Choose the 14-inch MacBook Pro if you carry your laptop often or usually connect it to an external monitor; choose the 16-inch if you regularly work on the built-in display and value the extra screen area more than the added weight and bulk. Size does not determine performance: the current 14-inch lineup includes M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max, while the 16-inch offers M5 Pro and M5 Max.
How much more portable is the 14-inch MacBook Pro?
Apple lists the 14-inch M5 Pro at 3.5 pounds (1.60 kg) and the 16-inch M5 Pro at 4.7 pounds (2.14 kg). That is a 1.2-pound (0.54 kg) difference, calculated from Apple’s listed weights—not a separate Apple statistic. Apple lists the 14-inch M5 at 3.4 pounds (1.55 kg), so check the exact chip configuration when comparing weights. Apple’s technical specifications list the measurements and configurations.
| Apple-listed measurement | 14-inch M5 Pro | 16-inch M5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 3.5 lb (1.60 kg) | 4.7 lb (2.14 kg) |
| Width | 12.31 in (31.26 cm) | 14.01 in (35.57 cm) |
| Depth | 8.71 in (22.12 cm) | 9.77 in (24.81 cm) |
| Thickness | 0.61 in (1.55 cm) | 0.66 in (1.68 cm) |
The smaller model takes less room in a backpack and on a cramped desk. If you buy a sleeve, check its interior dimensions against the exact MacBook model rather than relying on the screen-size label alone.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat do you gain with the 16-inch display?
The 14-inch model has a 14.2-inch diagonal display with a native resolution of 3024 × 1964 pixels; the 16-inch has a 16.2-inch display at 3456 × 2234 pixels. Both support ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, according to Apple’s specifications.

The larger panel can make working directly on the laptop more comfortable, particularly when you keep several windows visible. Its diagonal and resolution do not tell you exactly how much more usable content you will see: macOS display scaling, app layouts, and your own workflow affect the workspace. If an external monitor provides most of your large-screen space, the 14-inch may be the more practical choice.
Does the 16-inch model perform better?
Not simply because it is larger. Apple offers the 14-inch with M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max chips, and the 16-inch with M5 Pro or M5 Max. The overlapping chip families mean you can compare similarly named tiers across sizes, but that alone does not establish identical results in every workload. No independent benchmark comparison is available here.

Is battery life better on one size?
There is no clean, matched 14-inch-versus-16-inch battery result established here for current configurations. Apple’s broad MacBook Pro claim of up to 24 hours does not by itself identify a winner between these sizes. Runtime varies with configuration, workload, and settings, so compare battery claims only when the model and test conditions match.

Which size should you buy?
- Choose the 14-inch if you carry your laptop frequently, work in tight spaces, or rely on an external monitor for a large workspace. It is the smaller, lighter option and includes the base M5 tier as well as Pro and Max choices.
- Choose the 16-inch if you regularly work on the laptop’s display and want more built-in screen area enough to accept the larger footprint, extra weight, and higher announced starting prices within the shared Pro and Max tiers.
- For high-demand workloads, choose the chip and memory/storage configuration for the work first; make the size decision separately according to how often you use the built-in display.
