Indie Game Reviewer’s 2026 selection spans classic point-and-click puzzles, dialogue-led mysteries, walking simulators, and experimental science fiction. It is a contributor-curated set of favorites, not a ranked scorecard; the best starting point depends on whether you want puzzles, exploration, comedy, or a story shaped by choices.
How IGR defines an adventure game
In its August 23, 2026 article, Indie Game Reviewer (IGR), led by Greg Costikyan with contributions from its team, uses “adventure game” broadly. Alongside classic point-and-click titles, the selection includes narrative-first games and walking simulators. IGR excludes AAA games from its main indie selection but acknowledges Syberia: The World Before, Dispatch, and the Life is Strange series as higher-budget examples. It notes that some genre purists may question Life is Strange because it has little puzzle-solving. Read IGR’s article.
The games below are presented as favorites, not ranked from best to worst. Their release years and descriptions reflect IGR’s article; the list is not an independent check of release histories or current store listings.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the list does—and does not—establish
IGR names platforms including Steam, Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS, and Android across the games. Those mentions do not confirm that every title is currently available on every platform, in every region, or in a physical edition. Check the game’s official store or the relevant platform storefront for current availability before buying.
The selection also does not use a common scoring system, so it cannot tell you that one game is objectively the best. Use its descriptions to match a game to your preferred balance of puzzles, dialogue, exploration, humor, and atmosphere.
