, choose Apps or Gaming, select Show all, choose the app, and click Get.

It is convenient for discovery, installation, and Store-packaged updates. However, not every Store listing is a Microsoft-built MSIX package. Microsoft also documents MSI/EXE submissions hosted on a publisher’s CDN. For those apps, updates are the app publisher’s responsibility, and Store-managed updates are unavailable. Check the publisher and update mechanism rather than assuming the Store handles everything.

2. Ninite
Ninite is one of the most practical choices for setting up a Windows PC. Select checkboxes under groups such as Web Browsers, Messaging, Media, Runtimes, Imaging, and Documents, then download the generated installer.
The current catalog includes Krita, Blender, Paint.NET, GIMP, IrfanView, XnView, Inkscape, Greenshot, ShareX, Foxit Reader, LibreOffice, SumatraPDF, and OpenOffice. It also exposes specific runtime options such as Amazon Corretto JDK x64 versions 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25. Pick the exact architecture or major version when shown; selecting a generic name does not always identify either one.
3. MajorGeeks
MajorGeeks focuses on Windows utilities and presents individual entries with version numbers. Its current homepage includes examples such as Chatbox AI 1.22.2, Steam Game Idler 6.2.2, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner 4.8.5, and Decentraleyes 3.0.2.

It is useful for finding specialist tools, but “free” does not mean risk-free. Some listed programs modify system configuration, browser behavior, or software state. The homepage also does not establish that every installer is hosted by the original developer or is the newest upstream release. Read the program description and use a restore point before running system-changing utilities.
4. FileHippo
FileHippo offers a familiar catalog of popular applications, including Avast One Free Antivirus, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, VLC Media Player 64-bit, AVG AntiVirus FREE, Google Chrome, CCleaner Free, WinRAR 64-bit, and AnyDesk.
It also retains older software. Current listings include the 2007 Microsoft Office Save as PDF or XPS add-in and the Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1 Update. That makes FileHippo potentially useful when compatibility requires an older release, but it disproves the idea that every listing is the latest version. On each product page, compare the version and release date with the developer’s site.
5. FileHorse
FileHorse organizes downloads into categories including Anti-Virus, Security Tools, System Tuning, Backup and Recovery, and Audio Software. Examples currently shown include Avast Free Antivirus 26.6, Proton Authenticator 1.1.6, AdGuard Ad Blocker 7.22.9, UniGetUI 2026 2.7, CCleaner Free 7.10.1464, and Adobe Audition CC 2026 Build 26.0.

6. FilePuma
FilePuma is particularly useful when CPU architecture matters. Its categories include Security & Firewalls, Browsers & Plugins, Communications, Developer Tools, and Internet & Network.
The site separately lists Google Chrome 64-bit and 32-bit, Mozilla Firefox 32-bit and 64-bit, Python 64-bit 3.14.7, Java Runtime Environment 8 Update 501 in both architectures, and Java Development Kit 64-bit 8 Update 501. Do not treat those entries as interchangeable: a 32-bit build may be required for an old dependency, while a 64-bit build is generally the relevant choice for a modern 64-bit Windows installation.

7. Softonic
Softonic is a multi-platform catalog covering Windows and other operating systems. It can be useful for discovering software, but the available evidence does not establish that every listing is safe, malware-free, or free of bundled installers.

Before opening a downloaded file, verify the publisher identity, installer name, version, and digital signature. If the download flow offers an unexpected wrapper or a different program from the one requested, cancel it and locate the developer’s official download instead.
8. Software Informer
Software Informer provides a comparatively limited software catalog and is aimed at helping users find Windows programs. Descriptions of the service mention file scanning, but there is no verified universal scanning methodology or guarantee that every download is malware-free.
Use it as a discovery tool rather than a substitute for checking the publisher, release date, signature, and security result for the specific file.
9. Softpedia
Softpedia supports operating-system-specific browsing and distinguishes between normal, freeware, and shareware views. That is helpful when you need to separate genuinely free utilities from trials or commercial downloads.
Those labels describe licensing categories, not necessarily the currency or authenticity of every package. Search for the program, choose the Windows version, and compare its listed version with the upstream developer’s release information.
10. SourceForge
SourceForge hosts project pages rather than functioning only as a conventional software catalog. Pages expose metadata such as downloads, last update, reviews, and a See Project action. The homepage currently shows entries with weekly counts and update timing, such as “40 This Week” and “Last Update: 3 days ago.”
It is a strong place to find open-source projects, but the project maintainer controls the uploaded releases and metadata. SourceForge’s former third-party-software policy was discontinued in 2016, yet that does not prove that every individual project file is official or safe. Follow the project’s release notes and verify checksums where the maintainer provides them.
11. BytesIn
BytesIn is a Windows software catalog organized by categories. It can help with browsing and software discovery, particularly when you do not yet know which application you need.

12. CNET Download
CNET Download is a large catalog for Windows software and games. Its size makes it convenient for searching, but a CNET listing alone does not prove that the file is the developer’s newest build or that the installer is hosted by the original publisher.
Check four details separately: publisher identity, version number, release date, and installer filename. If those details do not match the developer’s official page, do not proceed simply because the listing is familiar.
13. GetIntoPC
GetIntoPC advertises thousands of downloadable programs and has a large audience. That breadth can make it appear useful for hard-to-find applications, but the available information does not verify publisher authorization, cryptographic hashes, malware-scanning standards, or licensing status for its files.
Be especially careful with commercial software. The fact that a commercial application is downloadable from a site does not make it legally free. Verify the publisher’s license and distribution authorization before downloading or installing it.
14. SnapFiles
SnapFiles provides unusually detailed catalog fields, including version, description, Editor, Users, O/s, File Size, Price, and Popularity. It also has “More new software and updates” and a “Reloads” section for noteworthy freeware that may have been missed.
Some entries retain operating-system labels such as XP/Vista/7/8/10/11. An old compatibility label is not proof that the program has been tested on every one of those Windows versions, so confirm current Windows support before installing.
15. DownloadCrew
DownloadCrew separates Latest Downloads, Recommended Downloads, Most Popular Downloads, and Recently Viewed. Current freeware entries include Transmission 4.1.1, Microsoft PowerToys 0.100.2, and FBackup 9.9.1044.

16. DonationCoder
DonationCoder distributes software while asking users for optional donations. It is a useful place to discover independent Windows utilities, especially when you want alternatives to large commercial suites.
Do not infer the license from the donation model. Optional donations do not automatically mean that every program is free software or open source. Read the license for each individual utility.

17. Uptodown
Uptodown has a multilingual Windows section and lists software such as Microsoft Office 2021, Microsoft Office 2024, Microsoft 365, and OpenOffice Portable. The Windows page may display Spanish labels including Descarga de apps para Windows and Descarga, descubre, comparte.
Its catalog presence does not change the licensing status of a Microsoft product. Office 2021, Office 2024, and Microsoft 365 are not made free or license-free merely because a download page lists them. Confirm that you have a valid license and that the download is appropriate for your account and edition.
18. Free Download Center
Free Download Center is described as offering thousands of paid and free programs. It may be useful for broad catalog searches, but current publisher authorization, installer provenance, scanning practices, and exact download-flow details are not independently established here.
Use the same checks as with any third-party catalog: identify the publisher, confirm the license, compare the version, and inspect the downloaded file before running it.
19. FOSSHub
FOSSHub presents project metadata such as Version, Released on, Platform, Downloads, and Category. Current visible Windows entries include RogueKiller 16.0.1.0, RosarioSIS 12.1.2, mp3DirectCut 2.38, and PicView.
It is convenient for open-source and freeware projects, but the homepage visibly retains releases dated January and February 2025. Also, its catalog metadata is not a universal malware-free certification. Check the project’s own release page and verify hashes or signatures when available.

For Windows installation media and Microsoft’s own downloads, use microsoft.com/software-download. The page has separate links for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7. Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 now lead to Microsoft Learn rather than following the same current download flow as Windows 11 and Windows 10.
For a normal browser download, choose Save to put the file in Downloads, or Save as to select another location. This is the preferred source for Windows installation tools instead of a third-party catalog.
Safer ways to download Windows software
- Prefer the publisher. Start with the developer’s official website or Microsoft Store listing. Use a catalog when it provides a clear advantage, such as an older version or a multi-app installer.
- Confirm the exact product. Distinguish a full installer from an update, portable build, trial, runtime, driver, or media-creation tool.
- Check the architecture. In Windows, open Settings → System → About and inspect System type. Match 32-bit and 64-bit downloads when the site provides separate choices.
- Read the license. “Free download” can describe freeware, freemium software, a time-limited trial, or a commercial product whose installer is available without payment.
- Inspect before launching. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and look at Digital Signatures when present. Reject an unexpected publisher, filename, or installer wrapper.
- Keep a recovery option. Create a restore point or backup before installing registry cleaners, system tuners, security tools, drivers, or utilities that modify browser settings.

winget download --id <package-id>winget download requires an exact package string; ambiguous matches ask for more filtering. Files go to the user’s Downloads folder by default. Choose another location with:

Chocolatey is another package-management option. Its installation script normally uses an elevated PowerShell session, installs to C:ProgramDataChocolatey when ChocolateyInstall is not already defined, and adds Chocolatey’s bin directory to the machine Path.
Because that process changes machine-level environment variables, review the official instructions at chocolatey.org/install and understand the script before running it. After installation, use Chocolatey’s package search and install commands rather than downloading arbitrary installers from search results.
FAQ
Which Windows software download site should I use first?
Use the software publisher’s official website or the Microsoft Store when the app is distributed there. Microsoft Software Download is the correct starting point for Windows installation media. Use third-party catalogs for discovery, older versions, or convenience, then verify the specific file.
Is every Microsoft Store app updated automatically by Microsoft?
No. Store-packaged apps may update through the Store, but Microsoft also documents MSI/EXE submissions hosted on a publisher CDN. For those, updates are the app publisher’s responsibility and Store-managed updates are unavailable.
Is Ninite safer than downloading each program separately?
Ninite is convenient for selecting and installing multiple common applications, but still review the selected app, architecture, and version. Do not assume a generic entry represents every available CPU architecture or major release.
Are software catalog sites safe?
No catalog should be treated as a universal safety guarantee. Check the publisher, version, release date, installer filename, digital signature, license, and—when available—hash before running a downloaded file.
Does free download mean the software is free to use?
No. A free download may be freeware, freemium software, a trial, an update, or a commercial product. Listings for products such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 do not remove their licensing requirements.
Can WinGet download an installer without installing it?
Yes. Use winget download --id <package-id> with the exact package ID. The default destination is the user’s Downloads folder; --download-directory selects another location.

Why can an old version appear on a page labeled Latest?
Download catalogs may retain legacy releases, updates, or old compatibility entries. FileHippo, FOSSHub, SnapFiles, and DownloadCrew visibly contain older material, so check the product page’s version and release date.
