The right 165Hz monitor depends on more than its refresh-rate label: match resolution and screen size to your graphics hardware and viewing distance, then check panel type, adaptive sync, inputs, and stand adjustments. For a compact 1080p option, PC Gamer highlights the 24-inch BenQ MOBIUZ EX240; for larger QHD screens, examples include HP’s 31.5-inch OMEN 32q and Gigabyte’s GS32QC.

165Hz monitor picks by use case

These are examples of distinct 165Hz formats, not a universal ranking or a head-to-head test. Prices and stock are not established here; check the exact regional model and current listing before buying.

Use case Monitor Documented specifications Trade-off or check
Compact 1080p BenQ MOBIUZ EX240 PC Gamer lists a 24-inch, 1920 × 1080 display with 165Hz, 1ms, and Adaptive Sync, and selects it as a budget high-refresh option. PC Gamer’s gaming monitor guide PC Gamer notes limited HDR and 1080p resolution. This is that publication’s recommendation, not a hands-on test by iTechGuides.
QHD, flat IPS HP OMEN 32q HP lists a 31.5-inch IPS panel, QHD (2560 × 1440), maximum 165Hz, DisplayPort 1.4, and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. HP OMEN 32q specifications Confirm the regional model and whether the selected input and source device support the desired resolution and refresh rate.
QHD, curved VA HP OMEN 32c HP lists a 31.5-inch curved VA panel, QHD, 165Hz, AMD FreeSync Premium, DisplayPort 1.4, and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. HP OMEN 32c specifications Its curved VA design differs from the flat IPS 32q in both panel type and viewing experience.
Large QHD value example Gigabyte GS32QC TechRadar describes a 31.5-inch, 1440p, 165Hz monitor as a budget pick. TechRadar’s GS32QC review TechRadar reports that the stand tilts but lacks height adjustment and portrait rotation.
Other 27-inch formats BenQ MOBIUZ EX2710Q; ZOWIE XL2731K BenQ’s Europe guide lists the EX2710Q as 27-inch QHD IPS at 165Hz, and the XL2731K as 27-inch FHD TN at 165Hz. BenQ’s 165Hz monitor guide These are manufacturer-listed specifications; verify the exact regional variant and availability.

How to choose a 165Hz monitor

1. Match resolution and size to your setup

1080p can be a practical fit for a compact screen or a system where you prioritize high frame rates over extra detail. QHD (also called 1440p) offers more pixels, but ask whether your graphics hardware can deliver the frame rates you want at that resolution. The documented examples span 24-inch 1080p, 27-inch QHD, 31.5-inch QHD, and 27-inch FHD formats. PC Gamer, BenQ, and HP list examples across those sizes and resolutions.

2. Choose a panel and screen shape

The examples include IPS, VA, and TN panels, as well as flat and curved screens. Compare the specific model’s image characteristics and your preference for a flat or curved display; the label “165Hz” does not tell you which panel or shape will suit your games and desk.

3. Confirm adaptive sync and platform compatibility

Dell advises buyers to consider refresh rate, response time, adaptive sync, and panel type. Its guidance recommends looking for G-Sync Compatible certification with NVIDIA graphics cards and FreeSync Premium or Premium Pro with AMD cards; for consoles, Dell identifies HDMI 2.1 VRR as relevant. Dell’s gaming-monitor guide gives that guidance. Check the exact monitor’s supported sync modes and the output capabilities of your PC or console rather than assuming compatibility from a product-family name.

4. Check ports and the complete signal path

Look at the monitor’s input specifications, then confirm that your graphics card or console can send the desired resolution and refresh rate over the input you plan to use. HP lists DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 inputs on the OMEN 32q and 32c; that does not establish that every port supports every mode or that every source can provide 165Hz at QHD. Check the manual for the exact regional model and the source device’s specifications. Do not assume you need another cable: first check what is included and whether your existing cable and connection support the intended setup.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

5. Make sure the stand and screen fit your desk

Check height adjustment, tilt, pivot, VESA mounting, and available desk space before choosing a large display. TechRadar’s GS32QC review illustrates the trade-off: its stand tilts, but does not offer height adjustment or portrait rotation. If those movements matter to you, confirm the stand’s specifications or plan for a compatible mount.

6. Read response-time and HDR claims in context

A quoted response-time figure is not a universal real-world result; compare how the manufacturer or reviewer defines and measures it. HDR support also varies in practical value: PC Gamer describes the EX240’s HDR as limited. Consider independent observations and the full feature set rather than treating a response-time number or HDR label as a guarantee of image quality.

  • Edgeless Design: Edgeless Design completely immerses you in all the captivating action and wondrous scenery that 1080P resolution and 165Hz refresh rate have to offer.
  • Multiple Digital Ports: While three HDMI ports each deliver an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, one DisplayPort produces a stunning 165Hz refresh rate, all in FHD resolution.

What a 165Hz rating does—and does not—tell you

A 165Hz refresh rate describes how often a display can refresh, but it does not guarantee that a game will run at 165 frames per second. Actual frame rate depends on the game, settings, and system hardware. Nor does the rating establish image quality, sync compatibility, response-time behavior, connectivity, or ergonomic fit. Treat it as one requirement to verify alongside the monitor’s resolution, panel, inputs, and supported modes.

For a simple starting point: choose the resolution and size first, narrow options by panel and adaptive sync, then confirm ports and stand adjustments on the exact model. The examples above show why there is no single best 165Hz format for every desk and system.
