The closest match to a list of “16 best” web project management tools is a LinuxLinks roundup dated March 13, 2026, and it names 15—not 16. That list is a useful starting point, but it does not establish that every candidate is currently maintained, open source under its current license, free to use, or a full project manager. Here are the 15 candidates, what they are presented as doing, and what to check before choosing one. No sixteenth tool is added without evidence that it meets the same criteria.
What the 15-tool list can—and cannot—tell you
LinuxLinks’ March 13, 2026 roundup describes 15 candidates for web-based project management. Its descriptions help sort products by apparent purpose, but a roundup entry alone is not proof of a current release, a qualifying open-source license, a free hosted plan, or feature parity with a full project manager.
Use the table as a shortlist, not a verified ranking. Before adopting any candidate, check its own current documentation and source repository for license, release activity, deployment options, and the limits of any free tier. In particular, “free to download,” “open source,” and “free hosted service” are different claims.

| Tool | Stated focus | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| OpenProject | Collaborative project management, including classic, agile, and hybrid work. | Confirm which features are in Community versus Enterprise, and whether your team can operate a self-hosted installation. |
| Odoo | An open-source business-app suite that includes project management. | Check which project features and integrations are available in the edition you intend to use, and review its current licensing and hosting terms. |
| Wekan | Trello-like Kanban boards. | Confirm whether boards cover your needs for dependencies, reporting, permissions, and cross-project planning. |
| Kanboard | Kanban for small teams and individuals. | Check current maintenance, deployment requirements, and whether its workflow model is sufficient for your team. |
| Focalboard | Self-hosted project management. | Verify current maintenance and licensing, plus whether the available version supports your required collaboration and administration features. |
| Taiga | Agile project management focused on Scrum and Kanban. | Compare its current hosted and self-managed options, feature limits, and support terms. |
| Tuleap | Agile work and application lifecycle management. | Check which lifecycle and development capabilities are included in the edition you plan to deploy. |
| Leantime | Project management aimed at non-specialists. | Review the current license, free-use terms, and whether its planning and reporting features fit your process. |
| Redmine | A flexible Rails application commonly used for issue tracking and extended with plugins. | Check plugin compatibility and maintenance; extensions can affect upgrades and support. |
| eGroupWare | Web-based groupware that includes project management. | Confirm the project features, integrations, and licensing in the edition currently offered. |
| LibrePlan | Project planning, monitoring, and control. | Verify recent release activity and whether its planning model matches your team’s work. |
| Trac | Project management and issue tracking. | Assess whether its issue-centered approach supplies the task planning and collaboration features you need. |
| Scrumlens | An agile retrospective tool. | It is not established by the roundup description as a full project manager; consider it an adjacent team-process tool unless its current capabilities demonstrate otherwise. |
| dotProject | A web-based, multi-user application. | Check current maintenance, license, security updates, and the specific project-management features available today. |
| TaskBoard | Kanban-inspired task tracking. | Confirm whether it is maintained and whether task tracking alone is enough for your project governance needs. |
The descriptions in this table reflect how LinuxLinks characterizes the candidates; they do not independently establish present-day product status or terms. The count also matters: Scrumlens is described as a retrospective tool, not a complete project manager, so treating all 15 entries as interchangeable would overstate the list’s scope.

How to choose a tool for your workflow
Match the tool to the method of work
Start with the work your team actually needs to coordinate. A Kanban board may suit a small team moving tasks through a simple workflow. Scrum teams need a workable way to organize backlogs and sprints. Issue tracking is central to software maintenance, while portfolio planning may require dependencies, timelines, budgets, or reporting across projects. A tool’s feature count matters less than whether its model fits your process.
OpenProject’s vendor-authored 2026 comparison distinguishes tools along these lines: it presents OpenProject for classic, agile, or hybrid workflows; Redmine for lightweight issue tracking and plugin extensibility; GitLab for software teams combining planning with source management and DevOps; Tuleap for agile work and application lifecycle management; and Taiga for Scrum and Kanban. These are the vendor’s characterizations, not independent comparative test results. GitLab appears as a contextual example in that comparison, not as one of the 15 candidates in the LinuxLinks list.

Decide who will host and operate it
Managed cloud hosting can reduce the work of running servers, while self-hosting gives an organization more direct control over its deployment and data environment. With self-hosting, that control comes with responsibility for infrastructure, access security, backups, monitoring, upgrades, and recovery. Macro’s comparison, last verified July 27, 2026, identifies setup and ongoing operational work as important trade-offs when choosing self-hosted software.
Before committing, establish who will install updates, test backups, monitor availability, and respond to security issues. If no one owns those jobs, a nominally free self-hosted edition may be a poor fit.

- Complete portfolio kit — not a laminated poster: magnetic dry-erase board, 660 status magnets with organizers, wooden easel, markers, eraser, and wall-mount hardware.
- Track up to 20 projects on one board for PMO, program, and executive reviews — status, risk, budget, and timeline without digging through spreadsheets.
- 660 color-coded status magnets for health, milestones, risks, and priority so the room can read the portfolio in seconds (on-track / at-risk / blocked).
- Large 44" × 22.5" frameless EVA magnetic whiteboard — big enough for standups and leadership reviews, portable between rooms (lightweight board; kit ships as a full package).
- Write owners, sponsors, budgets, dates, and risks on the dry-erase fields — one living portfolio view instead of a slide deck that goes stale.
Check the license and the meaning of “free”
Read the current license in the product’s repository rather than relying on a directory label or marketing description. Open source does not necessarily mean every hosted edition, premium feature, or support option is free. Conversely, a free download does not by itself establish that the software uses an open-source license. Macro also cautions that some products marketed as open source may use source-available licenses with restrictions.
For hosted offerings, check current plan limits, feature restrictions, user allowances, and support terms directly with the provider. The available comparisons do not establish a synchronized, vendor-verified pricing and plan-limit table for all 15 candidates.

- ENHANCED STRATEGY: Elevate your Project L experience with strategic goals that test your finesse.
- EARN CREDITS: Perform finesses to earn valuable credits and gain an advantage during your turn.
- EXPAND YOUR GAME: The Finesse expansion adds depth to Project L by introducing new ways to play and score points.
- COMPROMISE OR DEVIATE: Completing goals may require strategic compromises or deviations from your original strategy.
- FAST-PACED FUN: Enjoy the same fast-paced gameplay of Project L with added strategic depth.
Include operating effort in the cost
Even when the software license has no charge, self-hosted use can require paid infrastructure and staff time for administration, backups, upgrades, and monitoring. Compare that total effort with any managed option and its recurring charges. Also consider the cost of migrating data or adapting workflows if the tool proves unsuitable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOpenProject: the clearest documented free self-hosted example
Among these candidates, the available product-specific details are most complete for OpenProject. Its official Community Edition page says the edition is free of charge, supports unlimited users and projects, and is installed on the customer’s infrastructure. The page describes installation on major Linux distributions or with Docker, and warns: “Please note that you need knowledge in server administration to set up and run OpenProject properly and securely.”

- Hegemony is an asymmetric politico-economic card-driven board game for 2-4 players that puts you in the role of one of the socio-economic groups in a fictional state: The Working Class, the Middle Class, the Capitalist Class and the State itself.
- WILL YOU BE THE ONE TO LEAD YOUR CLASS TO VICTORY? Players have their own separate goals, they are all limited by a series of policies that affect most of their actions.
- INTRIGUE: You will decide how Hegemony plays out. Will you build alliances and negotiate to lead your class to victory, or will you resort to Machiavellian maneuvers to seal the fate of your enemies?
- MECHANICS: Hegemony is an asymmetric card-driven politico-economic game that makes use of mechanics like Resource Management, Hand Management, Voting and Variable Player Powers.
OpenProject’s GitHub repository identifies the software as GPL-3.0 and lists capabilities including project and portfolio management, agile boards, Gantt planning, product and release planning, time tracking, cost reporting, budgeting, bug tracking, wikis, forums, meeting records, and integrations. The repository describes a free self-hosted Community Edition alongside a commercial Enterprise edition. Confirm the current edition details and installation guidance before deployment; the vendor’s 2026 comparison distinguishes paid Enterprise cloud and on-premises editions, including support and premium or security add-ons.
Quick Recap
Practical checks before a team adopts any candidate
- License: Find the current license in the project’s repository and check whether it permits your intended use.
