Short answer: A 10,000mAh battery stores twice the charge of a 5,000mAh battery when both ratings use comparable voltage and measurement conditions. If the same phone used the same average power, at the same temperature and battery age, the larger battery could ideally run about twice as long. That is an engineering proportion, not a guaranteed real-world result.
Actual hours depend on the phone, screen brightness, processor workload, cellular or Wi-Fi signal, software settings, temperature, charging losses and battery health. Capacity is a useful starting point, but it cannot by itself tell you how many hours either phone will last.
What 10,000mAh means compared with 5,000mAh
mAh means milliampere-hours, a measure of electric charge capacity. A 5,000mAh battery is rated to hold 5,000 milliampere-hours of charge under its specified test conditions; 10,000mAh is twice that charge rating. In a like-for-like comparison, the 10,000mAh pack has twice the charge capacity.

Ebatt = Cbatt × Vbatt
Energy is normally expressed in watt-hours (Wh). Because voltage can differ, two batteries with the same mAh rating can contain different amounts of energy, and a higher-mAh battery is not automatically a proportionally higher-energy battery if its voltage is different. For a phone comparison, look for watt-hours and nominal voltage when the manufacturer discloses them, not just the printed mAh figure.
Charge capacity versus usable capacity
The advertised number is a nameplate rating. The phone cannot use every bit of that charge under every condition. Battery-management electronics reserve some energy, conversion circuits lose some energy, and the phone may shut down before the cell is completely electrically empty. The fraction that reaches the phone’s circuits also changes with temperature, current demand and battery age.
Consequently, “10,000mAh is twice 5,000mAh” describes rated charge capacity. It does not promise twice the usable energy at the phone’s processor, display and radios.

Does a 10,000mAh phone battery last twice as long?
Only under controlled, comparable conditions. If two otherwise identical phones have the same voltage, the same usable-capacity fraction and the same average power draw, doubling charge capacity gives an idealized two-to-one runtime ratio. The smaller battery would provide one unit of runtime and the larger one two units in that simplified model.
This is an inference from the capacity-runtime relationship, not a measured head-to-head result showing that every 10,000mAh phone lasts twice as many hours as every 5,000mAh phone. A phone with a larger battery may also have a larger, brighter display, a faster processor, more radios, heavier cooling hardware or software that consumes more power. Those changes can reduce or eliminate the apparent advantage.
The Department of Energy summarizes the underlying principle this way: a change in battery capacity affects runtime, while a change in battery voltage can affect whether a battery-operated product runs at all. The statement is a general battery-product explanation, not a phone-specific test result.

A simple proportional model
For the same device, an approximate runtime model is:

Runtime ≈ usable battery energy ÷ average device power
If usable energy doubles and average power remains constant, runtime doubles. If the larger phone draws 25% more average power, its ideal advantage falls to roughly 1.6 times rather than 2 times. That example illustrates the relationship; it is not a claim about a particular phone.
Average power is not fixed. A phone may draw little power while reading static text, considerably more while recording video or playing a demanding game, and still more when it is searching for a weak cellular signal. A single battery capacity therefore cannot map to one universal number of hours.
Why real-world runtime differs from the capacity ratio
Screen and workload
The display is often one of a phone’s largest power users. Brightness, refresh rate, screen resolution, always-on features and the amount of time the screen stays active all affect consumption. Gaming, camera recording, navigation, video calls and local video decoding create different processor, graphics and storage loads. Background synchronization, location services and push notifications add additional draw even when the screen is off.

Apple illustrates the importance of workload by publishing separate “up to” figures for the iPhone 14: up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of streamed video playback. Those are model-specific estimates under Apple’s test conditions, not a conversion from mAh to hours and not evidence that a 10,000mAh battery lasts a particular number of hours.

Connectivity and signal quality
Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS radios consume different amounts of energy depending on how often they transmit and receive. A weak cellular signal can make a phone work harder to maintain a connection. Streaming over a mobile network also combines radio activity with display and decoding power. Airplane mode can reduce radio use when connectivity is not needed, although it also disables normal calls and data until you turn individual radios back on.
Brightness and software settings
Higher brightness and longer screen time reduce runtime directly. The Department of Energy recommends lowering brightness, using airplane mode when appropriate and closing unused apps as ways to conserve mobile-device power. Modern operating systems also manage background apps automatically, so force-closing everything is not always beneficial; the practical goal is to reduce unnecessary activity and connectivity.
Temperature
Temperature changes both immediate performance and long-term capacity. Apple says cold conditions can temporarily reduce runtime. The phone may appear to lose charge quickly and recover some reported capacity after returning to a moderate temperature. Apple also warns that ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Avoid leaving a phone in a hot car, on a hot dashboard or under direct sun while charging.
Battery age and health
Lithium-ion cells chemically age. As they age, their maximum usable capacity declines, so a phone originally sold with a 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh rating will not retain that full amount indefinitely. Battery life is the time a device operates before recharging; battery lifespan is the time until the battery needs replacement. Those are different measures.
Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on use and charging behavior, and these figures are design targets rather than a guarantee for every individual battery.

How to compare two actual phones
When choosing between devices, use a controlled comparison rather than assuming the larger number wins. Follow these steps:

- Record the battery rating and units. Note each phone’s stated mAh, and record watt-hours and nominal voltage if published. Do not compare a cell-level rating with a different device’s system-level rating without checking the measurement basis.
- Find manufacturer runtime claims. Record whether each claim concerns local video, streamed video, web browsing, talk time or another workload. Keep “up to” language and the test conditions attached to the number.
- Prefer identical workloads. A local-video result is not directly comparable with a streamed-video result. Match the same video file or service, resolution, brightness, volume, refresh rate, network connection and software version whenever possible.
- Check independent tests for matching methods. A test is useful only when its workload and settings are comparable. A longer result from a dimmer display or a different network does not prove that the battery itself is better.
- Account for the hardware around the battery. Compare screen size and refresh rate, processor class, camera use, modem generation, cooling design and software features. These determine average power draw.
- Check battery age and health. A used phone with a larger original rating may deliver less usable capacity than a newer phone with a smaller rating if its cell has degraded substantially.
- Include charging and portability. A larger battery can reduce how often you need an outlet, but it may also add size, weight and charging time. Compare the phone’s supported charging power, charger availability and thermal behavior.
- Make the decision by workload. For light reading and messaging, either capacity may be sufficient. For navigation, gaming, camera work or long periods away from outlets, the larger capacity provides more reserve if the phone’s power draw is not proportionally higher.
How to estimate your own expected runtime
You can make a useful estimate without pretending that mAh converts directly to hours. First identify the phone’s battery energy in watt-hours, if the manufacturer provides it. If only charge capacity and nominal voltage are available, multiply them using the Department of Energy relationship, taking care that the units are consistent.

A controlled test might run the same video at the same brightness and network setting on both phones. A mixed-use estimate should record screen-on time, cellular and Wi-Fi conditions, background activity and the percentage of charge used. Divide usable watt-hours by average watts to estimate runtime, then treat the result as a range because power draw changes during use.
Do not apply a runtime measured on one phone to another phone solely because both show 5,000mAh or 10,000mAh. Capacity is one input; the device’s power demand and conversion efficiency are equally important.

More reserve between outlets
Under comparable use, the larger battery gives the phone more stored charge before it reaches its low-battery limit. This is most valuable for long navigation sessions, travel, field work, hotspot use, video recording or areas with unreliable access to power. The benefit is reserve, not a guaranteed number of extra hours.
Potentially larger or heavier hardware
Adding cells or using a larger battery assembly takes space and can increase weight. Manufacturers may use that space for a larger display, cameras, cooling or other components, so two phones with the same mAh rating can feel very different. A 10,000mAh phone is not automatically a better ergonomic choice if portability matters more than endurance.

A larger battery generally requires more energy and time to refill, subject to the phone’s charging limits and the charger used. Charging speed is a separate specification from capacity. A phone can have a large battery but charge slowly, or a smaller battery and reach a useful charge level quickly. Compare charging power, time-to-full claims and heat management rather than inferring charging performance from mAh.

Capacity is not a safety rating
mAh says how much charge a battery is designed to store, not whether a particular phone, charger or replacement cell is safe. Use the manufacturer’s compatible charger and battery-management system, and stop using a battery that is swollen, damaged or unusually hot.
Using a 10,000mAh power bank with a phone
A 10,000mAh USB-C power bank can provide useful emergency or travel reserve, but its printed capacity cannot be translated into a fixed number of phone recharges. The power bank’s cells and the phone’s battery operate at different voltages. Boost-conversion losses, cable losses, charging-management overhead and the phone’s own use while charging reduce the energy that reaches the phone.
For a meaningful estimate, compare watt-hours at the relevant voltage and allow for conversion efficiency. Even then, treat the result as approximate because charging rates and the phone’s state of charge change during a session. Do not promise “two full charges” merely because the power bank says 10,000mAh and the phone says 5,000mAh.

Common mistakes when reading battery specifications
- Turning mAh directly into hours: There is no universal mAh-to-hours conversion without the phone’s voltage, usable fraction and average power draw.
- Assuming all 10,000mAh ratings are equivalent: Voltage, test conditions and whether the number is measured at the cell or system level matter.
- Treating a manufacturer’s “up to” result as a guarantee: Playback and browsing claims describe specified tests, not every user’s mixed workload.
- Ignoring battery health: Original capacity and present capacity are different after chemical aging.
- Comparing unlike workloads: Local video, streamed video, gaming and standby can have very different power demands.
- Blaming capacity for every runtime difference: Display settings, signal strength, software and temperature can dominate the result.
- Using printed power-bank mAh as a recharge count: Voltage conversion and losses prevent a simple one-to-one comparison.
The practical verdict
A 10,000mAh battery is twice the rated charge capacity of a 5,000mAh battery when the ratings are comparable. In an otherwise identical phone under identical conditions, that can translate into about twice the runtime in an idealized calculation. Real phones are not identical experiments: their screens, chips, radios, software, temperatures, charging circuits and battery ages change the average power draw and usable capacity.
For a buying decision, use mAh as a first filter, then compare watt-hours or voltage, same-workload runtime tests, battery health, charging speed and device size. That approach answers how much longer a particular phone lasts without claiming that a capacity label alone can provide an exact number of hours.
