The 11-inch iPad Pro with M5 is an unusually capable tablet in a compact, light body, led by a premium Tandem OLED display and fast performance. Its trade-offs are the high launch price, a single physical port, and the fact that many everyday users may not need its power. It makes the most sense if you will use the screen or demanding creative workflows; otherwise, a less expensive iPad may be better value.
What the 11-inch iPad Pro (M5) offers
Apple introduced this 11-inch model in 2025. It is available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations, with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular. The memory and CPU vary by storage tier:
| Storage | Unified memory | CPU cores | Nano-texture glass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | 12GB | 9-core | Not available |
| 512GB | 12GB | 9-core | Not available |
| 1TB | 16GB | 10-core | Available as an option |
| 2TB | 16GB | 10-core | Available as an option |
These configuration details come from Apple’s technical specifications. The tablet is 5.3mm thick and weighs 444g for Wi-Fi or 446g for Wi-Fi + Cellular.
Pros of the 11-inch iPad Pro
A high-end OLED display in a portable size
The 11-inch screen uses Tandem OLED technology and has a 2420-by-1668 resolution at 264 pixels per inch. It supports adaptive ProMotion refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz, P3 wide color, True Tone, and an antireflective coating. Apple specifies a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, up to 1,000 nits for SDR, and XDR brightness of up to 1,000 nits full-screen or 1,600 nits peak for HDR content. The optional nano-texture glass is restricted to 1TB and 2TB configurations.

M5 performance headroom for demanding work
The M5 includes a GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Neural Accelerators, plus a 16-core Neural Engine. That hardware gives demanding creative and graphics workloads room to run, though an app must support the relevant capabilities to benefit from them.
Apple says selected AI tasks can run up to 3.5 times faster than on M4 and up to 5.6 times faster than on M1. These are Apple’s comparisons for selected tasks, not independent results or a prediction that every app will be faster by those amounts. See Apple’s M5 announcement for the company’s claims.

In TechRadar’s review, its tested 1TB M5 iPad Pro scored 4,121 single-core and 16,240 multi-core in Geekbench. The M4 iPad Pro tested by the same outlet scored 3,700 and 14,523, respectively. TechRadar also reported smooth creative-app use and 4K video export; these results describe that publication’s tested units and experience, not every app or workflow. Modern connectivity and strong external-display support
Apple lists Wi-Fi 7. Comparison reporting also identifies Bluetooth 6 and Thread among the M5 model’s wireless additions. The Thunderbolt/USB 4 port supports charging, DisplayPort, and data transfer up to 40Gb/s. Apple supports one external display at up to 6K and 60Hz or 5K and 120Hz. The limits and connection details are in Apple’s specifications.

Cons and trade-offs
High launch price, before accessories
TechRadar reported a U.S. launch starting price of $999 for the 11-inch M5 model in 2025. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote; prices vary by retailer, configuration, cellular option, and market. A Pencil, keyboard, or hub can raise the total cost.

One physical port can constrain a desk setup
There is one USB-C/Thunderbolt port. If you need to charge the iPad while connecting a camera, storage, or other peripherals, you may need a compatible hub. WIRED notes this limitation for peripheral-heavy creative work.
Software support can limit the workflow
Fast hardware does not guarantee that every iPad app supports every operating-system feature. WIRED’s reviewer found that DaVinci Resolve did not support the iPadOS 26 background-rendering feature in the workflow they tested. Confirm support in the specific app you depend on rather than assuming desktop-equivalent behavior.

Battery estimates are not a full-day guarantee
Apple estimates up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback, or up to 9 hours of cellular web browsing. Apple’s figures come from tests of preproduction units in August and September 2025; the company says actual results vary with settings, use, network, and other factors. 9to5Mac reports the official estimates are unchanged from M4. Apple’s specification page describes the test basis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the M5 iPad Pro worth it for you?
It is a strong fit if
- You want an 11-inch tablet with OLED contrast, ProMotion, and high HDR brightness.
- Your regular work uses demanding creative, graphics, or on-device AI apps that can take advantage of the M5.
- You need Thunderbolt/USB 4 or the supported high-resolution external-display modes.
- You value a slim 444g Wi-Fi model or 446g cellular model for a Pro-class tablet.
Consider a less expensive iPad if
- Your main tasks are browsing, streaming, note-taking, and routine productivity, and you do not need the Pro display or port capabilities.
- You are choosing between the Pro and an iPad Air: WIRED’s assessment is that many buyers will be satisfied with an Air. The deciding factors are whether the Pro’s Tandem OLED/ProMotion display, M5 performance, Thunderbolt support, and professional workflow features justify the price difference for your use.
Should an M4 iPad Pro owner upgrade?
The M5 model’s external design, dimensions, and display are unchanged from M4, according to TechRadar and 9to5Mac. An upgrade decision is therefore less about a new chassis or screen and more about whether the newer chip, configuration options, connectivity, or external-display support matters to you.
- Look at your workload: Upgrade is easier to justify if a demanding GPU or on-device AI task is a real bottleneck. Apple’s AI multipliers apply only to selected tasks, so they should not be treated as a general speed guarantee.
- Check the configuration: The 1TB and 2TB M5 models have 16GB unified memory and a 10-core CPU, versus 12GB and a 9-core CPU on 256GB and 512GB models. Nano-texture glass is optional only at 1TB and 2TB.
- Compare connectivity needs: Consider whether Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, or a 5K 120Hz external display changes your setup.
- Compare actual prices: Check current retailer prices for the M5 and any available M4 unit; the $999 M5 figure is its reported U.S. launch price, not a current market price.

The 11-inch iPad Pro (M5) combines a standout OLED screen, substantial performance headroom, and useful high-end connectivity in a thin, light design. Its price and single-port setup are meaningful compromises, and the M5’s advantages matter most when your apps and workflows use them. Choose it for the display or demanding work—not simply because it is the most powerful iPad.
