For gaming over Wi-Fi, try 5 GHz first if your console or PC gets a strong, steady signal. It generally offers faster throughput and more channel choices. If the device is farther away or separated from the router by walls, 2.4 GHz may provide a more reliable connection. Neither band guarantees a particular ping: test where you actually play, and consider Ethernet if a cable is practical.

How 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz differ for gaming

The choice is a trade-off between reach and capacity. In general, 2.4 GHz travels farther and handles obstacles better, while 5 GHz offers faster throughput and more channel choices. These are typical characteristics, not a guarantee for every router, device, or home. ASUS notes that actual speed and latency also depend on factors such as signal strength, interference, channel width, and the connected device’s capabilities (ASUS Global Support).

Factor 2.4 GHz 5 GHz What it means for gaming
Typical reach Longer Shorter 2.4 GHz may be steadier in a distant room.
Walls and obstacles Generally penetrates obstacles better More affected by walls and obstacles Judge the signal from the console or PC’s actual location.
Throughput Generally slower Generally faster 5 GHz has more capacity, but high raw throughput is not the same as low ping.
Channel choice and congestion Fewer non-overlapping channels; common household devices also use this band More channel choices and generally less congestion 5 GHz may be preferable in a crowded area if its signal is strong.
Compatibility More widely supported Requires a device and router that support 5 GHz Check both ends of the connection before switching.

Microsoft’s guidance describes 5 GHz as generally providing faster throughput and being better suited to activities such as gaming, while its advice also recognizes the reach advantage of 2.4 GHz (Microsoft Support: Wi-Fi and your home layout). That throughput comparison does not establish that 5 GHz always lowers online-game ping.

Which band should you try in your setup?

Near the router with a strong signal

Try 5 GHz first. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the gaming device to the 5 GHz network and check whether play is stable. When both bands share one network name, Windows may choose an available band automatically, according to Microsoft.

Far from the router or behind several walls

Test both bands from the room where you play. If 5 GHz is weak or drops out, 2.4 GHz may be more dependable because it typically reaches farther and passes through obstacles more effectively. Use the connection that stays stable in practice rather than choosing by its label.

In an apartment or a home with many nearby networks

5 GHz generally has more channel choices and may be less congested, provided the signal reaches the device well. If you are using 2.4 GHz, Microsoft lists channels 1, 6, and 11 as non-overlapping choices and recommends considering nearby access points when choosing a channel.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

When lag coincides with downloads or streams

Pause or limit large background transfers and test again. Google notes that simultaneous high-bandwidth activity can slow a connection (Google Home and Nest Help). Switching bands may not help if the main issue is competing household traffic.

Why the Wi-Fi band cannot promise lower ping

Ping is the time it takes for data to travel between your device and a game server and back. The Wi-Fi band affects only part of that path. Signal quality, interference, router and device capabilities, household traffic, your internet service, and the route to the game server can all matter. A faster throughput result is not proof of lower or more consistent game latency.

There is no established universal number of milliseconds saved by switching from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz. Measure the connection under the conditions that matter to you: from the gaming location, at a typical time, and with the household’s usual network activity. Compare stability and in-game experience as well as a single ping reading.

When Ethernet is worth trying

A direct Ethernet connection removes the Wi-Fi radio hop and can avoid wireless congestion and variability. It is a practical option when a cable can reach the router, but it cannot fix every source of end-to-end latency, such as congestion elsewhere in the home network or the route to the game server.

Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for internet service above 100 Mbps; that is cable guidance, not a claim that the cable alone will reduce online-game ping. If your gaming device has no Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter may work, subject to the device’s compatibility.

What to check before changing your router

  • Test the current connection at the place where you play, including both bands if available.
  • Move the router or gaming device closer, or reduce obstacles between them, and see whether stability improves.
  • Check which band and channel the device is using. On 2.4 GHz, consider the nearby access points and the channel guidance above.
  • Pause large downloads or other high-bandwidth activity to see whether household traffic is contributing to lag.
  • Try Ethernet if feasible before buying new networking equipment.

A new router is not automatically a ping fix. RTINGS reports that, after testing 11 routers across its described range of models, it found a router had close to no control over total network latency affecting gaming (RTINGS.com). That is a conclusion from RTINGS’ test scope, not a guarantee about every home. Consider replacing equipment when you have identified a specific problem—such as inadequate coverage, missing 5 GHz support, or a router struggling with household traffic—rather than expecting a “gaming” label alone to improve ping.
