Before you message, pay, ship, or meet someone from Facebook Marketplace, check the item, the other person’s claims, and the transaction terms. These 10 practical checks help buyers spot unanswered questions and help sellers avoid common payment scams. Marketplace features and protections vary by location and transaction, so confirm what applies in the listing and checkout flow you are using.
1. Check photos and condition before you message
Read the full description, not just the headline. Look for several photos of the actual item that show its condition from different angles. Stock photos alone do not establish that the seller has the item. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking photos and asking for more information when the listing leaves important details unclear.
- Ask about specific defects, wear, or missing parts.
- For an electronic device, ask what is included and whether it can be powered on or inspected.
- Request a current photo if you cannot tell whether the listing shows the actual item.
2. Read seller information and ratings with care
Review the seller’s profile and any Marketplace ratings, but treat them as clues rather than proof. Meta says ratings become public after a seller receives five or more ratings. Meta also says it does not verify that reviewers bought or used the item or service. A high rating is not a guarantee, and a new profile is not, by itself, proof of a scam. 3. Compare the price with the item’s condition
Consider price alongside the item’s condition, included accessories, and likely delivery or shipping cost. A price far below what you expect for an expensive item is a reason to investigate; it does not prove the listing is fraudulent. Ask what explains the price, whether anything is damaged or missing, and whether you can inspect the item before completing the purchase.

4. Read the transaction terms before agreeing
Do not assume every Marketplace transaction has the same payment, delivery, return, refund, or complaint process. Before committing, read the terms displayed for the specific listing and transaction. Note any eligibility rules and deadlines for requesting help. The FTC advises shoppers to understand the marketplace’s policies before buying.
5. Avoid payment methods that are hard to recover
The FTC warns against paying marketplace sellers with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency because recovering the money can be difficult. Do not assume that a person-to-person transfer provides the same recourse as a purchase processed through an eligible checkout flow. Meta’s checkout education also distinguishes eligible checkout purchases from other transaction types. Check the terms shown for your transaction before paying.

6. Verify incoming payment yourself before handing over the item
If you are selling, do not rely on a screenshot, email, or buyer’s message saying payment was sent. Open the payment service or account independently and confirm that the funds arrived before you hand over or ship the item. The FTC’s online selling scam guidance describes fake payment notices, fake checks, and overpayment schemes. If a buyer claims to have overpaid and asks you to return part of the money, do not send a refund based on that claim.

Save the listing details, messages, written answers, agreed price, pickup or delivery arrangements, and relevant payment records. If a dispute or scam report becomes necessary, those records can help show what was offered and what both parties agreed to. The FTC recommends keeping copies of messages and written answers when buying online; see its online shopping guidance.

8. Never share a verification code for an ordinary sale
A buyer or seller should not need a code sent to your phone to complete an ordinary item sale. Requests for a Google Voice verification code are a documented online-selling scam pattern in the FTC’s scam guidance. Treat a request for any one-time login or verification code as a reason to stop the conversation. Do not send the code.
9. Plan local meetups before you leave
Check Meta’s current Marketplace safety guidance for in-person meeting advice and any meetup-planning feature available to you. Share the plan with someone you trust, including where and when you intend to meet. Choose a location and arrangement that make sense for the item and your circumstances; do not let pressure to hurry override a plan you consider safe.

10. Confirm delivery and protection for this exact transaction
Shipping and delivery options depend on location, and delivery is not available everywhere. Meta says eligible purchases made through Facebook checkout may qualify for Purchase Protection, while local-pickup person-to-person transactions do not. Eligibility and terms matter, and features can vary by location and transaction type. Check what the live listing and checkout flow actually offer rather than assuming that shipping, delivery, or protection is available.
