There is no currently verified 10-disc CD changer in the manufacturer and retailer material reviewed for this guide. The documented modern choices are the five-disc Yamaha CD-C603 and the six-disc Onkyo DX-C390. Both let you keep music playing while changing other discs, but they differ in USB file playback, programming, and digital outputs.

If you specifically need ten physical discs in one magazine or carousel, you are looking at used or vintage equipment rather than a confirmed current model. The practical buying decision today is usually between a five- or six-disc changer, provided its outputs match your receiver or amplifier.

What happened to 10-disc CD changers?

The phrase “10-disc CD changer” describes a real format, but it should not be treated as the specification of a current player without checking the exact model. A July 1989 Hi-Fi Stereo Review article discusses ten-disc magazine changers from Sony, Sanyo, and Yamaha, showing that the capacity existed historically (1989 review PDF). That search-result evidence is historical, not a current availability or reliability recommendation, and the PDF was not available for full verification during this review.

The contemporary manufacturer pages examined identify the Yamaha CD-C603 as a five-disc changer and the Onkyo DX-C390 as a six-disc changer. A buying guide dated August 26, 2026 also presents the Onkyo as a six-disc multi-disc player, not a ten-disc unit (Crutchfield’s 2026 CD-player guide). Retail listings, stock, regional versions, and support can change, so confirm those details for the exact seller and model before ordering.

Yamaha CD-C603: the five-disc choice with USB playback

Capacity and PlayXChange operation

The CD-C603 holds five discs. Its PlayXChange mechanism is designed for uninterrupted listening: Yamaha says, “PlayXChange allows you to change four CDs while the fifth keeps playing.” In practical terms, one disc remains in the playback position while the other four slots are accessible. This is useful for a long album session or a party playlist when you want to refresh most of the disc selection without stopping the current track.

PlayXChange is not a ten-disc system and does not mean that five additional discs are available outside the changer. The five-disc capacity is the total documented capacity.

USB formats and resolution limits

The front-panel USB function supports MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and FLAC files. Yamaha specifies WAV and FLAC playback up to 96 kHz/24-bit. The specification describes what the player accepts; it does not guarantee that every file with one of those extensions will play. Encoding errors, unusual metadata, unsupported sample rates above the stated limit, or a problematic USB drive can still cause a file to be skipped.

For a mixed library, check the actual file format before copying it to a drive. Lossless FLAC and WAV support is relevant if your library is stored in those formats, while MP3, WMA, and AAC cover common compressed files. The cited specification does not establish gapless playback, maximum USB storage size, folder-depth limits, or a particular file-system requirement, so consult the regional manual for those details.

Connections

The Yamaha provides RCA analog stereo and optical digital output. RCA is the straightforward choice when the receiver or integrated amplifier has a matching analog input. Optical is useful when the receiving component accepts TOSLINK and you want the digital connection to be handled by that component’s converter.

Neither output should be assumed to sound better in every system. The correct choice depends on the available input, cable length, receiver processing, and how your system is configured. The Yamaha page establishes the output types, not a universal sonic advantage for one connection.

Onkyo DX-C390: six discs, extensive programming, and two digital outputs

Six-disc carousel and in-play loading

The DX-C390 is a six-disc carousel changer. Onkyo describes its convenience features this way: “Others looking for convenience will thrill at the sight of 6-disc capability, 6 repeat modes, 40 track programming—and no worries about interruptions to your music, with the ability to change 5 discs while the last one is still playing.” This is promotional copy from the manufacturer, but it clearly identifies the capacity and operating concept.

With five slots available for replacement while one disc plays, the Onkyo offers one more disc of capacity than the Yamaha. You still need to account for the physical carousel’s loading procedure and any restrictions in the manual; do not force a tray or attempt to remove the playing disc.

Programming and repeat modes

The player documents 40-track programming. That lets you build a sequence from the loaded discs instead of listening in disc order, subject to the track-selection rules in the manual. Six repeat modes are also documented. The cited page does not list every mode by name, so verify whether the regional remote and manual identify them as single-track, disc, all-disc, or program repeats before relying on a particular behavior.

The 40-track figure is a programmed-track limit, not a claim about the number of tracks the carousel can hold in total. It also does not establish random-play behavior or whether a program survives power-off.

Analog, optical, and coaxial outputs

The DX-C390 has fixed analog output plus optical and coaxial digital outputs. The extra coaxial option can solve a compatibility problem when an amplifier has a coaxial digital input but no optical input. “Fixed analog” means the player’s analog output is intended to feed a line-level input; it is not a variable preamp output for directly controlling a power amplifier.

Match one output on the player to one input on the receiver. Optical and coaxial are alternative digital paths, not connections that should be joined together. If you use analog RCA, select an unused line input such as CD or AUX on the receiver and avoid a phono input unless the equipment documentation explicitly permits it.

This table compares documented capabilities, not sound quality. No controlled listening test or independent measurement in the available material proves that either player sounds better than the other.

How to connect a multi-disc changer to your system

Before unpacking the player, identify the receiver or amplifier input you intend to use. The player’s output and the receiving input must be the same connection family: analog RCA to an analog line input, optical to optical, or coaxial digital to coaxial digital.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the receiver and changer. This reduces the chance of a loud transient while you connect cables.
  2. Choose the connection. Use RCA when the receiver has only analog line inputs. Use optical or coaxial when both components have matching digital sockets.
  3. Connect the cable firmly. For RCA, match left and right channels. For optical, remove protective caps and insert the plug until it seats. For coaxial digital, use the receiver’s digital coax input rather than a phono input.
  4. Power on and select the corresponding receiver input. The input label may be CD, AUX, Digital 1, Optical, or another name assigned by the receiver.
  5. Load one disc and start playback. Confirm that the track counter advances and that both left and right channels are audible at a low volume.
  6. Test every loaded position. Stop playback before changing discs unless the player’s documented carousel feature permits changing the non-playing slots. Never push the tray or carousel by hand.
  7. Set the receiver’s input mode if necessary. Some receivers offer Auto, Analog, Optical, or Coaxial modes. Choose the mode corresponding to the cable you installed.

If you connect both analog and digital cables, label which input you are testing. Otherwise, the receiver may silently select the other path and make troubleshooting confusing.

Understanding sound quality claims

Both manufacturers use positive language about their products’ audio performance, but those statements are manufacturer claims. The available material contains no controlled frequency-response measurements, distortion comparison, level-matched listening test, or independent ranking. It is therefore not supportable to call one model the best-sounding changer on this evidence.

In a working system, audible results depend on the disc or file, the player’s digital-to-analog conversion when using analog output, the receiver or amplifier, speakers, room acoustics, volume matching, and the connection selected. A digital cable does not automatically improve sound, and a more expensive cable is not established here as a performance upgrade.

Buying a current unit: checks that matter more than the disc count

Confirm the exact model and region

Product pages can change, and regional versions may use different manuals, power requirements, warranty terms, or output labeling. Match the model number on the carton and rear panel to the manufacturer’s page. Check mains voltage and plug type before importing equipment.

Verify condition and support

For a new listing, confirm that the seller has current stock, a return period, and a stated warranty. For used equipment, ask whether every carousel position reads a disc, whether the tray opens smoothly, whether the remote is included, and whether the unit has been stored in a dry, smoke-free environment. A listing that says “powers on” does not prove that the optical pickup, loading motor, display, and all outputs work.

Check the outputs against your amplifier

Count the available inputs on the receiver before buying. A player with optical output is not useful if the receiver has only analog line inputs unless you add a compatible converter. Conversely, a player with RCA output can connect directly to a conventional line input even when the receiver has no digital input.

Plan for media compatibility

Audio CDs are the common denominator documented for these changer designs. The Yamaha’s USB formats are specifically listed, but the cited information does not promise support for every USB filesystem, tag type, or high-resolution format beyond the stated WAV/FLAC limit. If your library depends on a particular codec, sample rate, or large drive, verify it in the manual or obtain a return option.

What to do if you really need ten slots

A true ten-disc requirement narrows the search to vintage or used equipment unless a manufacturer provides a current ten-disc model and manual. Start with the exact model number, not a seller’s generic “10-disc” title. Then verify the magazine or carousel design, disc diameter support, loading method, power voltage, remote availability, and service documentation.

  • Ask for a complete loading demonstration. The seller should show every slot accepting and ejecting a disc.
  • Check playback across the magazine. A unit may read the first position while failing to index later positions because of worn belts, gears, or sensors.
  • Look for parts support. Belts, loading gears, optical pickups, and proprietary magazines can be difficult to source.
  • Confirm the output standard. Older units may have only fixed analog RCA output, while your receiver may require a digital connection.
  • Budget for restoration. A low purchase price can be offset by cleaning, belt replacement, alignment, shipping damage, or technician labor.

The 1989 review establishes that ten-disc changers existed; it does not establish that a particular vintage model is safe to buy today. Treat any specific legacy recommendation as conditional on a verified manual and an inspected, working example.

Troubleshooting common problems

No sound from either channel

Confirm that the receiver is on the input used by the changer. For digital connections, select the matching optical or coaxial input mode. For RCA, check that the red and white plugs are connected to a line input rather than a phono input. Start playback and verify that the player’s counter is moving; a paused or stopped player will produce silence regardless of the cable.

Only one channel works

Swap the left and right RCA plugs at the receiver. If the silent channel changes sides, the cable or receiver input is suspect. If it stays on the same speaker, check the speaker wire, balance control, and amplifier channel. Optical and coaxial connections carry both stereo channels digitally, so a one-channel fault there points to receiver settings or downstream equipment rather than an individual RCA plug.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical or coaxial connection shows no signal

Make sure the cable is connected to an output on the changer and an input on the receiver. Remove the optical dust caps, select the correct digital input, and test with a standard audio CD. If the receiver offers Auto, PCM, or another digital mode, follow its manual; the cited product pages do not specify every receiver’s format-setting requirements.

A USB file will not play on the Yamaha

Check that the file is MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, or FLAC and that WAV or FLAC does not exceed Yamaha’s specified 96 kHz/24-bit limit. Try a different file and a simpler USB drive to separate a file-encoding problem from a drive or filesystem limitation. The manufacturer’s page does not establish universal support for every drive size or folder structure.

The changer skips or refuses a disc

Inspect the disc for fingerprints, scratches, labels, or warping and try a known-good audio CD. If multiple discs fail in the same carousel position, the mechanism or optical pickup may need service. Do not use force to rotate a carousel. On used equipment, ask the seller to demonstrate all positions before purchase.

Hum or buzzing through the speakers

With an analog RCA connection, route the audio cable away from power adapters and test a different line input. If the noise changes when another component is disconnected, a ground-loop or neighboring power supply may be involved. Digital optical can isolate electrical grounds, but it should be chosen only when both devices support it; changing cables alone does not guarantee a quieter system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently overlooked details

  • Disc capacity is total capacity. Five-disc and six-disc ratings include the disc currently playing; they are not five or six additional discs waiting outside the mechanism.
  • In-play loading has limits. PlayXChange and the Onkyo carousel allow access to non-playing slots, but they do not make the playing disc removable while it is spinning.
  • Programming is not the same as capacity. Onkyo’s 40-track figure describes a sequence you can program, not 40 physical discs.
  • Output type determines compatibility. A changer cannot connect directly to an input it does not provide, and optical and coaxial cables are not interchangeable at the socket.
  • Specifications are not listening-test results. Capacity, formats, and outputs are verifiable features; “best sound” requires controlled evidence that is not supplied here.

Final buying guidance

Choose the Yamaha CD-C603 when five discs are enough and USB playback of MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, or FLAC is important. Choose the Onkyo DX-C390 when the sixth disc, 40-track programming, six repeat modes, or coaxial digital output solves a specific need. Neither should be advertised as a ten-disc changer.

If ten physical discs are non-negotiable, search the used market by exact model and demand proof of complete operation, compatible power, available parts, and the output connection your system needs. For most current systems, a correctly connected five- or six-disc changer is the more verifiable and supportable purchase.
