1Cover Comprehensive is an Australian travel-insurance plan with broad listed benefits, including unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses. Whether it fits a trip depends on details the headline limits do not show: the cancellation amount you select, section sub-limits, excesses, exclusions, eligibility, and any optional cover recorded on your certificate.
What this review covers
This assessment is based on 1Cover Australia’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) effective 4 March 2026. The certificate’s issue date determines which PDS version applies, so check the version attached to your own policy. The plan is arranged by 1Cover Pty Ltd as an authorised representative of Coffre-Fort Pty Ltd; Coffre-Fort acts as underwriting agent under binding authority. The insurer named in the PDS is HDI Global Specialty SE, acting through its Australian branch. Read the PDS and check the policy details.
The figures below describe published benefit limits, not guaranteed claim payments. Terms, exclusions, excesses, sub-limits, eligibility rules, and certificate-specific variations determine what may be payable. The insurer describes its comparison figures as a summary and directs customers to the PDS and Target Market Determination for full terms. See 1Cover’s plan comparison.
What Comprehensive lists as covered
The PDS benefit table and 1Cover’s comparison summary list these benefits for Comprehensive. Limits generally apply per journey, subject to the relevant section’s conditions and sub-limits; personal liability is different, as its stated limit is the total payable for all claims under the policy.
#1 Best Overall
| Benefit | Published limit or description |
|---|---|
| Emergency assistance | 24/7 assistance |
| Overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses | Unlimited |
| Dental expenses | Up to $2,000 |
| Hospital cash allowance | Up to $10,000 |
| Repatriation of remains | Up to $25,000; a separate €30,000 amount is stated for death in a Schengen member state |
| Cancellation fees and lost deposits | Limit selected by the customer |
| Additional accommodation and travel expenses | Up to $50,000, with applicable limits shared with accompanying dependants as specified in the PDS |
| Travel delay expenses | Up to $2,000 |
| Personal liability | Up to $5,000,000 per policy in total for all claims |
| Luggage and personal effects | Up to $15,000 in the plan comparison summary |
These are caps or summary figures, not promises of reimbursement. The PDS sets section and item limits and other conditions, and the benefit table says some benefits are not available for domestic travel in Australia. Consult the wording for the specific benefit and circumstances you need covered.
Who may be eligible—and what can limit eligibility
Comprehensive is intended for eligible Australian residents whose journey has not started. The policy must be purchased before leaving the departure point, and the dates and destinations on the itinerary must match the Certificate of Insurance. Eligibility also depends on residence, trip start and end conditions, age-plan rules, and health-cover requirements. Australian citizens and permanent residents need a valid Australian Medicare card; separate visa and health-cover criteria apply to temporary residents.
Rank #2
The plan is available to travellers of all ages, but a traveller aged 80 or over is limited to a maximum journey of 90 days. Destination coverage is tied to the countries or regions declared on the certificate. For a cruise, declare every country the ship visits. 1Cover’s comparison page says cover is unavailable for travel to countries subject to an Australian Government “do not travel” warning; recheck current official warnings and the policy wording when arranging cover.

Choose cancellation cover against your prepaid costs
The cancellation limit is selected by the customer rather than being a single fixed amount for every policy. Work out the non-refundable trip costs you want to insure and check the PDS for which cancellation events qualify. A selected limit does not make every cancellation payable.
Rank #3
Check excesses and add-ons against your itinerary
Your certificate records the excess, add-ons, and any variations to standard terms. The PDS states that a double excess can apply to some claims arising directly from winter sports. Cruise, winter-sport, bicycle, or rental-vehicle needs should prompt a check of the relevant definitions and optional-pack terms; do not assume an activity or rental-car excess is included by default. Confirm any required pack appears on the certificate.
Review medical conditions, activities, and exclusions
Check the policy’s pre-existing medical condition assessment and acceptance terms, plus the exclusions and definitions that apply to planned activities. Eligibility or a listed benefit alone does not establish that a particular condition or event is covered.

Confirm destinations, dates, and trip duration
Compare the full itinerary with the certificate, including cruise ports and declared regions. Check age and journey-duration restrictions and current travel warnings before purchase.
Understand evidence and claim procedures
Keep the documents and evidence required by the relevant PDS section, and note notification and approval requirements. If hospitalised, or if outpatient treatment is expected to exceed $1,000, the PDS says to contact emergency assistance as soon as practicable and obtain prior approval for expenses. Evacuation or repatriation also requires prior approval from the assistance service. These steps matter when arranging treatment or transport, so read the applicable wording before departure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the customer rating does—and does not—show
When accessed in 2026, 1Cover’s comparison page displayed a rating of 4.2 from 5,118 reviews and linked to Product Review. The count and rating can change. They are social proof, not independently audited evidence of claim acceptance rates, settlement times, or typical claim outcomes.
The same page presented a testimonial attributed to Maryna M, September 2025, describing her use of 1Cover over eight years and travel across 48 countries on five continents. That is an individual testimonial published by the insurer, not independent verification of a typical customer experience. The available rating and testimonial do not establish claims performance.
Overall assessment
On the published benefit summary, Comprehensive has broad scope, with unlimited overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses and configurable cancellation cover among its notable features. The main practical question is whether the policy’s conditions match your trip: review the cancellation events and amount, baggage item limits, medical and evacuation conditions, excess, age and destination rules, exclusions, and any add-ons required for your plans. The PDS puts the responsibility plainly: “You should read the PDS before buying the policy because you are responsible for ensuring that the insurance cover you select is suitable for your needs.”
