Japanese IME input is not a series of finished keystrokes. While a user chooses or converts text, the value shown in a form can still be provisional, and Enter may confirm a candidate instead of submitting the form. Track the composition session, keep the text field responsive, and defer actions such as searching or submitting until the user’s intent is clear.
Why Japanese IME input needs special handling
An input method editor (IME) lets users compose text, choose candidates, and commit the result. That process can produce input updates before the user has finished. If an app treats every update as final, it may search or filter too early; if it treats every Enter press as submission, it may submit while the user is confirming a candidate.
MDN describes compositionstart as the beginning of a composition session. The corresponding compositionend event fires when composition completes or is cancelled. For input events, InputEvent.isComposing indicates whether the event occurs between those boundaries. The CompositionEvent.data value is event-specific; for compositionend, it contains the text committed to the editor.

It is a historical issue report, not a guarantee about current behavior in every React release. A 2026 practical article also describes premature auto-search and accidental Enter submission as pitfalls; verify such patterns in your own supported browser and operating-system combinations.

15 engineering checks for IME-safe forms and editors
This checklist combines the documented event model with implementation guidance. It is not a standards-defined taxonomy, measured ranking, or claim that every item reproduces in every app.
- Track the composition session. Set a composing flag on
compositionstartand clear it oncompositionend. - Treat in-progress text as provisional. The visible value can change while the user is choosing or converting text; avoid treating each intermediate value as a finished query or command.
- Defer search and filtering. Do not launch final searches or apply consequential filters for every intermediate composition update. Run the intended action when the text is committed, using the app’s desired timing policy.
- Protect Enter handling. Before mapping Enter to submit, check whether composition is active. Enter can confirm an IME candidate rather than express a request to submit.
- Use
isComposingas a signal. Inspect the relevant input or keyboard event’s composing state instead of relying only on key identity. - Verify the state at the key event. Check whether your target browsers report the expected composing state at the exact event where your handler decides whether to submit.
- Keep controlled values in sync. With controlled inputs, update the displayed value during composition so the field remains usable; do not let a side effect overwrite or disrupt the in-progress text.
- Separate value updates from side effects. Updating state to reflect what the user sees is different from sending a network request or changing a result list. Coordinate them independently.
- Run the committed action once. When composition ends, avoid duplicate requests or submissions caused by handling both intermediate updates and the final commit.
- Test cancellation as well as commitment. Composition can end after cancellation, so ensure cancellation does not accidentally trigger an action intended only for committed text.
- Exercise real Japanese IME workflows. Test candidate selection and conversion, not just direct Latin-character entry.
- Cover supported browser and OS combinations. Event sequences can differ across environments; the React issue report specifically notes this variability.
- Test every native text control you use. Include both
<input>and<textarea>in coverage where both are part of the product. - Check support before adopting custom editing APIs. MDN marks the
EditContextcompositionstart event as limited availability and experimental. Do not assume it is a broadly supported drop-in for native controls. - Add regression cases to the test matrix. Cover search or filter timing and Enter behavior during and after composition for the combinations your product supports.
Choosing when to run search and submit
For a search box or filter, keep the field’s value current while composition is active, but defer consequential work until the composition commits. If the interface uses debouncing, ensure intermediate updates do not still produce requests after the user has changed candidates; test the timing with an actual IME rather than assuming a delay solves the problem.

For Enter-to-submit forms, let the composition state inform the decision. If the user is composing, avoid treating that Enter press as an application-level submit. Once composition has ended, handle a later Enter according to the form’s normal behavior. The exact event ordering and state observed by handlers should be verified in the target matrix, not assumed identical everywhere.
What to test before release
- Starting composition, making intermediate candidate changes, and committing a candidate.
- Pressing Enter to confirm a candidate and checking that it does not prematurely submit.
- Cancelling composition and confirming that no commit-only search or submission runs.
- Checking that the visible text remains intact in controlled native inputs and textareas.
- Confirming that a committed value triggers the intended search or filter once, not repeatedly.
- Repeating the cases across supported browser and operating-system combinations, including each text control and custom editing surface the product uses.
The W3C’s 2013 Input Method Editor API specification notes in its introduction that “Even though existing Web-platform APIs allow developers to implement very complicated Web applications, developers have difficulties when implementing Web applications that involve input-method editors.” That context is a useful reminder: composition is part of text editing, not an edge case to solve with unconditional key handling.
