Gmail for Android has useful controls for sending, sorting, finding, and composing mail that are easy to miss. These 16 tips show where to find them and what each one actually does. Google does not publish this as an official set of “hidden gems,” and menu wording may vary slightly by app version.
First, know where Gmail keeps its settings
Open Gmail, tap the menu icon, then tap Settings. You may see both General settings and settings for individual accounts. General settings can affect accounts added to the app; account settings apply to the selected account. Some options may only be available on a computer. Google’s Android settings guide documents the available controls.
Send mail on your schedule
1. Undo a message immediately after sending
After you send a message, tap Undo in the on-screen banner if you spot a mistake. This is a brief, immediate opportunity—not a way to recall mail after it has been delivered. Google’s Android instructions confirm the Undo option but do not specify its duration. Google’s send and unsend instructions explain the workflow.

While composing, tap the three-dot More menu, choose Schedule send, and select a suggested time or choose your own. Gmail uses the time zone in which you schedule the message, and delivery can be a few minutes later than the selected time. See Google’s scheduling instructions.
3. Manage up to 100 scheduled messages
Google documents a maximum of 100 scheduled emails. To change one, open Scheduled, select the message, and cancel the send; Gmail returns it to Drafts, where you can edit and schedule it again. This limit and workflow are described in Google’s scheduling instructions.

Bring important mail back when you need it
4. Snooze a message
Open a message or select it in the inbox, tap More, then choose Snooze and set a date and time. Gmail removes the message from the inbox temporarily and returns it to the top at the chosen time. Google’s snooze guide covers the feature.
5. Make snoozing a swipe shortcut
In Settings, open General settings, tap Mail swipe actions, and assign Snooze to a left or right swipe. You can use the other direction for a different action. A notification when snoozed mail returns depends on Gmail notifications being enabled.

To check a message before its reminder, open the Snoozed folder from the menu, or search Gmail for in:snoozed.

Change how the inbox behaves
7. Give left and right swipes different jobs
Go to Settings → General settings → Mail swipe actions. Set each direction separately to archive, delete, mark as read or unread, move to a label, or snooze. This can make routine inbox cleanup faster without opening each message.
8. Use Priority Inbox
For the selected account, open Settings, tap the account, then Inbox type and choose Priority Inbox instead of Default Inbox. The available inbox choices may differ by account.
9. Tune inbox categories
In the selected account’s settings, open Inbox categories to control which categories appear. The categories and exact controls shown can vary with account configuration; do not assume every Gmail account has the same layout.

10. Control notifications by account
Open an account’s settings and adjust its notification options. Gmail also provides notification behavior and inbox sound or vibration controls. If you have multiple accounts in the app, review each account’s settings rather than assuming one notification choice applies everywhere.
11. Sync labels selectively
In Settings → the relevant account → Manage labels, choose a label to review its sync and notification options. This lets you tailor alerts and mail syncing for labels instead of treating every label identically.
12. Choose how much mail is available offline
Gmail lets you choose the number of days of mail to sync. Messages outside the synced span are not available offline, so select a window that fits how you use Gmail without a connection. Find the control in the account’s settings; the precise setting name can vary by app version.

Set up messages before you need them
13. Add a signature for an account
Open Settings, select the account, and tap Mobile signature to create or edit its signature. This setting belongs to that account; it is not a single signature shared automatically by every account in the app.
14. Turn on a vacation responder
In the account’s settings, tap Vacation responder, switch it on, and enter the response and dates. Review the selected account before saving so the automatic reply is enabled for the address you intend.

15. Use Smart Compose for suggestions
Smart Compose offers text suggestions as you type; it is not a tool for answering factual questions. Google lists support for English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, subject to smart features and controls being enabled. Suggestions can be wrong, so read the completed message before sending. See Google’s Smart Compose guide.

16. Format a message on your phone
While composing, select text to access formatting controls such as bold, italic, underline, text or background color, unordered lists, font selection, and clearing formatting. The toolbar may require expanding to show all options. Google lists the Android steps in its message formatting guide.
Use confidential mode with realistic expectations
Confidential mode lets you set an expiration, revoke access, limit ordinary forwarding, copying, printing, or downloading options, and optionally require an SMS passcode. It does not make a message screenshot-proof: a recipient can photograph the screen, and malicious programs may still copy or download content. Treat it as a way to restrict routine access, not as absolute security. Google explains the controls and limitations in its confidential email guide.
