Zach Yadegari, the 19-year-old co-founder of AI assistant startup Persona, reportedly raised $10 million after 15 of 18 universities rejected his applications. The funding, reported in October 2026, follows his earlier work on calorie-estimating app Cal AI and a reported acquisition of that company by MyFitnessPal.
What is Persona, and what does the reported $10 million round mean?
Persona is described in reporting as an AI assistant startup founded by Yadegari. Moneycontrol’s October 2026 account, attributing the funding details to TechCrunch, says Persona raised $10 million in a round led by Vine Ventures, with Cory Levy and Collective Global participating. The reports reviewed do not include a company or investor announcement, so the amount and participants are best treated as reported rather than independently confirmed.
The round is an early financing milestone, not evidence by itself that Persona’s planned device is available or that the business has established long-term demand. Coverage describes a beta delivered through iMessage and a separate wearable that was still planned for a future launch.
What happened with the university applications?
Moneycontrol reported that Yadegari received rejections from 15 of 18 university applications in 2025 and later enrolled at the University of Miami. India Today’s account named Harvard, Yale and Stanford among the institutions that rejected him. The figure describes reported admissions results; it does not establish that rejection caused his startup success.

How did Cal AI fit into his path?
Yadegari co-founded Cal AI in 2024. The app estimates calories from photographs of meals. Moneycontrol and India Today attribute to TechCrunch reports that it surpassed 15 million downloads and generated more than $30 million in annual revenue within two years. Those reports do not specify the accounting period or revenue definition, and no audited financial statements were reviewed, so the figures should be understood as reported metrics.
MyFitnessPal acquired Cal AI in March 2026 for an undisclosed amount, according to the reports. Moneycontrol says Yadegari left MyFitnessPal in June 2026 and began working on Persona. The acquisition price was not reported.

What is known about Persona’s beta and planned wearable?
iMessage beta
India Today, citing TechCrunch, reported that Persona’s beta ran through iMessage and had a few thousand users. That gives a sense of the early product’s distribution, but reporting does not establish its full capabilities, supported markets, or how it compares with other assistants.
Wearable plans
Moneycontrol described a Persona wearable planned for December 2026 at a reported price of $179. Its activation was described as a button press or wrist movement rather than always-on listening. Because the reported launch date is still in the future as of October 2026, these are plans—not confirmation that the device has shipped, is orderable, or will launch on that schedule. The reporting does not establish battery life, phone requirements, final specifications, or confirmed availability.
What has been reported about privacy and monetization?
India Today attributes to Yadegari the position that Persona would not sell conversations to advertisers, while also reporting that sponsored shopping recommendations were part of the intended business model. These are reported statements, not verified policy terms. Anyone considering a beta or future device should consult Persona’s actual privacy policy and product settings for details such as data retention, access, and sharing before using it for sensitive conversations.

The reported sequence is notable: university rejections, a consumer app that was later acquired, and a new AI startup that reportedly raised $10 million. It is a founder’s trajectory, not proof that university rejection is a reliable route to entrepreneurship or that Persona will succeed. The available coverage provides a useful account of milestones, but not primary company or investor statements, audited Cal AI financials, or a confirmed Persona product launch.
