You can use your phone to find gig work, sell items, offer a service, or create content—but the phone is usually a tool, not a source of automatic income. Each option takes time, skills, an audience, transport, or something to sell, and none has a reliable universal earnings rate. Start by comparing the work, costs, eligibility rules, and payment terms before you commit.

Compare the 10 options before choosing

These are work categories, not endorsements of particular apps. Availability, onboarding, payment terms, and local rules vary. “Phone alone” means a smartphone can handle much of the work; it does not mean there are no other requirements.

Option What you do What you may need beyond a phone What to check
Sell unused items Photograph, list, price, and message buyers about things you own. Items to sell; packaging, shipping, or a safe local meetup. Fees, payment confirmation, shipping responsibilities, and seller protections.
Food or grocery delivery Accept and complete delivery requests through an app. Often a bike or vehicle, plus time and money for operating costs. Local eligibility, payment calculation, fees, expenses, and cancellation terms.
Rideshare driving Use an app to connect with passengers and provide rides. An eligible driver and vehicle, insurance and other applicable requirements, and vehicle costs. Location-specific eligibility, deductions, fees, and net income after expenses.
Local service gigs Find temporary jobs such as cleaning or home repair through a platform. Relevant ability, tools, transport, or supplies, depending on the job. Pay basis, expenses, fees, penalties, and cancellation rules.
Offer a skill-based service Find clients, communicate, schedule, and deliver suitable work. A marketable skill; some work needs a computer, specialized equipment, or other tools. Marketplace terms, client demand, fees, and what the deliverable actually requires.
Remote customer service or support Apply for and perform customer-service work, using the phone to coordinate or communicate where suitable. Some roles require a computer, headset, reliable internet, training, or equipment. Whether pay claims are realistic and whether required training or equipment costs money.
Create original videos or Shorts Make videos and, if eligible, earn through YouTube monetization features. Original ideas and content; an audience and policy eligibility for monetization. Feature eligibility, location availability, monetization rules, and rights to audio and visuals.
Use creator shopping features Promote eligible products through YouTube Shopping features. An eligible channel, relevant content, and an audience that may be interested. Current feature requirements, availability, and how any earnings are attributed.
Teach, tutor, or coach online Offer instruction or coaching and coordinate sessions by phone. Expertise, suitable teaching materials, and possibly another device or a quiet space. Client demand, platform terms, scheduling, and whether the phone supports the session format.
Surveys or research tasks Complete questionnaires or other research activities on a phone. Time and eligibility for individual studies. Actual reward and time required; never pay a deposit to unlock earnings.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes app-mediated work that includes delivery and local services, not just driving. In a 2022 policy statement, the FTC said 16% of Americans reported earning money through an online gig platform. That figure describes reported participation, not likely earnings for an individual.

Sell things you already own

This can be a practical starting point if you have items in usable condition. Your phone helps you take clear photos, write listings, set prices, answer questions, and arrange delivery or pickup. Your return depends on the items, buyer interest, platform fees, and time spent handling the sale; it is not recurring income unless you keep finding things to sell.

  • Check the platform’s fees, payment process, seller protections, and shipping or pickup rules before listing.
  • Use a payment method you can verify independently. A screenshot, email, or notification is not proof that money has settled in your account.
  • Do not accept an overpayment check and send a “refund” for the difference. A fake check can initially appear available before a bank discovers the problem.
  • Never give a buyer a one-time passcode or account-verification code. A buyer has no legitimate need for it.

The FTC’s online-selling scam guidance explains these payment and verification-code risks.

Understand the costs of app-based gigs

Delivery, rideshare driving, and local service jobs put the phone to work as a way to find and manage assignments. They may also require a vehicle, bike, tools, supplies, or travel. Before signing up, work out what you would keep after expenses rather than treating an app’s gross pay figure as take-home income.

Food or grocery delivery

Review how the platform calculates each payment, when and how it pays, and whether tips, bonuses, or other amounts are conditional. Account for fuel or other transport costs, maintenance, insurance, parking, and unpaid time where relevant. Check which vehicles are accepted and whether you meet local and platform requirements.

Rideshare driving

Driving requires an eligible driver and vehicle, and the rules depend on location and platform. Compare the full payment terms with vehicle expenses and any fees or deductions. The sources do not establish a universal net hourly rate, so an advertised or projected gross figure should not be treated as what you will take home.

Cleaning, repair, and other local services

A service platform may connect workers with temporary assignments such as cleaning or home repair. Consider whether you have the skills and equipment to do the work, as well as the travel and supply costs. Read the rules for cancellations, penalties, fees, and when payment is due before accepting a job.

The FTC’s 2022 gig-work policy statement gives examples of app-mediated work. Its January 2025 guide to evaluating gigs advises workers to check how pay is calculated, along with expenses, fees, penalties, and cancellation terms.

Sell a skill or offer instruction

Skill-based services

Writing, design, translation, consulting, and other services can be found and coordinated on a phone, but the work itself may require specialized skills or tools beyond a smartphone. Define what you can deliver, how long it takes, and what equipment it needs before setting a price. Check a marketplace’s current fees and terms directly; the available evidence does not establish which services are in demand or which marketplaces offer the best terms.

Tutoring, teaching, or coaching

A phone can help with scheduling, messages, and some remote sessions. The option is most plausible when you have a subject or skill others want to learn and a format that works on a small screen. Account for preparation, follow-up, and any need for a computer, teaching materials, or a quiet space. Specific marketplace terms and likely demand are not established here, so do not assume that signing up will bring clients.

Look for legitimate remote support work

Customer-service and support jobs can be found using a phone, but doing the job may require a computer, headset, reliable internet, or a dedicated workspace. Read the role and pay terms carefully, and ask what equipment and training are required before paying anything. The FTC’s enforcement record includes a settlement concerning claims about a work opportunity that involved required equipment and training; it is a reminder to scrutinize advertised earnings and up-front costs, not verification of any particular job offer.

Be skeptical of claims that workers commonly earn a specific amount unless the claim explains who earns it, under what conditions, and what costs are excluded. The FTC has also brought cases involving earnings representations in business-opportunity schemes. A job listing or recruiter’s promise is not evidence of typical results.

Create videos and use creator shopping features

YouTube lists several monetization routes for eligible creators: advertising revenue, Shopping, YouTube Premium revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. These features are not automatically available to every channel. Requirements differ by feature and location, and posting a video or product link alone does not guarantee income.

Make original content you have rights to use

YouTube’s rules require content to comply with monetization policies. You also need the necessary commercial-use rights to the video, audio, images, and other material you include. Using another creator’s work or music without the relevant rights can jeopardize monetization. Check YouTube’s current monetization overview and commercial-use and content requirements; requirements and feature availability can change.

Consider Shopping only if it fits your content

YouTube Shopping can include products from your own store or other brands for eligible channels. It is a feature to investigate after checking current eligibility and availability, not a shortcut to earnings. A smartphone tripod is an optional aid for recording steady footage; YouTube does not require one.

Treat surveys and app tasks cautiously

Surveys and research tasks are often described as phone-friendly, but available evidence does not establish typical compensation, reputable providers, or availability. Before starting, compare the stated reward with the time involved and check how rewards can be redeemed. Do not pay a fee or deposit to unlock earnings.

Watch for unsolicited messages offering easy app tasks, vague job descriptions, a balance that grows inside an unfamiliar app, and a demand for cryptocurrency or another deposit to withdraw supposed earnings. That pattern matches the FTC’s description of task scams. Its rule is direct: “Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job.” Read the FTC’s task-scam guidance before responding to such an offer.

Keep records and check your tax rules

For readers in the United States, the IRS says income is generally taxable whether or not a Form 1099-K arrives, unless tax law excludes it. A 1099-K reports payment transactions; it is not a calculation of profit and does not account for all fees, refunds, shipping, credits, or discounts. Keep records of income and relevant expenses, and consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances. The IRS Form 1099-K FAQ is U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should check their own tax authority.
