The most nostalgic Nintendo games are the ones that reconnect a particular generation of players with a familiar way to play: a first side-scrolling adventure, a handheld creature-collecting quest, or a living-room match shared with friends. This editorial shortlist spans Nintendo generations and platforming, adventure, role-playing, social simulation, sports, and multiplayer. It is a set of picks, not an official Nintendo ranking or the result of a nostalgia survey; which game feels most personal depends on when and how you played.

Dates below are qualified by region where Nintendo’s historical records specify one. Historical significance does not guarantee a game is currently included in a Nintendo Classics library.

10 nostalgic Nintendo games across generations

1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)

For many players, the original Super Mario Bros. is the defining 8-bit Nintendo memory: a side-scrolling platform game that established a recognizable starting point for the series. Nintendo’s company history records that it began selling for the NES in 1985. That is a historical milestone, not a claim that every player encountered it that year.

Best for: revisiting an early console-era platforming experience.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Super Mario World (Super NES)

Super Mario World represents the move into Nintendo’s 16-bit era. Nintendo’s 2006 annual report timeline records its U.S. release alongside the Super NES. It makes a useful contrast with the earlier NES pick: same central platforming appeal, a different console generation and visual era.

Best for: players whose formative Nintendo memories began with the Super NES.

3. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)

Super Mario 64 marks a major shift from the 2D platforming associated with earlier Mario games to a 3D environment. Nintendo’s annual report associates the game with the Nintendo 64 launch. Nintendo’s retrospective description of its reception is corporate history, not a measured ranking of players’ favorites.

Best for: remembering the transition to 3D console adventures.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)

Ocarina of Time is the list’s expansive adventure pick. Nintendo of Europe’s retrospective identifies it as a 1998 highlight and says it set new standards; that is a regional retrospective characterization, not a universal score or formal ranking. Its place here broadens the selection beyond platformers to a landmark Nintendo 64 adventure.

5. Pokémon Red and Blue (Game Boy)

Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue bring handheld role-playing and trading into the lineup. Nintendo’s annual report timeline records their release in Japan; that regional record should not be mistaken for a worldwide release date. A Japanese listing’s copyright attribution is also not a release-year source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: revisiting the portable role-playing and trading era.

6. Pokémon Gold and Silver (Game Boy Color)

Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver represent a later handheld generation. Nintendo’s annual report documents their Japanese introduction. Alongside Red and Blue, they make the list’s Pokémon entries distinct snapshots of the series’ early handheld years rather than interchangeable choices.

Best for: players whose nostalgia is tied to the Game Boy Color generation.

7. Animal Crossing: Wild World (Nintendo DS)

Animal Crossing: Wild World adds social simulation and handheld play to a list otherwise heavy on action and adventure. Nintendo of Europe’s retrospective names it among DS bestsellers in Europe. That supports its relevance in European Nintendo history; it is not proof of worldwide sales or popularity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: a gentler, social play experience associated with the DS era.

8. Wii Sports (Wii)

Wii Sports stands for the motion-control and shared-play period of Nintendo history. Nintendo of Europe’s timeline records the Wii’s 2006 launch and identifies Wii Sports among the titles underpinning its success. Its inclusion gives this shortlist a group-friendly sports pick rather than another solo adventure.

Best for: revisiting a motion-control game associated with playing together.

9. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GameCube)

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the list’s competitive multiplayer choice. Nintendo of Europe identifies it as a GameCube flagship. That regional retrospective context makes it a fitting representative of the console’s multiplayer era without implying a measured worldwide nostalgia ranking.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! rounds out the slate with local multiplayer racing. Nintendo of Europe’s history documents its 2003 release. Together with Melee, it gives the GameCube two different kinds of shared play: racing and versus combat.

Best for: a familiar local multiplayer session rather than a solo revisit.

How to choose the right game for your kind of nostalgia

Start with the memory you want to revisit, not an assumed consensus about which title is “most” nostalgic. These picks cover different systems and play styles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Early console platforming: Super Mario Bros. for NES or Super Mario World for Super NES.
  • 3D-era exploration: Super Mario 64 or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64.
  • Portable role-playing: Pokémon Red and Blue for Game Boy, or Pokémon Gold and Silver for Game Boy Color.
  • Relaxed social play: Animal Crossing: Wild World for Nintendo DS.
  • Motion-control or group play: Wii Sports for Wii.
  • GameCube multiplayer: Super Smash Bros. Melee for versus matches or Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for racing.

Session length and pace matter too. A quick shared match is a different kind of revisit from returning to a broader adventure or handheld role-playing game. Choose according to whether you want a short social session, a portable-era memory, or time to settle into a single-player world.

Can you play these classic Nintendo games in 2026?

Nintendo Support says Nintendo Classics libraries are available on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch for NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy. The GameCube Classics library is available on Nintendo Switch 2 only. Nintendo Switch 2 launched in 2025, according to the company’s history.

Access requires an internet connection and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership of the appropriate type; Nintendo says some libraries require an Expansion Pack membership. The support information also says an internet connection may be needed periodically to validate membership. The Virtual Boy Classics library is listed as available only in the U.S. and Canada.

These are library-level requirements, not confirmation that each of the ten games above is currently included. Catalogs, regions, and membership tiers matter. Check Nintendo’s live catalog for the individual title and your region before subscribing or choosing a game; the historical record alone cannot establish present-day availability.

How this shortlist was selected

The ten picks span console and handheld generations and recognizable play experiences, rather than concentrating on one franchise or one kind of player. The selection balances platforming, adventure, role-playing, social simulation, sports, and multiplayer, with both solo and shared-play options. Nintendo’s official histories provide useful chronology and regional context, but do not publish a nostalgia survey or authoritative top-ten ranking. The list is therefore an editorial way to explore classic Nintendo games, not a claim about what all players remember most.
