Reports say personal data tied to about 8.8 million people in Denmark’s CPR registry was exposed after hackers exploited a company’s legitimate access to the system. A separate report says leaked material reviewed by Politiken showed at least three Pays profiles using “123456,” including an administrator profile. That password detail has not been established as the official cause of the breach: it is a media-reported finding, alongside an anonymous hacker’s account.
What is reported to have happened?
Coverage of a Danish government disclosure said hackers exploited a Danish company’s access to the CPR system, the country’s civil registration register. Names, addresses and CPR numbers associated with about 8.8 million registered people were reportedly exposed. What is the evidence for the “123456” connection?
On 9 October 2026, DK Nyt/Ritzau reported that Politiken had reviewed leaked material showing at least three Pays profiles using “123456,” one of them an administrator profile. The Copenhagen Post relayed an anonymous hacker’s claim that a former employee’s leaked password enabled access through a small Danish company. The outlet said the hacker’s account had not been independently confirmed. Jens Myrup Pedersen, a professor in Aarhus University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, told Politiken, as relayed by DK Nyt/Ritzau: “There is effectively no security; it is an open door. Why a weak password is not the whole security story
Even if the reported password account is accurate, a weak credential alone does not explain how an organization’s access was set up or why it could be used to retrieve such a large volume of information. CSIS’s analysis, which conditions its account of the former employee and “123456” on the hacker’s claim being true, also raises questions about account lifecycle, access scope and monitoring. - Credential hygiene: A common password is easy to guess, and unique credentials reduce the risk that one exposed password can be reused elsewhere.
- Account lifecycle: Organizations need to disable or change access when an employee leaves or no longer needs it.
- Access scope: A connected company account should have only the access needed for its work.
- Monitoring: Query volume and unusual retrieval patterns need to be detectable and investigated.
What should people whose information may be involved watch for?
Accurate names, addresses and CPR details can make follow-up phishing or impersonation attempts seem legitimate.
