The right smart lock depends first on your door and fallback plan, not on a universal ranking. A full deadbolt replacement changes the exterior hardware; a retrofit motor keeps your existing cylinder and key. Then check how everyone will enter—PIN, phone, touch, fingerprint, NFC, face recognition or a physical key—followed by hub requirements, battery recovery and the exact door dimensions.
The 13 entries below combine current candidates identified by Security.org and WIRED with two products that should not be bought as current choices. Availability, generation and bundle details can change during 2026, so verify the exact regional SKU before ordering. No current prices are established in the cited material.
What to check before choosing a front-door smart lock
Replacement deadbolt or retrofit?
A replacement deadbolt removes the existing lock and installs a new exterior and interior assembly. It is usually the cleanest route for a homeowner replacing an entire lock, but it requires the door to have compatible bore holes, backset and thickness. A retrofit motor mounts over the inside of your existing deadbolt. The outside appearance and existing key can remain unchanged, which is useful for renters or households that already have keyed-alike cylinders. A retrofit cannot improve the strength of the underlying deadbolt; its security depends on that hardware.

How will people unlock it?
- Keypad/PIN: Useful for children, guests and service providers without sharing a phone. Confirm whether a keypad is included or an extra accessory.
- Phone app: Convenient, but remote operation may require a bridge, hub or internet connection.
- Touch or proximity: Fast when supported by the exact phone and account configuration.
- Fingerprint or face recognition: Reduces the need to carry a device, but enrollment and environmental conditions matter.
- NFC or wallet credential: Check the supported phone platform and whether the feature is available in your region.
- Mechanical key: A valuable fallback if batteries, radios or accounts fail.
What happens when power or connectivity fails?
Read the exact instructions for battery type, low-battery warnings, emergency power contacts and mechanical-key operation. A lock can still operate locally while internet remote access is unavailable, but that behavior is model-specific. Never assume that a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Thread or Matter label means every feature works without an additional hub or bridge.

13 named options and their evidence status
The table distinguishes specifications reported by a manufacturer or publication from information that was not stated. “Verify” means you should check the current product page, installation guide and certification record for your market before purchase.
| Option | Type and entry methods reported | Connectivity or remote-access note | Fallback, power and security evidence | 2026 buying status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Schlage Encode Smart Wi-Fi Deadbolt | Full deadbolt replacement; keypad and app access; adjustable backset. Allegion’s 2024 New Zealand brochure states a specified door-thickness range. | Built-in Wi-Fi. Allegion says this allows locking or unlocking from anywhere; that is a vendor claim and the brochure is regional. | Four AA batteries, 100 access codes and a low-battery indicator are listed in the brochure. Verify the US generation and certification. | Candidate, subject to regional SKU verification. |
| Level Lock Pro | Retrofit-style interior hardware; physical key, NFC and Apple Home Key are reported. Optional keypad is available. | Bluetooth is reported, with Matter and major smart-home compatibility. Hub and remote requirements depend on the configuration. | WIRED reports BHMA/ANSI ratings for this model. Confirm the exact rating record and SKU. | Candidate; verify current bundle and certification nomenclature. |
| Lockly Visage Zeno Series | Replacement lock with keypad, fingerprint and face recognition, plus mechanical-key entry. | Exact radio and bridge requirements were not stated in WIRED’s comparison; check the current variant. | Rechargeable USB-C batteries; WIRED reports an ANSI Grade 2 rating. Confirm the product variant and listing. | Candidate, pending model-specific verification. |
| Yale Approach Lock | Retrofit that retains the original key; optional keypad/fingerprint accessory is reported. | Connection details vary by accessory and setup; confirm whether remote access needs a bridge. | Its security rating depends on the existing underlying lock, according to WIRED, rather than the retrofit motor alone. | Candidate for renters or preserved exterior hardware. |
| Nest x Yale | Replacement smart lock family named in Security.org’s September 2026 guide; exact current generation and entry methods were not stated in Security.org’s guide. | Verify current account, hub and remote-access requirements. | Battery and emergency-entry details were not stated in Security.org’s guide. | Candidate only after checking the current SKU and ecosystem support. |
| Schlage Connect | Smart-lock line included in Security.org’s 2026 guide; exact keypad, handing and generation details were not stated there. | Verify the radio version and whether a compatible hub is required for remote control. | Exact certification, battery and emergency-power information were not stated in Security.org’s 2026 guide. | Candidate with model-number verification required. |
| Kwikset SmartCode 913 | Keypad deadbolt named by Security.org; Security.org’s 2026 guide does not establish the current bundle or connectivity features. | Check whether the specific unit is standalone or hub-connected. | Verify mechanical-key, battery and certification details for the exact generation. | Candidate only when the current installation guide matches your door. |
| August smart lock | August locks are named in Security.org’s guide; the exact model and whether it is retrofit or replacement were not specified. | Do not infer bridge or internet behavior from the family name; confirm the SKU. | Verify key continuity, battery type and emergency operation. | Family-level lead, not a single verified 2026 SKU. |
| Yale smart locks | Yale smart locks appear in Security.org’s guide, but no single model is identified in Security.org’s summary. | Yale products use different modules and ecosystems; verify the exact radio and hub. | Check certification and fallback details for the particular lock. | Family-level lead requiring model selection. |
| Level Lock Pro with optional keypad | The keypad configuration adds PIN entry to the Level Lock Pro’s reported physical-key, NFC and Apple Home Key options. | Confirm whether your desired Matter or remote features require a hub and which keypad bundle is sold in your region. | Use the same exact-model certification check as the base lock. | Useful configuration if PIN access is essential; verify bundle contents. |
| Yale Approach with keypad/fingerprint accessory | Retrofit approach retaining the existing key, with the reported optional keypad/fingerprint accessory. | Accessory and bridge requirements must be checked together; they are not interchangeable assumptions. | Underlying deadbolt strength remains the limiting physical factor. | Useful configuration when key continuity and PIN or fingerprint entry are both required. |
| Kwikset Kevo | Historical touch-oriented product line. | Security.org reports that the line was discontinued and its app is no longer supported. | Unsupported software makes it unsuitable as a current purchase regardless of old feature lists. | Do not buy as a new 2026 recommendation. |
| Aqara U300 | Previously considered in smart-lock comparisons. | WIRED removed this pick in its May 2026 update because it was unavailable. | Do not treat earlier reviews as proof of current stock or support. | Availability watch, not a current recommendation. |
How the strongest candidates differ
Best fit when you must keep the existing key
The Level Lock Pro and Yale Approach are the clearest retrofit-oriented choices in the cited material. They leave the exterior cylinder in place, but the practical result depends on the condition and strength of that original deadbolt. Measure the interior clearance and confirm that the retrofit body can turn the bolt fully without binding. If a keypad is important, verify whether it is included or sold separately before comparing total cost.

Best fit when you want keypad-first access
The Schlage Encode brochure describes a built-in keypad, while the Lockly Visage Zeno Series is reported with keypad, fingerprint and face recognition. The SmartCode 913 is also identified as a keypad lock, although Security.org’s 2026 guide does not establish its current generation’s complete connectivity set. A keypad is not automatically a remote-access system: determine whether codes are managed locally, through Bluetooth, or through a hub and internet service.
Best fit for biometric or face entry
Lockly Visage Zeno is the only named option here with both fingerprint and face-recognition entry reported by WIRED. Treat those as publication-reported features, not a guarantee that every Zeno variant has the same sensors or software. Confirm enrollment capacity, outdoor exposure limits and the mechanical-key procedure in the current manual.

Best fit for an integrated smart-home ecosystem
WIRED reports Matter and major smart-home compatibility for Level Lock Pro, alongside Bluetooth, NFC and Apple Home Key. Compatibility badges still require checking the exact phone, hub and regional firmware. Nest x Yale, Schlage Connect, August and Yale families can vary substantially by module or generation, so a family name is not enough to establish interoperability.
Door and installation checks
Do these checks before ordering. If any measurement falls outside the current manual, choose another model or consult a locksmith rather than forcing the installation.

- Identify the lock type. Confirm that the door uses a single-cylinder deadbolt or the preparation required by the chosen lock. A retrofit needs an existing compatible interior thumbturn and cylinder.
- Measure backset. Record the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore. Use the lock’s stated adjustable range only when the exact model supports it.
- Measure thickness and bore. Check door thickness, face-bore diameter and edge-bore dimensions against the installation sheet.
- Check handing and clearance. Some assemblies require a particular orientation, and interior trim must clear the frame, glass and storm door.
- Inspect alignment. With the door open, extend and retract the bolt. Then close the door and confirm that the bolt enters the strike without pressure. Misalignment causes motor stalls and rapid battery drain.
- Check exterior exposure. Confirm the product’s weather and temperature limits for the side of the door exposed to rain, snow or direct sun.
- Plan account ownership. Decide who controls the administrator account, how guests receive and lose access, and how you will recover the account if a phone is lost.
- Test before handing over keys. Install batteries, pair the lock, create a temporary code, test local operation, test remote operation if offered, and deliberately test the emergency fallback.
Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave and Matter
Built-in Wi-Fi is convenient because it can avoid a separate bridge, but it also places the lock directly on your home network and can increase battery demands. Allegion’s Schlage Encode brochure says, “Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to lock/unlock your door from anywhere”; this is a manufacturer statement in a 2024 New Zealand document, not an independent test result and not proof that every regional Encode SKU has identical behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
Bluetooth commonly supports nearby phone control and setup. Remote access may require a bridge or compatible hub. Z-Wave and similar home-automation radios also require a controller for off-site control. Matter improves interoperability at the protocol level, but the phone, controller, Thread border router or other required equipment still matters. Before buying, write down the hub already in your home and verify that the exact lock, not merely its product family, supports it.

Security evidence versus smart convenience
A keypad, app or biometric reader describes convenience; it does not by itself establish resistance to forced entry. Check certification for the exact lock and configuration. Do not transfer a Grade 1 or Grade 2 statement from one model to another model in the same family, and do not treat a retrofit motor’s rating as the rating of the deadbolt underneath it.
Security.org reports that eight specialists tested 15 smart locks over five months in 2026, using each for at least two weeks, conducting more than 150 simulated break-ins and analyzing 28 BHMA smart-lock strength reports. The organization says its rankings considered ease of use, security, mobile-app quality and value. Those are Security.org’s methods and findings, and they do not establish a market-wide burglary or failure rate. See its 2026 smart-lock guide for the publisher’s model-specific discussion.
WIRED reports an ANSI Grade 2 rating for Lockly Visage Zeno and BHMA/ANSI ratings for Level Lock Pro. Verify the current certification record and nomenclature before treating either statement as a security conclusion. For Yale Approach, WIRED notes that the security rating depends on the existing underlying lock.

- Enable every low-battery alert in the app and, where offered, push or email notifications.
- Keep the specified replacement batteries in the house, not inside the locked room.
- Learn the emergency-power method. Some models accept temporary external power; others require the mechanical key.
- Store a physical key in a secure, reachable location outside the home or with a trusted person. Do not hide it in an obvious place beside the door.
- Test the fallback with the door open after installation and again after changing batteries.
- If remote access stops working, try local keypad, Bluetooth, NFC or key entry before removing the lock. Internet service failure does not necessarily disable local operation.
How to verify a 2026 listing
Product pages often combine several generations, colors and bundles. Match the manufacturer’s model number in the listing to the installation guide and certification record. Confirm that the box includes the keypad, bridge, batteries and mounting hardware you need. Check the seller’s return policy in case the door preparation or interior clearance is incompatible. The Aqara U300’s removal from WIRED’s May 2026 list because it was unavailable demonstrates why an older review is not proof of current stock.
Also check regional documentation. The Schlage Encode specifications cited above come from Allegion New Zealand’s 2024 brochure, so US buyers must verify the domestic SKU, supported app and certification rather than importing those figures unchanged. The same caution applies to voltage, radio frequency, privacy terms and emergency-entry rules for any internationally listed lock.
