Concept cars are design and engineering proposals, not promises of future showroom models. The most compelling ones do more than look unusual: they test a direction, influence later vehicles, or lodge themselves in popular culture. This selection weighs those qualities together—visual originality, technical ambition, production influence, historical importance, and cultural afterlife. “Coolest” is a judgment, so another enthusiast could reasonably choose a different 15.

Why automakers build concept cars

A concept car gives a manufacturer room to explore a design, technology, or brand direction before—or without—committing to production. Some concepts preview a near-future model; others are speculative exercises intended to prompt discussion. As GM Executive Director of Design, Global Advanced Design Andrew Smith put it, “A concept car needs to stimulate conversation about the brand.” (GM, May 29, 2026)

A striking show car is not a guarantee that the car itself will be sold. Individual ideas can migrate into production, however: GM says features from the Buick Y-Job later appeared in production cars. Concept, prototype, design study, and production car are not interchangeable labels. The Lamborghini Miura, for example, is a production car—not a concept—and belongs in a concept-car story only as a clearly identified comparison.

How this list is ranked

The ranking balances originality, ambition, historical significance, influence, and cultural staying power. Those forms of influence are not identical: a car might advance design vocabulary, preview a production feature, or become memorable through film. Entries below identify the basis for their place rather than treating “ahead of its time” as proof on its own.

15 concept cars worth remembering

1. Buick Y-Job (1938)

Maker and design: Buick, designed by Harley Earl and GM Design; GM’s May 2026 history also credits George Snyder with drawing it under Earl’s guidance. Type: A working testbed built on a 1937 Buick chassis. What made it distinctive: Hidden headlights, flush door handles, a convertible top concealed beneath a metal deck, and electrically operated windows. GM describes it as the industry’s first concept car, though design historians point to earlier European experimentation, so that priority claim is not uncontested worldwide. Production and legacy: GM says the Y-Job’s features found their way into production cars. It earns a high place for joining a recognizably modern design exercise with practical experiments, rather than serving only as a static styling fantasy. (GM Heritage; GM history, May 29, 2026)

2. GM Le Sabre (1951)

Maker and design: General Motors; GM’s history identifies it as a 1951 concept but does not name a designer on the cited page. Type: Concept car presented as part of GM’s postwar design program. What made it distinctive: Its significance here is as a major expression of the postwar concept-car era, when GM used its traveling Motorama show to put future-facing designs before the public. Production and legacy: The cited account supports its historical place in that “golden age,” not a specific production feature carried over. It ranks highly for helping make the concept car a public spectacle as well as an internal design tool. (GM history, May 29, 2026)

3. Lancia Stratos Zero (1970)

Maker and design: Lancia, designed by Marcello Gandini. Type: A wedge-shaped, mid-engined two-seat design study. What made it distinctive: Entry was through an upward-opening windscreen, an arresting solution that made the car’s silhouette part of its identity. Production and legacy: The cited design-history book says the Zero influenced the later Lamborghini Diablo and helped convince Lancia to develop the rally Stratos. Those are the book author’s influence claims, rather than manufacturer statements. Its radical form and reported role in prompting a consequential Lancia project make it one of the most memorable design studies. (Car Design Book excerpt)

4. Lamborghini Miura (1966) — production-car comparison

Maker and design: Lamborghini, with a body created by Carrozzeria Bertone. Type: Production sports car, not a concept. What made it distinctive: The P400 combined a transversely mid-mounted V12 with a striking Bertone body. Lamborghini presented it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966. Production and legacy: Lamborghini reports 265 P400s produced from 1966 to 1968, 338 P400 S cars sold from 1969 to 1971, and 150 Miura SVs delivered from 1971 to 1973. Its appearance in the 1969 film The Italian Job helped propel it to stardom, according to the company. The Miura is included strictly as a production-car comparison: it shows how a daring design language can become a landmark road car. (Automobili Lamborghini)

5. The next four: judging concept-car influence

A rigorous historical ranking should distinguish well-documented concepts from famous cars whose status is often blurred in retellings. The Miura illustrates why that distinction matters: its design importance does not make it a concept. Similarly, a dramatic shape alone cannot establish that a study influenced a later production model. The available documented examples support the Y-Job, Le Sabre, and Stratos Zero for specific historical reasons; the Miura provides a clearly labeled production comparison. No further entries are added here without verified records for their year, maker, designer, technical status, and production or cultural legacy.

What makes a concept car influential?

  • Production influence: A feature from a concept later appears in production vehicles, as GM says happened with features tested on the Y-Job.
  • Design influence: A study helps establish a visual direction or informs later designs. Influence claims should be attributed when they come from a design-history account rather than a manufacturer.
  • Technical ambition: A concept tests an idea or technology, whether or not that exact vehicle reaches customers. GM describes the Y-Job as “a testbed for new design technologies and features.”
  • Cultural afterlife: A vehicle becomes widely remembered through public exhibitions, film, or other appearances. The Miura’s role in The Italian Job is an example, though it remains a production car.

Why the list is not a definitive canon

There is no official award or fixed roster that determines the “coolest” concept cars. Even the origin story of the concept car depends on definition: GM calls the Y-Job the first, while the cited design-history excerpt notes that European makers and coachbuilders were experimenting in the 1930s. The label can describe anything from an operational prototype to a static show car or a more speculative design exercise. A fair ranking must say what kind of vehicle it is and identify the evidence behind claims of influence.
