To make your iPhone last longer between charges, first check Settings > Battery for the apps, system activity, and conditions driving the drain. Then adjust the relevant settings: brightness, Auto-Lock, network use, or background activity. Low Power Mode can stretch a charge when you need it; if Battery Health says Service, consider a battery replacement instead of relying on tweaks.
1. Find what is using your battery
Open Settings > Battery. Review Daily Usage, App and System Activity, and any Suggestions or Insights shown above the chart. Compare recent use with the days shown, and look for patterns such as long screen time, background activity, frequent notifications, or poor cellular signal. Change settings based on what you find rather than switching features off indiscriminately.
If unusually fast drain began just after an iOS update or setting up the phone, background work may be contributing. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking Battery again. Daily Usage and some related features, including Adaptive Power, require iOS 26 or later; what appears depends on the phone and software version. 2. Lower screen brightness
A bright display can use more power. Reduce brightness to a comfortable level in Control Center or Settings > Display & Brightness. If Auto-Brightness is off, consider turning it on under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. The setting names or location can vary slightly by iOS version.

3. Set a shorter Auto-Lock time
If the screen often stays on while you are not using the phone, shorten the Auto-Lock interval in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Choose a timeout that suits how you use the phone; there is no single best interval for everyone. Apple may also surface Auto-Lock as a battery suggestion when it is disabled.
4. Prefer Wi-Fi and stronger signal when practical
Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than a mobile network, and both Wi-Fi and cellular connections use less energy when signal is strong. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi when it is available. In places where you know there will be no coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent the phone from continually seeking a network—but you will not receive cellular calls or messages while it is on.

5. Use 5G Auto on supported iPhones
On iPhone 12 models and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation), 5G Auto—also called Smart Data—can switch to LTE when 5G does not noticeably improve the experience. If available, find the option under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data (the wording can differ by carrier or iOS version). This is a way to balance network performance and power use, not a reason to assume 5G should always be disabled.

6. Turn on Low Power Mode when you need more time
Low Power Mode reduces some background and display activity to extend the current charge. It can limit features such as Background App Refresh and Mail fetch, dim the display, and slow some tasks. It is useful when you need to get through the day, but it does not restore capacity to an aging battery.
- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Low Power Mode switches off when the iPhone reaches 80% charge or higher. See Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions for device-specific details.
7. Check whether Adaptive Power is available
Adaptive Power is available on supported iPhones running iOS 26 or later. Find it at Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power. When enabled, it can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20% charge.

Check the setting on your phone rather than assuming it is available or enabled. Apple’s Adaptive Power guide lists the current behavior and eligibility.

8. Reduce background activity or notifications selectively
Use App and System Activity in Battery settings to identify an app whose background activity or notifications coincide with high drain. If you find a clear pattern, adjust that app’s background refresh, notification frequency, or other settings—or reduce its use. Disabling Background App Refresh or notifications for every app can remove useful updates and alerts without addressing the actual cause.
9. Protect the battery from excessive heat
Heat is a long-term battery-health issue as well as a comfort and safety concern. Apple gives an ideal ambient operating range of 16–22°C and advises avoiding use or charging above 35°C, which can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Cold can temporarily shorten battery life; performance generally returns as the phone warms back into its normal operating range. Avoid leaving the iPhone in hot environments, such as a sunlit car.

10. Optimize charging and check battery health
Reduce time spent fully charged
Optimized Battery Charging is enabled by default and is designed to reduce the time the iPhone spends fully charged. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Charging to choose a charge limit from 80% to 100%. At a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging remains available. A lower limit can help preserve long-term capacity, but it also means starting with less charge; choose according to whether daily runtime or battery longevity matters more to you.

Use Battery Health to decide whether service is needed
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the status says Service, Apple says to consider replacing the battery. Arrange service through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider; availability and options depend on location and device.
Lithium-ion batteries lose the amount of charge they can hold as they chemically age, which reduces battery life and peak performance. Apple’s battery health and performance guidance explains the relationship between aging and runtime.
