Super Mario Galaxy is the greatest Nintendo Wii game overall. Its 97/100 critic score, inventive gravity-based worlds and purposeful pointer controls make it the strongest all-round package. The rest of this ranking balances critical reception, Wii-control design, replayability, multiplayer value and historical importance rather than sales alone.

How these Wii games were ranked

“Greatest” is broader than “best-selling.” Each game below is judged on five questions: how well it was received, whether it makes meaningful use of the Wii Remote and pointer, how much replay value it offers, whether it works socially, and how important it was to the Wii library. That is why this list includes platformers, adventure games, racing, fighting, sports and first-person action.

The 10 greatest Nintendo Wii games

1. Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy is the clearest answer to “What is the best Wii game?” Metacritic records a 97/100 critic score from 73 reviews for the Wii release, placing it among the console’s most acclaimed games. Its small planetoids and shifting gravity turn movement into a constant series of surprises, while pointer and motion input support the platforming instead of feeling bolted on.

It is also unusually welcoming: newcomers can grasp the basic controls quickly, yet the level design keeps offering harder routes and new techniques. Galaxy combines the Wii’s technical ambition, imagination and accessibility better than any other single title.

2. Super Mario Galaxy 2

Galaxy 2 keeps the original’s gravity-hopping foundation but builds a separate campaign around new galaxies and more challenge-focused level design. It is not merely an expansion; it is a distinct sequel with its own progression and ideas. GamesRadar+ wrote in 2026 that it “improves over the original in every way” and called it one of the best Mario games ever made.

Choose it when you want the Wii’s highest-end 3D platforming and a tougher follow-up. Players who prefer a gentler introduction should start with the first Galaxy.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess is the Wii’s defining large-scale action adventure. Its dungeons, combat, exploration and darker tone give it a very different appeal from Mario’s compact platforming stages. The Wii edition was a launch-era prestige release and remains one of the system’s strongest single-player journeys.

The motion controls are less central to the game’s identity than Galaxy’s pointer mechanics, but the adventure’s breadth, atmosphere and sense of discovery make it essential for anyone asking which Wii games are still worth buying.

  • Unleashing new moves as you shake the controller and even point at and drag items with the pointer.
  • Perform mind-bending, low-gravity jumps across wild alien terrain as they experience platforming for a new generation
  • Multiplayer features for two gamers playing together

4. Wii Sports

Wii Sports is the clearest expression of Nintendo’s mass-market idea: short, instantly legible motion sports that mixed-skill groups can play almost immediately. Its activities communicate what the Wii Remote does without a tutorial-heavy barrier, so experienced players and first-time visitors can share the same room.

Nintendo’s official Wii software data makes Wii Sports central to the platform’s commercial story. It is less a traditional campaign than a social system, which is precisely why it remains one of the must-have Wii games.

5. Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii is the most durable local-multiplayer racing recommendation on the console. Steering-wheel controls make the basic idea accessible, while item-driven races keep every match unpredictable. A broad character roster and the quick restart loop encourage “one more race” sessions long after the single-player content is familiar.

It is the best choice here for competitive living-room play: easier to pick up than a simulation racer and deep enough to support repeated gatherings.

6. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

Resident Evil 4 was already a landmark action game, but the Wii Edition is notable because pointer aiming and motion controls improve the way encounters feel. The reticle makes targeting direct and responsive, while the Wii format gives the third-party release a distinct identity rather than a simple port.

GamesRadar+ described the 2007 Wii version as “arguably the best of the lot” among the game’s many ports. Pick it for motion-enhanced third-party action and a more demanding solo experience than the party-focused games above.

7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a content-rich crossover fighter built for local multiplayer. Its large roster and multiple ways to play made it a core Wii party game, while the straightforward objective—knock opponents away—lets less experienced players participate quickly.

Metacritic’s all-time Wii index places Brawl among the platform’s highly rated releases. It belongs on a collection aimed at competitive friends, especially when several players want a match that can be understood in seconds but revisited for years.

8. Wii Sports Resort

Wii Sports Resort refines the original motion-sports formula with Wii MotionPlus and a broader activity set. The improved motion fidelity makes actions feel more deliberate, and the variety gives groups more reasons to rotate the controller.

It is the best “show someone what the Wii does” follow-up to Wii Sports. Buy it when the appeal is shared physical play rather than a long narrative campaign.

9. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

New Super Mario Bros. Wii brings classic side-scrolling Mario into four-player cooperative play. The group dynamics create joyful chaos: helping one another, colliding, and recovering from mistakes are as important to the experience as clearing a level.

Its single-player design is familiar, but that is not the main reason it ranks here. For families and parties, the cooperative format makes it a better recommendation than its solo profile alone would suggest.

10. Metroid Prime Trilogy

Metroid Prime Trilogy packages three landmark first-person adventures with Wii pointer controls and widescreen presentation. The result is the list’s biggest long-form exploration commitment and one of its strongest value propositions for a solo player.

It is less immediately social than Wii Sports, Mario Kart or Brawl, but the combined scope, atmospheric exploration and control conversion give it a place among the ten greatest Wii games.

Are these Wii games still worth buying?

Yes, but most copies are now used-market purchases. Before paying, compare more than the title: verify the game’s region, inspect the disc for damage, check whether the original case and manual are included, and review the seller’s ratings and return policy. A complete, well-kept copy can be preferable to a cheaper disc-only listing, particularly for games you expect to keep.

For a focused search, use exact product phrases such as “Super Mario Galaxy Wii,” “Mario Kart Wii,” “Zelda Twilight Princess Wii” or “Metroid Prime Trilogy Wii.” Listings, prices and availability change, so treat every offer as a condition-and-seller comparison rather than a fixed market value.

Which game should you start with?

Start with Super Mario Galaxy if you want one title that represents the Wii at its most inventive and critically acclaimed. Choose Wii Sports or Mario Kart Wii for friends, Twilight Princess for a substantial adventure, and Metroid Prime Trilogy for three extended exploration campaigns. Together, these games explain why the Wii’s library cannot be reduced to one genre or one style of play.
