Gboard can do far more than insert letters. On an Android phone or tablet, you can slide the space bar to reposition the cursor, switch languages without changing Android’s menus, translate as you type, dictate and edit by voice, handwrite with a finger, and tune suggestions to your habits. The ten techniques below use Gboard’s current menus and gestures; update Gboard first, because labels and feature placement can differ by version and device.
Open Settings in Gboard by tapping the gear on the keyboard (or open your phone’s Settings and search for “Gboard”). Google documents Android 7.0 and later for some keyboard setup instructions, while individual features may require a newer Gboard build, a particular language, or a supported device. If a label is not where described, use Gboard’s settings search or the current feature menu rather than assuming your phone lacks the capability.
1. Move the cursor with the space bar
Editing a single character is easier when you do not have to tap precisely between two tiny letters. While the keyboard is open, place a finger on the space bar and swipe left or right. The insertion point follows your finger through the text, allowing you to stop exactly before or after the character you need. This works in ordinary text fields and is especially useful for correcting names, email addresses, and long messages.

- Tap inside the text field so Gboard appears.
- Touch and hold the space bar.
- Slide horizontally until the cursor reaches the desired position, then lift your finger.
Use a short, controlled swipe for nearby characters and repeat the gesture for a larger move. The gesture controls the cursor; it does not select text. To select or replace a passage, use your app’s normal text-selection handles after positioning the cursor.

Google describes this and other keyboard gestures in Gboard’s “Use your keyboard” guide. Exact behavior can vary with the app receiving the text.
2. Switch languages without changing Android’s system language
You can add a bilingual or multilingual layout to Gboard while leaving Android’s interface language untouched. That means menus, notifications, and other apps remain in the system language; only the keyboard’s active dictionary and layout change.
Add and switch a keyboard
- Open Gboard settings and tap Languages.
- Tap Add keyboard, choose a language, and select a layout if Gboard offers several.
- With the keyboard open in any app, touch and hold the space bar.
- Select the language you want to use. Gboard changes the active layout and suggestions immediately.
Some language pairs offer multilingual typing, while others work best when you switch explicitly. If you cannot find a language, check whether your current Gboard version supports it and whether the download completed. Google’s language and switching instructions are in Use your keyboard.
3. Glide-type words instead of tapping every letter
Glide typing lets you enter a word by sliding one finger across its letters without lifting between characters. Gboard interprets the path and places the most likely word in the text field. It is useful when one-handed typing is more comfortable or when repeatedly tapping individual keys feels cumbersome. Google documents the setting but does not claim a universal speed increase, so treat it as a preference rather than a guaranteed performance boost.
Turn it on
- Open Gboard settings and tap Glide typing (on some versions it appears under Preferences).
- Enable Enable glide typing.
- Return to a text field and drag from the first letter of a word through each following letter.
- Lift your finger after the final letter; begin the next word with another glide.
Accuracy depends on the dictionary, language, and the shape of your swipe. For names, technical terms, or uncommon words, tap normally or choose a correction from the suggestion strip. Google lists Glide typing among the setup options in Set up Gboard.

4. Insert emoji and GIFs from the keyboard
You do not need to leave a conversation to find a reaction image or animated GIF. Gboard’s emoji control opens both the emoji picker and, where supported, a GIF search tab. Selecting an item inserts it directly into the current text field or message composer.
Insert an item
- Tap the emoji icon on Gboard. If it is hidden, tap the comma or the four-square features button to reveal it.
- Choose an emoji category, or tap GIF to search by a word or phrase.
- Tap the emoji or GIF you want. Gboard sends it to the app’s text field; tap the app’s send button if the app does not send automatically.
GIF availability and search results are controlled by the receiving app and your connection. In work or school apps that restrict animated media, the GIF tab may be absent or an item may be converted to a link.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Translate while you compose
Gboard can translate a draft before you send it, so you can write in a familiar language and place the translated version in the conversation. The translation appears as a preview; it is not sent until you accept it and use the app’s send control.
Translate a message
- Open Gboard’s feature menu by tapping the four-square icon or the arrow at the left of the suggestion strip.
- Tap Translate.
- Choose the source language and the destination language.
- Type in the source-language box. Gboard displays a translated preview.
- Tap the preview to insert it into the active text field, then review and send it.
Translation quality can vary with slang, names, punctuation, and specialized terminology. Keep the source and destination selections visible while checking a sensitive message, and verify the wording in the conversation before sending. The controls are documented in Google’s “Translate as you type” help page. Supported languages and the exact menu placement can change as Gboard is updated.
6. Dictate text and use voice controls
Tap Gboard’s microphone to speak instead of typing. Standard voice typing converts speech into text in the active field, with punctuation commands and available languages determined by Google’s support for your device and language.

Standard voice typing
- Place the cursor in a text field and tap the microphone icon.
- Wait for the listening indicator, then speak naturally.
- Say punctuation when your language supports spoken punctuation, such as “comma” or “question mark.”
- Tap the microphone again or pause according to the on-screen control to stop.
Allow microphone permission when Android asks. No single list of punctuation phrases works for every language, so consult the language-specific behavior described in Type with your voice.

Google’s advanced voice-typing documentation limits the feature to Pixel 6 or later. When available, it can add automatic punctuation, voice editing commands, emoji insertion, and continued typing while the microphone remains active. The cited support page lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish; it does not establish support for every regional variant or every Android phone.
| Capability | Standard Gboard voice typing | Advanced Pixel voice typing |
|---|---|---|
| Device requirement | Supported Android device with Gboard and microphone access | Pixel 6 or newer in Google’s documented feature set |

| Language note | Varies by language and region | English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish in the cited documentation |
| While listening | Behavior depends on the standard voice-typing mode | Continued typing is documented as a supported capability |
Read Use advanced voice typing features before troubleshooting: a non-Pixel device or an unsupported language may correctly provide standard dictation but not the advanced controls.
7. Try Gboard’s writing tools when your device supports them
Gboard’s writing-tools menu can offer Proofread, Rephrase, Professional, Friendly, Emojify, Elaborate, and Shorten. These tools are optional and are not present on every phone. Google lists four prerequisites: a supported device, the latest Gboard version, Gboard set as the default keyboard, and a supported language.
Check for the tools
- Update Gboard from Google Play, then make sure it is the default keyboard in Android’s keyboard settings.
- Open a text field and tap the four-square features button.
- Look for Writing tools. Select a tool and follow the on-screen prompt to highlight or generate text.
- Review every suggestion before inserting it, particularly names, dates, technical details, and workplace messages.
If the menu is missing, first verify the four prerequisites rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Availability can also depend on account, region, language, and staged feature rollout. Google’s current requirements and tool descriptions are in Use writing tools with Gboard.

8. Handwrite with a finger or stylus
For characters that are difficult to locate on a standard layout, choose a handwriting layout and draw them in the input area. Gboard recognizes handwriting from a finger; a capacitive stylus is optional and may feel more precise for long passages or small screens. Handwriting is not offered for every language.
Enable a handwriting layout
- Open Gboard settings and tap Languages.
- Select the language you want to configure.
- Choose a layout that includes Handwriting, then tap Done.
- When typing, use the language/layout switch key (or hold the space bar) and select the handwriting keyboard.
- Write one character or a connected word in the panel; tap the recognized result or continue writing.
Recognition improves when strokes are large and clearly separated. If no handwriting layout appears, the selected language may not support it. Google’s setup steps and language caveat are in Use your keyboard.
9. Tune Gboard’s look, sound, and vibration
Small sensory changes can make a keyboard less distracting or easier to use in a noisy environment. Gboard lets you choose a theme, control key-press sounds, adjust vibration strength, and change emoji size.
Customize the keyboard
- Open Gboard settings and tap Theme to choose a color scheme or image and apply it.
- Return to settings and open Preferences.
- Use the sound controls to enable or disable key-press sound and set its volume.
- Use the vibration controls to enable key-press haptics and choose the strength when the option is available.
- Adjust the emoji-size option if your version exposes it in Preferences.
Android’s device-level vibration setting can override Gboard’s own choice. If haptics remain on or off unexpectedly, check the phone’s Sound & vibration settings as well as Gboard. See Change your keyboard theme, sound, or vibration for the current labels.
10. Control suggestions and corrections
The suggestion strip and automatic corrections are configurable, so you can decide whether Gboard proposes words, fixes common mistakes, or learns from your typing. This is useful when autocorrect changes names or specialist vocabulary too often.

Choose what Gboard suggests
- Open Gboard settings and tap Text correction.
- Review the available suggestion types and switch off any that you do not want.
- Enable the suggestion strip if you want word suggestions displayed above the keys.
- Test the changes in a text field and add unusual words to your personal dictionary when appropriate.
Some suggestion features have device- and language-specific limits. Google documents Smart Compose as US English only and restricted to specified messaging apps, so do not expect it in every language or editor. The exact correction switches can also change between Gboard releases; consult Get word suggestions and fix mistakes for the current list.
If a Gboard feature is missing or stops working
Feature availability is conditional, not a sign that your phone is defective. Work through these checks in order:
- Update Gboard, restart the phone, and reopen the text field.
- Confirm Gboard is enabled and selected as the default on-screen keyboard.
- Check that the language you selected supports the feature; handwriting, writing tools, advanced voice typing, and Smart Compose each have narrower language rules.
- Recheck Android permissions, especially microphone access for dictation.
- Open Gboard’s app settings and clear its cache if the keyboard is freezing or menus fail to load; clearing data resets learned words and preferences.
- If the keyboard is still unusable, switch temporarily to another enabled keyboard, then select Gboard again after troubleshooting.
Google’s troubleshooting guide covers crashes, missing keyboards, and unresponsive controls at Fix problems with Gboard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do these gestures work on Android tablets as well as phones?
Gboard is available on many Android tablets, and the same settings and gestures may appear, but layout, split-keyboard modes, app behavior, and feature availability vary by tablet model, Android release, language, and Gboard version. Update Gboard and check its current feature menu on the tablet.
Why does a translated or dictated sentence need to be reviewed before sending?
Gboard inserts a translation or speech-recognition result into the text field; it does not guarantee that names, punctuation, slang, or technical terms are correct. Read the inserted text in the destination app and edit it before tapping Send.
How can I get Gboard back after another keyboard becomes active?
Open Android’s keyboard settings, enable Gboard if necessary, and select it as the default on-screen keyboard. Then open any text field and verify that the Gboard microphone, language switch, and feature buttons appear.
