Modern cars can gather data through navigation, cellular connections, cameras, infotainment systems, paired phones and connected services. Which pathways are active—and whether information stays in the vehicle or is transmitted—depends on the car’s make, model year, equipment, region, software, service enrollment and settings. These are 14 possible pathways, not a claim that every car uses all of them.

How to understand what your car collects

Start by separating on-device processing or storage from transmission to an automaker or service provider. A sensor or feature may process information locally; a connected service may send some information elsewhere. The vehicle’s privacy notice, owner’s manual and settings are the relevant sources for that specific car. One manufacturer’s disclosure is not a description of every vehicle.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that connected vehicles can involve sensitive information, including precise location and potentially biometric, telematic, video and other personal data. The FTC’s staff report notes that vehicle data may include occupants’ real-time location and, in some vehicles, authentication information such as a fingerprint or iris pattern. See the FTC staff perspective on connected cars and its connected-vehicle resources.

14 possible ways a car can collect or transmit data

1. GPS navigation and location history

A vehicle’s GPS may determine its location, direction and speed, and a navigation or connected service may record location over time. Some systems instead rely on GPS in a connected phone. A location trail can reveal routines and visits to sensitive places; location can also support navigation and safety features. Check whether location is processed in the vehicle, sent to a service, or both. The FTC describes the privacy implications of vehicle location data in its staff report.

2. Embedded cellular modem and telematics

Some vehicles include a cellular modem that supports remote features, diagnostics, assistance or other connected services. The modem’s presence and the data it sends depend on the vehicle and service plan. A built-in connection is distinct from a phone app: deleting an app does not necessarily disable the vehicle’s own connection or its associated services.

3. Automaker app and remote account

When a vehicle is linked to an automaker account, information such as location may be available through that service. Ford’s privacy materials, for example, say that removing a vehicle from associated accounts or resetting it is needed to stop certain account-linked access and transmission; deleting the phone app alone does not disable sharing in the described setup. That is a Ford-specific example, not a universal procedure. See Ford’s privacy information.

4. Driving behavior and vehicle controls

Depending on the vehicle and connected services, data may include speed, braking, seat-belt use, steering or acceleration. Volkswagen lists speed, seat-belt use and braking habits among possible vehicle usage data in its privacy statement. Such examples do not establish that every vehicle records or transmits every driving measure.

5. Diagnostics and performance systems

Warning lights, trouble codes, service needs, odometer readings, fuel or battery level, tire pressure and other performance information may be used for vehicle functions or service. Whether particular fields are transmitted—and to whom—depends on the car and its connected features. Check the vehicle’s privacy notice and service terms for the stated data categories and purposes.

6. In-cabin cameras and driver monitoring

Some vehicles use cameras or other sensing features for safety and driver assistance. Their presence does not mean that cabin video is continuously recorded or uploaded. Tesla says its camera AI data is processed in the vehicle by default and that camera recordings for fleet learning require consent, with a stated safety-event exception. Those conditions apply to Tesla’s described features; see Tesla’s privacy information.

7. Exterior cameras and road-scene sensing

Exterior cameras may observe lanes, signs, traffic lights, vehicles and other surroundings to support driver-assistance features. Tesla describes camera use for lane lines, street signs, traffic-light positions and features such as Autopark. Whether that information is kept locally or shared varies by automaker and feature; consult the relevant vehicle documentation rather than assuming a common practice.

8. Other sensors and safety systems

Connected vehicles may collect sensor readings and vehicle-state information. The FTC describes a range that can extend from vehicle performance to occupant biometrics and real-time location. A sensor’s presence alone does not show that it is always active, identifies a particular person or sends data outside the vehicle. The model-specific documentation is needed to establish those details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Infotainment browsing and app use

An in-car browser, downloaded app or integrated service can generate information about browsing and app use. FTC staff have identified these as data that could be used in secondary ways. The available information and its recipients depend on the infotainment system, apps installed, permissions and applicable privacy terms.

10. Voice commands and microphones

Voice features provide a way to process spoken commands, often to control navigation, calls or other functions. The sources here do not establish that all cars continuously record conversations. Look for the specific system’s explanation of wake-word detection, command processing, storage and sharing; do not treat a microphone’s presence as proof of continuous recording.

11. Paired phones and contacts

Bluetooth, USB, tethering and phone-integration features can make phone-derived information available to the vehicle or an app. Depending on the setup, this may include contacts, call information or location contributed by the connected device. Ford notes that connected devices can contribute location and that its infotainment system can support calls and connected apps. Before transferring or selling a car, check what it imported or retained.

12. Wi-Fi, cellular data and connected infotainment

Connected infotainment can send analytics and app data through Wi-Fi, cellular service or a connected phone’s data plan. Ford describes SYNC configurations in which encrypted analytics may include the VIN, odometer, enabled apps, usage statistics and debugging information. These are Ford examples, not standard fields for all vehicles. Its privacy information describes the relevant arrangements.

13. Emergency and crash reporting

Emergency-assistance features may send location and crash-related information to emergency operators when activated. Ford says certain versions of 911 Assist can share location, crash details, velocity changes, seat-belt status or occupant information. The specific fields and activation conditions are feature-dependent; this data flow can serve a safety purpose and should be evaluated against the feature’s documentation.

14. Third-party services, recipients and secondary use

Connected services can involve an automaker, service providers, integrated content providers, optional third parties or other recipients named in a privacy statement. The FTC’s U.S. action involving GM and OnStar illustrates why consent and recipients matter: the FTC alleged that the companies collected precise location and driving-behavior data through connected services and sold it without informed consent. The FTC finalized an order in January 2026. It bars certain disclosures to consumer reporting agencies for five years and imposes consumer-choice requirements for the order’s 20-year term. These are terms of a specific enforcement action, not a rule governing every automaker. Details are in the FTC’s announcement of the final order.

How to review your car’s data controls

  1. Identify the configuration. Note the make, model year, trim, software version if available, and connected services or plans. Privacy behavior and settings can differ across these details.
  2. Read the current disclosures. Check the automaker’s connected-vehicle and app privacy notices. Look for data categories, purposes, recipients, retention, whether a feature is optional, and available consent or opt-out controls.
  3. Review vehicle settings while parked. Use the owner’s manual to find location, data-sharing, apps, voice, camera and connected-service controls that exist for your vehicle. Do not assume a menu or toggle is available on every model.
  4. Check apps and accounts. Review the automaker app, third-party app permissions and account associations. In Ford’s described account-linked setup, app deletion alone is not sufficient to disable sharing.
  5. Use access or deletion processes where offered. Follow the manufacturer’s process and confirm what information it covers, what exceptions apply and whether deletion affects connected features.
  6. Prepare the car before sale or transfer. Remove personal profiles and paired devices, unlink the vehicle from associated accounts and service plans, and perform the documented master or factory reset. Verify the exact steps in that vehicle’s manual and privacy notice.
  7. Treat VIN-based reports as a starting point. An Associated Press report describes Privacy4Cars offering a free VIN-based privacy report. A VIN report can help identify stated practices, but it does not prove which settings or services are active in a particular car. See the AP report.

What a tracker blocker cannot do

A phone or key signal pouch does not disable a vehicle’s GPS, built-in cellular telematics, automaker account or connected apps. Nor does a generic plug-in device establish what information a particular car transmits. Review the vehicle’s own settings, account links and reset procedure; the available controls are model-specific.

How to compare privacy practices between vehicles

For a specific car, use its current privacy notice, settings and manual to answer these questions rather than inferring its behavior from another make:
