There is no single best retro emulator for every PC gamer: the right pick depends on the console or arcade system you want to play and how much setup you are willing to do. For several systems in one interface, start with RetroArch; for a focused choice, consider mGBA for Game Boy systems, DuckStation for PlayStation 1, Dolphin for GameCube and Wii, or PCSX2 for PlayStation 2.
Which retro emulator is best for PC?
Choose by system, not by a universal ranking. RetroArch is a flexible frontend that brings multiple systems together, while standalone emulators focus on particular consoles. Compatibility, setup requirements, and controls can differ by game, region, emulator version, and core. The shortlist below is a starting point, not a benchmark or guarantee that every title will work.
| Emulator | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| RetroArch | Multiple systems in one interface | Uses system-specific cores; requirements and firmware needs vary by core. See Libretro’s BIOS documentation. |
| mGBA | Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color | The documented Libretro core lists BIOS files as optional. The project FAQ describes Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD support, with compatibility caveats. Core documentation; mGBA FAQ. |
| DuckStation | PlayStation 1 | The project README documents desktop builds. Some PAL LibCrypt games can require matching SBI subchannel data. DuckStation project README. |
| Dolphin | GameCube and Wii | A candidate for these systems; check the project’s current official documentation for downloads, setup, and compatibility. Included in the 2026 editorial roundup. |
| PCSX2 | PlayStation 2 | Setup involves BIOS, game images, operating-system support, and controls; compatibility varies. The linked guide is an independent community guide, not an upstream project page. PCSX2 setup guide. |
| PPSSPP | PlayStation Portable | A candidate for PSP games; consult current project setup documentation before choosing it. Included in the 2026 editorial roundup. |
| MAME | Arcade systems | Consider it for arcade preservation if you are prepared for additional configuration. Current technical details are not established here. |
| Snes9x | Super Nintendo | A focused candidate if SNES is your priority; verify current project details before setup. |
| Mesen | Nintendo Entertainment System | A candidate for NES play; confirm the current project version and supported systems. |
| melonDS | Nintendo DS | Check current desktop availability and compatibility in the project’s documentation. |
| Flycast | Dreamcast and other supported platforms | Confirm currently supported systems and setup instructions in project documentation. |
The 2026 roundup offers shortlist context, not controlled testing. The five entries from MAME through Flycast are candidates rather than verified performance recommendations; check their official project pages for current details before downloading.
Should you use RetroArch or a standalone emulator?
Choose RetroArch for a shared interface
RetroArch suits people who want to manage several systems through one frontend. It relies on cores, so you need to select the appropriate core for the system and game. Core choice affects setup and may determine whether a BIOS or other files are needed. Libretro’s BIOS guide documents those differences.

Choose a standalone emulator for a focused system
A system-specific program can make it easier to find the settings and guidance relevant to one console. The trade-off is that you may manage separate applications and configurations if you play across several systems. For example, mGBA targets three Game Boy generations, while DuckStation targets PlayStation 1.
What should you check before installing?
- System coverage: Verify that the emulator or selected RetroArch core supports the system you intend to play.
- BIOS and firmware: Requirements differ. Libretro identifies BIOS files as required for some cores, including Beetle PSX HW and SwanStation, and optional for others, including mGBA and PCSX ReARMed.
- Compatibility: A game may behave differently by title, region, emulator build, or required data. Treat compatibility lists and community guides as orientation rather than a promise.
- Operating system and PC requirements: Check the current project documentation for your operating system and hardware. There is no single minimum-spec target established for all eleven choices.
- Controls: Keyboard input may be enough, but many players prefer a mapped gamepad. A PC-compatible controller is optional; mapping is a comfort and preference choice.
- Download source: Use the emulator project’s official download or documentation channels rather than third-party installer aggregators.
How do BIOS files, game images, and legality work?
A BIOS is a copy of the emulated hardware’s operating system. Some emulator cores need one; others do not. Libretro’s guidance is direct: “You must provide your own BIOS and content in accordance with your local laws as applicable.” Read the relevant core’s setup instructions before assuming a file is required.

Rules for making or using copies of BIOS files and games vary by jurisdiction. Owning a physical game does not, by itself, establish that downloading a game image or BIOS file is lawful where you live. PCSX2’s independent community guide also directs users to supply their own BIOS and legally possessed game images; use it for setup orientation and consult upstream project channels for downloads.

What special setup issues can affect a game?
PlayStation 1 PAL LibCrypt titles
DuckStation’s project README notes that some PAL games use LibCrypt protection and may need matching SBI subchannel data. Without the necessary data, a game can hang, crash, or show gameplay effects. Check the project’s guidance for the specific title rather than treating this as a requirement for every PlayStation 1 game.
