Our solar system is much bigger and stranger than a lineup of eight planets: it includes hundreds of moons, distant icy regions, and worlds with days that last longer than their years. These ten facts show how it formed, how its boundaries differ, and why familiar numbers need context.
1. The solar system includes far more than eight planets
NASA describes the solar system as the Sun, eight planets, five officially named dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and thousands of asteroids and comets. The five named dwarf planets are Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. The planets are the most prominent members, not the whole system. NASA’s solar system overview summarizes these categories.
2. It formed from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust
The solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago, according to NASA. A dense cloud of gas and dust collapsed and began spinning into a disk. The Sun formed at its center; material elsewhere in the disk gradually gathered into planets and smaller bodies. The different conditions across that young disk help explain why the inner planets are rocky while the outer planets are giants.

Rocky inner worlds and giant outer worlds
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are terrestrial planets with solid, rocky surfaces. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. The changing temperatures and available materials across the early disk shaped these distinct planet types.

3. The Sun is the only star—and it dwarfs the planets
There is one star in our solar system: the Sun. NASA describes it as about 100 times wider than Earth and about 10 times wider than Jupiter. That comparison is about width, not mass or volume. NASA’s Sun facts provide the scale comparison.
4. The solar system takes 230 million years to orbit the Milky Way
The Sun and the solar system travel around the center of the Milky Way at about 515,000 miles per hour (828,000 kilometers per hour), according to NASA. Even at that speed, one trip around the galaxy takes about 230 million years. This galactic orbit is on a vastly different scale from a planet’s orbit around the Sun.

5. The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud mark very different distant regions
Beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, a ring-shaped region containing icy bodies. Farther out, NASA describes the Oort Cloud as a predicted spherical shell, estimated to extend from about 5,000 to 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. One AU is roughly the average Sun–Earth distance, about 150 million kilometers.

6. There is no single simple “edge” of the solar system
The heliosphere is the region influenced by the solar wind; it is not the same as the full distance over which the Sun’s gravity matters. NASA places the termination shock, where the solar wind slows, at roughly 80–100 AU. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 crossed it in 2004 and 2007. NASA says Voyager 1 entered interstellar space in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018.
The Oort Cloud is much farther away than the termination shock. So an answer to “How far does the solar system extend?” depends on what boundary you mean: the reach of the solar wind, the populations of distant objects, or the Sun’s gravitational influence.

7. The solar system had more than eight planets in the old count
Pluto was long counted as the ninth planet. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union adopted a planet definition that reduced the recognized planet count from nine to eight. Under the current classification described by NASA, Pluto is a dwarf planet and one of five officially named dwarf planets.
This is a change in classification, not a change to Pluto itself. The term “dwarf planet” identifies a distinct category; it does not mean Pluto disappeared or stopped orbiting the Sun. NASA’s dwarf-planet page lists Pluto alongside Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris.

8. The solar system has more than 891 confirmed moons
Moon counts change as new objects are discovered and confirmed. NASA reported more than 891 confirmed moons across the solar system as of March 25, 2025: 421 officially recognized moons orbiting planets, including Pluto, and more than 470 confirmed moons orbiting other officially confirmed dwarf planets, asteroids, and trans-Neptunian objects. NASA’s page counted 274 confirmed moons for Saturn at that time. Treat these as dated counts, not permanent totals. NASA’s Moon facts page gives the as-of date and breakdown.
9. Jupiter’s day lasts just 9.9 hours
Jupiter has the shortest planetary rotation period in NASA’s fact sheet: 9.9 hours for one turn on its axis. That is its day in the rotational sense, not its year. Jupiter takes about 12 Earth years to complete one orbit around the Sun. NASA’s Jupiter facts distinguish its rotation from its orbital period.
10. A solar day on Venus is longer than its year
Venus takes about 224.7 Earth days to orbit the Sun, but its solar day—the time from one local noon to the next—lasts 2,802.0 hours, or about 116.8 Earth days? Actually, 2,802.0 hours equals about 116.8 days, shorter than 224.7 days. The apparent paradox comes from confusing the solar day with the rotation period: NASA’s fact sheet gives Venus a retrograde rotation period of −5,832.5 hours and a solar day of 2,802.0 hours. The negative sign denotes retrograde rotation. Under those figures, the solar day is not longer than Venus’s year.
