For the 2025–26 season, former NBA players are working as game analysts, color commentators and studio analysts across ESPN/ABC, NBC Sports and Prime Video, as well as on regional broadcasts. The ten names below are ranked editorially—not by an official league or network score—using current role visibility, range of broadcast work, tenure and documented NBA résumé.

How this list is ranked

A game analyst or color commentator explains action during a live broadcast; a studio analyst breaks down games before or after they happen. Those roles are not interchangeable, so the list identifies each person’s documented assignment rather than treating every television appearance as play-by-play commentary. The order weighs prominence and breadth of work alongside broadcast continuity and playing experience. It is an editorial judgment, not a measured ranking of analytical quality or viewer preference.

Ten former NBA players who became commentators

1. Richard Jefferson

Jefferson is a prominent ESPN game analyst, with a documented 17-season NBA career. ESPN’s 2025–26 announcement placed him on its lead team for major games and noted his first NBA Finals analyst assignment in 2025. That combination of a substantial national game role and established experience puts him first here. ESPN’s Richard Jefferson biography and 2025–26 commentary-team announcement.

2. Grant Hill

Hill is an NBC Sports NBA game analyst for the 2025–26 coverage. NBC Sports says he played 18 NBA seasons and has also worked in broadcasting for TNT Sports and CBS college basketball. His national game work and experience across more than one broadcast setting make him one of the most established names on this list. NBC Sports’ Grant Hill biography.

3. Reggie Miller

Miller is an NBC Sports game analyst for its 2025–26 NBA coverage. His inclusion reflects the prominence of that announced national assignment and his documented career as an NBA player; the announcement establishes his role, not a claim that he is objectively better than the other analysts here. NBCUniversal’s 2025–26 NBA commentator announcement.

4. Jamal Crawford

Crawford joined NBC Sports as a game analyst in January 2025 for its 2025–26 NBA coverage, with the network saying he would work one or more games per week. Before that, he worked as a studio and game analyst for TNT and NBA TV. NBC Sports also records his 20-year playing career, from 2000 to 2020. His previous work in both studio and live-game formats gives his profile unusual breadth. NBC Sports’ Jamal Crawford biography.

5. Steve Nash

Nash is among the Hall of Fame players named in Prime Video’s announcement of its 2025–26 NBA coverage. The announcement establishes his place in the coverage, but does not specify a more particular assignment in the cited material; this entry therefore does not label him a game analyst or studio analyst. 6. Dwyane Wade

Wade, also a Hall of Fame player, was named among the contributors to Prime Video’s 2025–26 NBA coverage. As with Nash, the announcement does not specify his exact on-air role, so his inclusion is limited to the confirmed coverage connection rather than a more precise job title. 7. Brent Barry

Prime Video named Barry an analyst for its 2025–26 NBA coverage. He played 14 NBA seasons, won two championships and previously worked in broadcasting for Turner Sports. That documented combination of playing experience and prior broadcast work supports his place among the most experienced former players in the group. NBA.com’s Prime Video coverage announcement.

8. Dell Curry

Curry is an analyst in Prime Video’s 2025–26 NBA coverage and has served as a Charlotte Hornets color commentator since 2009, according to the NBA’s announcement. His 16-year playing career and long-running regional broadcast role make him a clear example of how former players work beyond national studio shows. NBA.com’s Prime Video coverage announcement.

9. Vince Carter

Carter was announced as a studio analyst for NBC Sports’ NBA coverage. That is a distinct role from calling a live game: studio analysts discuss matchups and results around the broadcast. NBCUniversal’s announcement confirms the assignment but does not provide a detailed account of his broadcast tenure, so this entry is based on the role itself rather than an unsupported comparison of on-air ability. 10. Danny Green

Green has worked as an analyst and color commentator for ESPN and Turner Sports, NBA.com reported in January 2026. In an interview published January 22, he described his approach as giving fans an inside perspective on the locker room and the court. That is Green’s stated aim, not proof that every former player brings the same perspective or that audiences rate his commentary a particular way. The article also notes that he is still developing as a broadcaster. He won three NBA championships during a 15-year NBA career. NBA.com’s interview with Danny Green.

What kinds of commentary jobs do former players have?

  • Game analyst: Offers tactical and player-focused explanation during live games. Jefferson, Hill, Miller and Crawford have documented national game-analyst assignments for ESPN or NBC Sports in the 2025–26 season.
  • Color commentator: Adds analysis alongside the play-by-play announcer. Curry’s regional role with the Hornets is a documented example; Green has also worked in this capacity.
  • Studio analyst: Breaks down matchups, news and results outside the live call. Carter’s announced NBC Sports role is specifically a studio assignment; Crawford has previous studio experience.
  • Analyst with an unspecified assignment: A network or platform announcement may identify someone as part of coverage without naming a precise on-air job. Prime Video’s announcement names Nash and Wade among its contributors but does not specify their exact roles in the cited material.

Where former players appear in 2025–26

The cited announcements show former players working across ESPN/ABC, NBC Sports and Prime Video, alongside regional coverage such as Curry’s Hornets role. These are season-specific assignments: broadcast rosters can change, and an announcement for 2025–26 should not be read as a guarantee of future appearances or every game assignment.
