What are the best 120Hz monitors for PS5? The right choice depends on the resolution you want: a monitor with HDMI 2.1 is the straightforward route to 4K at 120Hz, while a verified 1440p display can deliver 120Hz without requiring 4K. A monitor’s advertised maximum refresh rate alone does not confirm that the PS5 will use that rate at your chosen resolution.
These five options are grouped by use case, not presented as a universal ranking. The shortlist reflects RTINGS’ PS5 and PS5 Pro monitor guide, updated September 2, 2026; check the exact model, regional suffix, current price, and availability before buying.
Five 120Hz monitors for PS5, by use case
All five models below are identified by RTINGS as options for PS5, but they differ in resolution, image characteristics, and trade-offs. The console’s maximum game output is 120Hz; higher monitor refresh ceilings matter mainly if you also connect a PC.

| Use case | Monitor | PS5 signal and connection | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium image quality | ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM | 27-inch 4K QD-OLED; HDMI 2.1; supports PS5 4K at 120Hz | Its 240Hz ceiling is useful for PC, not a higher PS5 game refresh rate. |
| Premium alternative | Dell Alienware AW2725Q | 4K QD-OLED; HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for PS5 and PS5 Pro | Consider it alongside the ASUS if you want a premium 4K QD-OLED; compare current regional pricing and exact specifications. |
| Mid-range 4K all-rounder | Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx | 4K; HDMI 2.1 bandwidth; supports PS5 signal modes | RTINGS notes higher brightness for bright rooms, but weaker dark-room contrast than OLED. |
| Value-focused 4K | Dell S2725QS | HDMI 2.1; 120Hz | RTINGS notes weaker motion handling and HDR limitations, so it is not the pick for leading gaming performance. |
| Budget 1440p | KOORUI S2721PM | 1440p at 120Hz on PS5; VRR support | It lacks the HDMI 2.1 bandwidth needed for 4K at 120Hz. |
These descriptions summarize RTINGS’ guide and product assessments; they are not results from hands-on testing for this article. Product specifications, model suffixes, stock, and prices can vary by region and change over time.

Can PS5 run 120Hz on a 1440p monitor?
Yes. Sony supports 1440p output on PS5, and its 1440p output test checks supported SDR and HDR modes at 60Hz and 120Hz, as well as VRR when the display supports it. That does not mean every monitor advertised as 1440p and 120Hz will accept the PS5’s signal. Confirm PS5 compatibility for the exact model, then run the console’s test before relying on 120Hz or VRR.
A 1440p monitor can be a sensible way to target 120Hz if you do not need 4K. The KOORUI S2721PM is RTINGS’ budget example in this group: RTINGS reports PS5 1440p 120Hz and VRR support, but not the HDMI 2.1 bandwidth needed for 4K 120Hz.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 for 120Hz on PS5?
No—not for every 120Hz mode. HDMI 2.1 is the straightforward choice when you want 4K at 120Hz. A compatible 1440p display can also provide 120Hz without HDMI 2.1, as the KOORUI example illustrates. The monitor must still accept the relevant PS5 signal through its HDMI input; a high refresh rate listed for a PC connection does not establish console compatibility.

Whether you receive that mode depends on the game, display, console settings, and connection path. A monitor’s 144Hz, 240Hz, or higher maximum does not raise the PS5’s 120Hz ceiling.

- Incredible Images: The Acer KB272 G0bi 27" monitor with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.
- 27" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Widescreen IPS Monitor | Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible)
- Refresh Rate: Up to 120Hz | Response Time: 1ms VRB | Brightness: 250 nits | Pixel Pitch: 0.311mm
How to choose among these monitors
Choose resolution and connection first
- For 4K at 120Hz: prioritize a monitor with HDMI 2.1 and verified PS5 support for 4K 120Hz on the HDMI input you will use.
- For 1440p at 120Hz: check that the exact monitor accepts 1440p 120Hz from PS5. Use Sony’s 1440p output test to confirm the available modes.
- For a PC as well: a monitor rated above 120Hz may use that extra refresh capacity with a suitable PC, but it does not increase PS5 game output.
Check VRR and motion behavior
VRR can synchronize output from a compatible PS5 game with a compatible HDMI 2.1 display. Sony cautions that results vary by display and game, so look for confirmed compatibility rather than assuming that a monitor’s VRR label guarantees the feature will work as desired on PS5. Motion handling and input lag are also relevant when comparing gaming monitors; the Dell S2725QS, for example, is a value-leaning 4K option with motion-handling limitations noted by RTINGS.
Match the screen to the room and your priorities
HDR is not a single measure of picture quality. Contrast and brightness affect how an image looks in a dark room or a bright one. RTINGS identifies the Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx as brighter for bright rooms, while noting weaker dark-room contrast than OLED. For the two QD-OLED choices, weigh the premium image-quality positioning against current prices and the space available for a 27-inch display; verify the exact model dimensions and regional specifications before ordering.

Enable and verify 120Hz on PS5
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s HDMI input that supports the intended signal mode. For 4K at 120Hz, use an HDMI 2.1-capable input.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and enable 120Hz Output.
- If using a 1440p monitor, choose Test 1440p Output and review whether the display supports the 60Hz or 120Hz mode you want and, where applicable, VRR.
- If 4K at 120Hz is missing, check that you are using the monitor’s correct HDMI port, update the monitor firmware, and review the console’s video output settings and cable. Sony recommends the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120Hz.
- Check the game’s own support and settings. Console and monitor capability do not make every game run at 120Hz.
Sony’s support guidance also notes that turning off 120Hz Output can address some video-output problems with affected games and displays. Treat that as a troubleshooting option if enabling the setting causes an issue, rather than as a general requirement.
