Some motorcycles from the 2000s can still outshine newer bikes in specific ways: distinctive engine character, memorable design, a direct riding feel, or a place in motorcycle history. That does not make them universally faster, safer, more reliable, or better value. The 15 examples below span different classes, so each is worth judging against modern bikes by the qualities that matter to you.

The list draws on Gadget Review’s September 23, 2026 roundup. Its model descriptions are useful context, not results from a controlled comparison. One period specification can be checked against a manufacturer source: Yamaha announced 172 PS at 12,500 rpm for the 2004 European-market YZF-R1 before forced-air intake.

What “beats modern bikes” means here

These motorcycles do not form a single fair head-to-head contest. The list includes supersports and superbikes, naked roadsters, a sport-tourer, and high-speed sport models. A bike may stand out for its engine layout or riding character without matching a current equivalent for electronic rider aids or other modern features.

Compare a specific older model with a current bike intended for the same use. Consider usable power, mass and handling, ergonomics, rider aids, parts availability, service demands, and verified local purchase price. The available sources do not establish a blanket winner on performance, safety, reliability, or value.

15 motorcycles from the 2000s that still have a case

1. Yamaha YZF-R1 (2004–2006): an analog-feeling liter bike

Gadget Review highlights the R1’s high output and direct, analog riding experience. Yamaha’s announcement for the 2004 European-market model specifies 172 PS at 12,500 rpm before forced-air intake. That is a period manufacturer specification, not evidence that this R1 is quicker than a modern superbike.

2. Suzuki GSX-R1000 (2001–2002): an early liter-bike milestone

The roundup presents this generation as a formative liter bike, emphasizing its aluminum frame and direct feel. Its horsepower and price claims are not independently established here. Its appeal is best understood as a period performance design, not a verified value or speed advantage over current bikes.

3. Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R (2005–2006): 636 cc for street use

The 636 cc engine is the roundup’s distinguishing point: it gives this ZX-6R a larger displacement than the 600 cc norm described for its rivals. The source’s power and market-price figures are unverified, so the displacement is a more defensible basis for considering it than a broad performance claim.

4. Honda CBR929RR (2000–2001): a lightweight superbike concept

Gadget Review describes the CBR929RR as a lightweight superbike with ram-air induction. No primary Honda specification is available in the cited sources to substantiate additional performance figures. Its case here rests on the model’s place in the period’s superbike conversation, not a measured comparison with newer machines.

5. Ducati 999 (2003–2006): an L-twin with desmodromic valves

The 999 pairs a 998 cc L-twin with Ducati’s desmodromic valve actuation, details the roundup uses to frame it as track-oriented. Its claimed power and price figures are not independently verified here. Riders considering one should assess the exact bike’s condition and service records rather than infer ownership costs from its reputation or age.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

6. Aprilia RSV Mille R (2001–2003): V-twin and chassis focus

The RSV Mille R is included for its 998 cc V-twin and chassis engineering. The roundup’s performance and price assertions lack model-specific corroboration in the cited material. The bike may appeal to riders who value that engine configuration and period chassis character, but the evidence does not support a claim that it outperforms modern alternatives.

7. Kawasaki Z1000 (2003–2006): an early streetfighter look

With a 953 cc inline-four and angular styling, the Z1000 is presented as an early modern streetfighter. Calling it the model that “established the blueprint” is an interpretation, not a settled fact. Its strongest case is its distinctive naked-bike identity in a list otherwise heavy on faired sport machines.

8. Triumph Speed Triple (2005–2007): a characterful 1,050 cc triple

The roundup emphasizes the sound and character of the 1,050 cc triple. Those are subjective qualities, not objective proof of superiority. The Speed Triple makes most sense for a rider who values a distinctive engine experience and naked-bike format over a direct comparison of lap times or electronics.

9. Yamaha MT-01 (2005–2012): an unusual large-twin roadster

The MT-01 combines a large air-cooled V-twin with a roadster chassis, an unusual pairing in the roundup. Its production span runs through 2012, so it is not exclusively a 2000s motorcycle. The source’s torque and price comparisons are unverified and should not be treated as established advantages.

10. Honda VFR800, fifth generation (1998–2001): V4 sport-touring

The fifth-generation VFR800 is noted for its V4 and gear-driven cams. Its range begins in 1998, before the 2000s, so it is more accurate to call it a turn-of-the-century generation than a motorcycle made only during that decade. Longevity and price claims in the roundup have not been independently validated here.

11. MV Agusta F4 1000R (2006–2009): exotic inline-four

The F4 1000R is described as an exotic 998 cc inline-four. Gadget Review specifically flags valve-clearance service as an ownership consideration; that note is not a general reliability ranking. For upkeep requirements, consult service documentation for the exact model year and market.

12. Suzuki Hayabusa, first generation (1999–2007): aerodynamic high-speed design

The first-generation Hayabusa is known in this roundup for its aerodynamic design and high-speed legacy. Its span starts in 1999, outside the decade. Historical high-speed associations are not a recommendation to test maximum speed on public roads, and the cited material does not establish how it compares with a current bike.

13. Honda RC51 / RVT1000R (2000–2006): a V-twin superbike

The RC51, also known as the RVT1000R, is framed around its V-twin superbike layout and racing connection. The championship claims in the roundup have not been checked against an official record in the cited sources, so they should not be used as independently confirmed evidence of superiority.

14. Yamaha YZF-R6 (2006–2007): a high-revving supersport

The roundup emphasizes the R6’s high-revving, supersport focus. Yamaha’s R-Series history supplies manufacturer context for the model’s development and lineage, but does not verify every performance figure in the roundup. This bike’s appeal is tied to a focused supersport format, not a universal advantage over newer motorcycles.

15. Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R (2000–2006): a high-speed sport model

The ZX-12R is highlighted for its high-speed role and monocoque frame. The roundup’s performance figures and comparison with the Hayabusa are not independently established in the cited material. Those historical associations should not be mistaken for a current road-use performance claim.

How to decide whether one is worth buying

A distinctive engine or design can make an older motorcycle compelling, but it does not answer whether a particular used example is a sensible purchase. Before choosing one, compare it with a modern bike in the same class and check the individual motorcycle rather than relying on a model’s legend.

  • Match purpose: compare a supersport with a supersport, a sport-tourer with a sport-tourer, and a naked roadster with a similar roadster.
  • Check the condition and records: age and model reputation cannot substitute for evidence about the motorcycle in front of you.
  • Confirm service needs: use documentation for the exact model year and market. For the F4 1000R, the roundup specifically calls attention to valve-clearance service.
  • Verify price locally: the roundup’s used-price claims are time-sensitive and not independently confirmed here, so check current listings and the condition of comparable examples.
  • Compare equipment and usability: assess rider aids, ergonomics, parts access, and service demands alongside engine character and design.
