In the United States, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,899 for the same storage. That $100 difference is real, but it does not determine which phone is the better buy: weight, thickness, storage options, durability, multitasking, charging, regional pricing and release timing can change the value substantially.

The US list-price comparison

The headline prices compare only the entry configurations. The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 with 256GB, and the Galaxy Z Fold8 costs $1,899 with 256GB, according to Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison. Both figures are US list prices before sales tax, carrier offers, trade-in credits, financing costs or temporary discounts.

Phone US starting price Starting storage Available storage tiers cited
iPhone Duo $1,999 256GB 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB
Galaxy Z Fold8 $1,899 256GB 256GB, higher tiers up to 1TB

The Duo’s $100 premium is therefore the entry-level gap, not a universal difference across configurations. If you need 1TB, the two companies’ storage ceilings and pricing can produce a very different comparison; the cited material does not establish prices for each higher tier.

Why country and purchase timing matter

The US gap is narrower than the differences reported in some other markets. The comparison describes larger gaps in the United Kingdom and Australia, while a Korean report described a difference of one million won. Exact local prices, taxes and launch promotions vary, so the US figures should not be converted directly into another currency.

  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.

Timing also changes the decision. As of October 15, 2026, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is already on sale. Apple’s iPhone Duo pre-orders begin October 16, with general release scheduled for October 23, 2026. A Fold8 discount, trade-in bonus or carrier installment plan available before the Duo ships can make its effective price lower than the nominal $100 gap suggests.

  • Compare the final checkout price, including local tax and delivery.
  • Price carrier financing over the full term rather than comparing only the monthly payment.
  • Subtract trade-in credits only if you would actually use that offer and meet its condition requirements.
  • Check launch promotions and storage-specific discounts on the same day.
  • Consider resale value separately; it cannot be inferred from either manufacturer’s list price.

Portability: the Fold8 has the clearer hardware advantage

Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 grams, with a thickness of 4.5mm unfolded and 9.7mm folded. Tom’s Guide lists the iPhone Duo at 254 grams, 5.2mm open and 11.3mm closed. On those published figures, the Fold8 is 53 grams lighter and slimmer in both positions, a difference you can feel in a pocket or when holding it one-handed.

Specification iPhone Duo Galaxy Z Fold8 Source and qualification
Weight 254g 201g Tom’s Guide lists Duo weight; Samsung’s 2026 product page lists Fold8 weight
Unfolded thickness 5.2mm 4.5mm Tom’s Guide for Duo; Samsung product page for Fold8
Folded/closed thickness 11.3mm 9.7mm Tom’s Guide for Duo; Samsung product page for Fold8

The screen-size parity matters: the Fold8’s lighter, thinner chassis does not require giving up the cited 7.6-inch inner display. Cover-screen dimensions and hand comfort still deserve attention in person, because thickness and hinge shape affect reach as much as the scale reading.

Durability and hinge design

Apple says the iPhone Duo has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple’s newsroom describes a hinge made from more than 100 components: “The hinge is engineered from more than 100 components to precisely control opening and closing and support the centre of the display, delivering a smooth, satisfying feel.” That is a design claim, not a long-term durability test.

Samsung identifies an Armor FlexHinge on the Galaxy Z Fold8 and publishes its slim dimensions. The available specifications do not establish a controlled, head-to-head result for crease visibility, hinge lifespan or resistance to dust ingress. Treat the IP rating, materials and hinge architecture as design differences rather than proof that one phone will survive longer.

Productivity: two different interpretations of a foldable

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is the stronger choice if your priority is running several apps at once. The cited comparison says it can show up to four windows and supports floating windows. Samsung’s official FAQ says the Fold8 does not support the S Pen and does not support FlexMode, so buyers should not assume that every earlier Fold feature is present.

The iPhone Duo supports two Split View windows and works with Apple Pencil (USB-C). That can suit handwritten notes, document markup or a simpler two-app workflow, particularly for people already using Apple devices. Its MagSafe support also broadens the accessory ecosystem without requiring a separate magnetic case standard.

  • Choose Fold8 multitasking when four-window layouts or floating app windows are central to your work.
  • Choose Duo when Apple Pencil input, two-pane Split View or MagSafe accessories matter more than maximum window count.
  • Check the exact apps you use: foldable layouts and resizable windows depend on app support, not only on the phone’s hardware.

Charging, battery and cameras: specifications are not verdicts

Tom’s Guide’s published comparison gives the iPhone Duo a 4,883mAh battery, 60W wired charging and 25W wireless charging. It lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at 4,800mAh, 45W wired and 20W wireless. Those figures give Duo the higher charging ratings and a slightly larger stated battery, but they do not prove longer battery life.

  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

Battery endurance, camera quality, sustained performance, heat, crease behavior and hinge sturdiness require measured testing after the Duo launches. 9to5Mac specifically cautions that deeper comparisons in these areas need further testing. Do not pay the $100 premium on the assumption that Duo takes better photos or lasts longer until comparable results are available.

Accessories and ownership details

MagSafe is built into the Duo’s stated feature set, while Samsung says, “Galaxy Z Fold8 works best with official Samsung accessories, such as our range of magnet cases, if you want convenience and everyday protection.” Include the cost of a case, charger and stylus-related accessories when calculating ownership value. Neither phone’s list price necessarily includes those items.

What the reported sales figure does—and does not—show

Chosun, as reported by Android Central, described a 10% increase in Galaxy Z Fold8 sales after the iPhone Duo reveal. That is regional secondary reporting, not a global sales result or evidence that the Fold8 is objectively better value. It may reflect local promotions, availability or buyer timing.

Which phone makes more sense?

Pick the Galaxy Z Fold8 if

  • You want the lighter and thinner published hardware.
  • Your work depends on up to four windows or floating app windows.
  • You can buy it immediately or find a meaningful regional discount.
  • You do not need S Pen input or FlexMode.

Pick the iPhone Duo if

  • Apple Pencil (USB-C), MagSafe or IP68 protection is important.
  • You prefer Apple’s ecosystem and a two-window Split View workflow.
  • You need storage above the Fold8’s cited 1TB ceiling.
  • 60W wired and 25W wireless charging are worth the premium to you.

The practical answer is not “pay $100 more for the Duo” or “save $100 with the Fold8.” Compare the exact storage tier, local transaction price, accessories and your daily workflow. The Fold8 currently offers the more convincing portability and multitasking case; the Duo’s premium is easier to justify for its protection rating, Apple Pencil, MagSafe, charging specifications and higher storage ceiling.
