To improve PC gaming performance, first identify whether the problem is low frame rate, stutter, input delay, or heat. Then check the game’s requirements, available memory, background activity, drivers, graphics settings, and display configuration before considering new hardware. Results depend on the specific PC, game, settings, and display; there is no reliable one-size-fits-all FPS boost.
Start by identifying what feels wrong
Low FPS, choppy motion, and delayed controls can have different causes. Change one setting at a time and test in the same game and scene, so you can tell whether a change helped. Steam notes that detailed diagnosis varies with each user’s hardware and software configuration in its performance troubleshooting guidance.
- Low FPS: The game is producing frames slowly. Graphics settings, GPU capability, CPU performance, or system limits may be involved.
- Stutter: Motion pauses or varies unevenly. Background activity, memory pressure, or other system constraints may contribute.
- Input delay: Controls feel slow to respond. Display and game settings, frame delivery, and supported latency features can matter.
- Performance that worsens during play: Check whether heat or ventilation is limiting the system before buying cooling hardware.
17 ways to improve PC gaming performance
1. Check the game’s system requirements
Compare your PC with the game’s published requirements before changing settings or shopping for components. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee high FPS or smooth performance; the result also depends on resolution, graphics settings, and the particular game.
2. Record the symptom and test consistently
Note whether the issue is low FPS, stutter, input delay, or heat, and test changes in the same game under similar conditions. A single controlled change makes it easier to identify what actually helped.

3. Close unnecessary applications
Quit applications you do not need while gaming if they are consuming system resources. Steam recommends stopping unnecessary programs, but do not terminate unfamiliar system processes or security software just to reduce background activity.
4. Reduce unnecessary startup applications
Review programs that launch when Windows starts and disable only those you recognize and do not need running. This can reduce avoidable background activity; it is not a guaranteed FPS increase.
5. Check available memory
Look at memory use while the game is running. Steam warns that insufficient RAM can lead to disk swapping that noticeably affects FPS. Confirm that memory is actually constrained before considering a RAM upgrade.

6. Update relevant component drivers
Check the official support pages for your PC or component makers for relevant CPU, GPU, and audio driver updates. Install drivers intended for your hardware; the available evidence does not establish a current driver version that applies to every system.
7. Lower graphics settings that tax the system
Reduce demanding visual settings gradually and compare performance. Lowering resolution or detail may help when GPU rendering is the limit, but the image will be less sharp or detailed. Steam notes that if lowering resolution does not improve frame rate, CPU performance may be the constraint.
8. Check video options that increase memory demand
Higher detail, water detail, HDR, and other video options may require more memory. If the game stutters or performance degrades with demanding options enabled, lower them individually and retest rather than assuming more RAM is needed.

9. Use the display’s supported refresh rate
In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a refresh rate the display supports. Available rates depend on the monitor and resolution. FPS and refresh rate are related but different: the GPU produces frames, while the display refreshes its image. See Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions.
10. Consider variable refresh rate when supported
Variable refresh rate (VRR) can coordinate a compatible display’s refresh with frame delivery. Check that the screen, connection, and game support the feature; availability and behavior vary by setup. Some games may change whether you need to select a refresh rate manually.
11. Try Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only when applicable
For compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Optimizations for windowed games, enable the option, and restart the game. Microsoft says this setting transitions compatible presentation to flip-model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as VRR on supported screens. It is not a universal performance switch for every game or PC. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance.

12. Use in-game latency options that your system supports
If a supported game offers NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency and your hardware supports it, NVIDIA recommends trying the in-game option. Reflex is vendor-specific, not a setting available to every player. NVIDIA also cautions that advanced low-level driver tweaks are situational and can make results worse, so begin with ordinary game and operating-system settings. See its system-latency guide.
13. Check temperatures and airflow before buying cooling gear
If performance falls as a session continues, investigate whether heat is causing thermal throttling. Check temperatures with tools appropriate for your PC, ensure vents have room to breathe, and consider dust or the system’s cooling design. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance identifies overheating as a possible reason to improve heatsinking or ventilation; a new cooler is only relevant when the diagnosis points to a cooling limit.

A GPU’s capability affects both image quality and frame rate. If your system struggles at the display’s native resolution, test a lower in-game resolution or less demanding visual settings and weigh the smoother performance against reduced sharpness. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance emphasizes matching GPU choice to display resolution.

15. Match display refresh to reliably produced frames
A high-refresh display can show more frequent updates, but the experience depends on the PC producing frames reliably and on the game and display working together. Microsoft gives 144 Hz at 1080p as an example starting point for competitive play and 165 Hz at 1440p as a common balance; these are illustrative guidance published April 9, 2026, not mandatory targets or measured performance gains.
16. Check the connection between PC and display
Confirm that the display is connected through a port and cable supported by both the PC and screen for the resolution, refresh rate, and VRR features you intend to use. Available options can depend on the connection as well as the display itself.
17. Upgrade only after identifying the constraint
If the checks above do not address the problem, use the symptom and system information to decide what, if anything, needs replacing. A GPU, memory, or cooling change only makes sense when the corresponding limit is established; choose components to suit the games, resolution, refresh-rate target, and PC compatibility.

A high-refresh-rate monitor is an optional upgrade, not a first troubleshooting step. Before choosing one, compare these factors against your PC and games:
- Native resolution: Choose a resolution your GPU can handle at the visual quality you want.
- Refresh rate: Consider the frame rates your system can reliably sustain in the games you play.
- VRR: Check compatibility across the monitor, PC connection, and games.
- Connection ports: Confirm the PC and monitor have compatible ports for the desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Size and viewing distance: Select a screen that suits your desk and how far away you sit.
- Cost: Set a budget after deciding which display features your setup can use.
Microsoft’s 144 Hz at 1080p and 165 Hz at 1440p examples are not universal recommendations. Its gaming-system guidance also stresses matching refresh rate to frame output the GPU can reliably sustain.
Quick Recap
What to do if the first changes do not help
- Return to the specific symptom: low FPS, stutter, input delay, or performance that declines over time.
- Undo changes that made image quality or responsiveness worse, then test one other relevant setting.
- Compare performance after reducing graphics load. If lowering resolution does not improve frame rate, investigate CPU or other system limits rather than continuing to lower resolution.
- Check memory use and background activity during the problem, and look for signs of heat-related throttling if performance worsens during a session.
- Only consider a hardware change when the evidence points to a specific component or display limitation.
