Many cordless-tool brands use 18V as a nominal battery class because it can anchor a platform of tools that share compatible batteries and chargers. Some manufacturers label the same nominal class “20V MAX”: DEWALT says its 20V MAX battery measures 20 volts at maximum initial voltage without a workload, while its nominal voltage is 18 volts. The label alone does not establish that batteries fit other brands’ tools or reveal how a tool performs.
Why 18V appears across so many tool lines
An 18V battery class lets a manufacturer build a family of cordless tools around a shared battery platform. When a battery and charger are compatible with multiple tools in that system, an owner may be able to buy a bare tool rather than another battery-and-charger kit.
That platform benefit is specific to the system, not a universal feature of every 18V product. Bosch says its Professional 18V batteries and chargers work with tools in that system, which it describes as covering applications such as drilling, screwing, cutting and grinding. BLACK+DECKER says its POWERCONNECT platform spans power tools, lawn and garden equipment, and home-cleaning products. Those are each manufacturer’s descriptions of its own platform.
There is no established single industry-wide origin story explaining why every brand chose 18V. The practical explanation is that manufacturers can offer a range of tools around a common nominal voltage class, while each brand sets its own platform design and compatibility rules.

Why some brands say 20V MAX and others say 18V
Lithium-ion battery voltage varies with charge state. A manufacturer may label a battery by its maximum initial voltage, measured without a workload, or by its nominal voltage. DEWALT defines its 20V MAX battery as 20 volts maximum initial voltage and 18 volts nominal voltage. That explains how “20V MAX” and “18V” can describe the same nominal class without being different voltage categories in the way the labels might suggest. DEWALT’s 20V MAX explanation
This naming convention does not make 18V and 20V MAX batteries interchangeable. Voltage is only one electrical characteristic. Pack shape, connector, electronics, charger requirements and tool specifications all affect compatibility.

Does 18V mean a tool is more powerful?
No. The voltage label alone does not tell you a tool’s torque, cutting speed, runtime or suitability for a task. Compare the exact tool models and their specifications, along with the battery capacity, pack size, weight and heat management.

Manufacturer performance claims need the same care. For example, Bosch says its 18V tools can deliver up to 2,000 W when paired with an EXPERT battery. That is a Bosch claim for that combination, not a general output rating for 18V tools or a neutral comparison across brands. Bosch Professional 18V System
Will an 18V battery fit any 18V tool?
No. “18V” identifies a voltage class, not a universal battery connector or standard. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact tool, battery and charger models before buying. Compatibility may be limited to a particular brand, product generation or supported alliance.

Bosch, for example, describes compatibility within its Professional 18V System and separately describes AMPShare compatibility for tools from participating professional brands. Can an old battery work with a newer tool?
Sometimes, but age and voltage labels are not enough to determine fit. Look up the exact models in the manufacturer’s current compatibility documentation, and check replacement-pack availability and service support before investing further in a legacy system.

DEWALT’s 18V-to-20V MAX adapter
DEWALT says its adapter works with most DEWALT 18V tools, but it has exceptions. The company identifies FLEXVOLT batteries, several larger 20V MAX XR packs and specified legacy tool models as excluded. It also warns that an 18V charger must not be used to charge a 20V MAX battery through the adapter. Treat the adapter as a model-specific option, not a universal conversion. - Compatibility: Confirm which exact tools, batteries and chargers work together, and whether the claim applies only to a brand, generation or alliance.
