A 2.2 GB AVI can exceed the input limit of a browser-based video compressor, but the exact cause depends on the tool. The ffmpeg.wasm project, for example, documents a 2 GB maximum input size—a plausible explanation if the compressor uses that implementation, not proof of what happened in your case. AVI’s contents, the tool’s codec support, and its own upload or processing limits can also matter.
How a 2.2 GB file can exceed a browser compressor’s limit
Some compressors run video-processing code in your browser rather than sending the work to a desktop application. The ffmpeg.wasm project is a WebAssembly and JavaScript port of FFmpeg designed for browser-based audio and video workflows. Its FAQ states a hard maximum input file size of 2 GB: ffmpeg.wasm FAQ.
If your compressor uses ffmpeg.wasm under a setup with that documented limit, a 2.2 GB input is large enough to explain the failure. That figure applies to the project’s documented implementation, not to all browsers or every online compressor. The title alone does not identify the tool, browser, operating system, or error, so it cannot establish the cause.

AVI names a container format. It does not tell you which video or audio codecs the file contains, what streams are inside, or whether a particular compressor can handle them. FFmpeg’s format documentation describes format handling through demuxers and muxers, each with its own supported formats and options: FFmpeg formats documentation.

That distinction helps separate two kinds of problem: the file may be too large for the tool’s input path, or the tool may not support the file’s contents. The extension alone does not prove that AVI is unsupported or that it caused the failure.
Check which limit or compatibility issue you hit
- Identify the compressor. Check its help page or documentation for a maximum input size and whether it runs locally in the browser or uploads the file to a service. If it identifies ffmpeg.wasm or documents a 2 GB limit, the 2.2 GB size is a strong candidate explanation.
- Note when it fails and the exact error. Does the file fail to import, or does processing stop later? Record the full error text. An upload rejection points to a different part of the workflow than an error while decoding or encoding, though the exact message and tool documentation are needed to interpret it.
- Check the browser and operating system. Record their versions and compare them with the compressor’s requirements. For the relevant ffmpeg.wasm build or use case, its documentation notes that SharedArrayBuffer is a browser requirement: ffmpeg.wasm project documentation.
- Check the AVI’s streams and codecs. Use the compressor’s supported-format information, if available, or inspect the file with a media tool that can identify its streams. A format label by itself is not enough to confirm compatibility.
- Try a smaller copy only as a diagnostic. If a shorter or smaller sample with the same codecs works, that is evidence that size may be involved; it does not prove a particular hard limit. If it fails in the same way, codec support or another tool-specific issue remains possible.
Without the compressor name and exact error, other possibilities remain open, including a service-side upload cap, memory constraints, unsupported codecs, damaged AVI metadata, device resources, or browser-specific support. These are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis of this particular failure.

Would WebCodecs solve it?
Not by itself. WebCodecs provides low-level video and audio encoding and decoding, including in dedicated workers, but it does not independently extract media from a file or package encoded output into a playable container. An application needs other components for demuxing and muxing, and codec availability varies across browsers and devices. See MDN’s WebCodecs API guide.

Use desktop FFmpeg if the browser tool cannot handle the file

ffmpeg -i input.avi output.mp4Replace the filenames with your actual input and desired output paths. This converts the container and encodes the output using FFmpeg’s defaults; it does not guarantee a smaller file, a particular quality level, or a lossless result. The final size and quality depend on the source and encoding settings. If reducing size is the goal, choose settings for your acceptable quality and target size rather than assuming that changing AVI to MP4 will compress the video.
