Updated for 2026: The best YouTube downloader depends on what “download” means to you. YouTube Premium is the only general-purpose option officially built into YouTube, but it saves encrypted offline copies inside YouTube rather than ordinary video files. For actual MP4, MKV, or audio files, yt-dlp is the most capable free option, while Stacher and Media Downloader make it easier to use through a graphical interface.
Availability, format quality, login requirements, and legality vary by video. Use these tools only for videos you own, have permission to download, or are allowed to save under applicable law. YouTube’s Terms also restrict downloading except where YouTube provides the feature, the rights holder permits it, or the law allows it.

YouTube Premium is the right choice when you want reliable offline playback without installing an extractor. On desktop, sign in to YouTube Premium, open the video’s watch page, and click Download below the video. In the mobile app, downloaded videos are available through the You tab.

There is an important limitation: Premium does not create an MP4 in File Explorer, Finder, or your phone’s gallery. The download is encrypted and remains inside YouTube’s offline system. 2. yt-dlp: the best free power-user downloader
yt-dlp is an open-source command-line downloader for YouTube and many other sites. It supports format selection, playlists, subtitles, metadata, audio extraction, scripting, and scheduled downloads. It is also actively updated, which matters because YouTube frequently changes its delivery and anti-automation systems.

3. Stacher: the easiest yt-dlp interface
Stacher provides a graphical interface for yt-dlp. Instead of typing commands, you paste a URL, select the output options, and start the download. Its standard GUI is free and does not impose download limits; Premium adds features such as themes, priority support, and a media library.
Stacher is not a separate extraction engine. yt-dlp does the underlying work, so YouTube compatibility can change when yt-dlp needs an update. If Stacher reports an extraction error, update the application or its yt-dlp component before assuming the video is unavailable.
4. Media Downloader: a flexible open-source GUI
Media Downloader is a Qt/C++ front end that uses yt-dlp by default. It can also work with extensions for tools such as gallery-dl, you-get, svtplay-dl, aria2c, and wget.
To add another back end, open Configure → Extensions → Add An Extension, then select the tool. During first launch, Media Downloader attempts to obtain the latest yt-dlp version, so internet access is required during setup.
The project lists a Windows Qt6 installer for Windows 10 or later and a portable Windows build. Antivirus software may occasionally flag the program as potentially unwanted. That may be a false positive, but verify that you downloaded it from the project’s GitHub repository and scan the file before running it.
5. 4K Video Downloader Plus: polished desktop software
4K Video Downloader Plus supports videos, playlists, channels, Shorts, subtitles, and audio extraction. It can export formats such as MP4 and MKV, while audio options include MP3, M4A, and OGG. Resolutions up to 4K or 8K are available only when the source and selected client provide them.
Its Smart Mode is useful for repeated downloads. Click the bulb icon in the top toolbar, enable Smart Mode, then choose the media type, quality, operating system, and destination folder.
The free edition is permanent but quantity-limited. SnapDownloader-style trial pricing should not be confused with this model. Also note that 4K Video Downloader and 4K Video Downloader Plus are separate applications with separate license keys, histories, and subscriptions.

6. SnapDownloader: good for batch jobs, but not permanently free
SnapDownloader is a paid Windows and macOS application aimed at playlist, channel, subtitle, chapter, and batch downloads. It supports audio extraction and resolutions up to 8K where available.
The basic workflow is straightforward: click Paste video link, select the format and quality, and click Download. The developer lists more than 1,100 tested websites, although support can change as sites change their delivery systems.
Do not describe SnapDownloader as a free unlimited downloader. Its current offer is a 48-hour trial. The developer lists Windows 8 or later and macOS 11 or later; 32-bit Windows support ended on November 1, 2025.
7. JDownloader 2: powerful queue management with a security caveat
JDownloader 2 is a general download manager with queues, pause/resume controls, bandwidth limits, and automatic archive extraction. YouTube support is plugin-based, so it can break when YouTube changes its systems.
Security warning: On May 6–7, 2026, selected Windows and Linux download links on the official JDownloader website redirected to malicious files. The genuine installer packages were not modified, and built-in updates were not affected. The links were restored after the incident.
If you downloaded an installer during that window, consult JDownloader’s incident notice and compare hashes or signatures. A genuine Windows installer should identify AppWork GmbH as its publisher. This incident is a reminder that an official-looking download page is not, by itself, proof that a file is safe.
8. MediaHuman YouTube Downloader: straightforward cross-platform use
MediaHuman YouTube Downloader offers installers for Windows 32-bit and 64-bit, macOS including Apple Silicon, and Linux/AppImage. Its interface is aimed at users who want to paste links and select a destination without learning command-line options.

MediaHuman publishes separate stable, legacy, and beta download branches, so check the exact build before installing. The company says its installers are checked with VirusTotal and contain no malicious code. That is a vendor statement, not an independent security guarantee; scan the downloaded file yourself when practical.

Do not confuse this product with MediaHuman’s separate YouTube to MP3 Converter. The latter is an audio-focused application.
9. Downie: the strongest Mac-only option
Downie is a polished macOS downloader supporting YouTube, Vimeo, and thousands of other sites. The developer lists Downie 4.12.10 for macOS 11 or later, with macOS 13 or newer strongly recommended. The listed permanent license price is $19.99; Setapp is a separate subscription route.
Browser extensions can send a page directly to Downie. The documented shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + D, although macOS help may display the Command symbol. For a site requiring authentication, use Browser → Login Browser… from the menu bar, sign in, and click Done.

10. ClipGrab: a lightweight legacy option
ClipGrab supports YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, and Facebook, with listed YouTube downloads up to 1080p. It can convert downloaded material to MPEG4, MP3, and other formats.
It ranks last because its current stable software is dated. The public changelog lists ClipGrab 3.8.5 from September 18, 2019, while the site advertises ClipGrab 4.0.0-beta1 for macOS. Features such as playlist downloads, browser authentication, subtitle downloads, and native Apple Silicon support are described in the 2026 fundraiser as planned ClipGrab 4 features, not established capabilities of the older stable release.
Use ClipGrab only if its current build works for your specific task. For a maintained free tool, yt-dlp or one of its graphical interfaces is the better starting point.

HTTP 403: forbidden
Usually update the downloader first. A 403 can result from an outdated extractor, missing PO Tokens, an expired media URL, anti-bot checks, or a format unavailable to the selected client. Repeatedly retrying an old version rarely fixes it.

HTTP 429 or 402: too many requests
You may have triggered rate limiting or an IP block. Stop parallel download jobs, solve any CAPTCHA in a normal browser, and follow the tool’s documented cookie and user-agent guidance. Do not keep hammering the same URL.
Only low-quality formats appear
High-quality YouTube video and audio are often separate streams. Install FFmpeg and use a current downloader capable of merging them. A tool may otherwise show only a lower-quality combined format.
Login or private playlist failure
Cookies may be necessary, but they do not bypass authorization. The signed-in account must already have access to the video. Treat exported cookies like passwords and remove them from scripts or shared computers afterward.

Live streams can change during capture, so the resulting file may not match the final archived version. DRM-protected movies and television episodes are different from ordinary streams; these tools should not be presented as DRM circumvention utilities. YouTube’s Terms prohibit bypassing copying or security controls.

- Choose the output you need. Select Premium for in-app offline viewing, or a desktop tool when you have a legitimate need for a local file.
- Prefer official project pages. Use the developer’s GitHub release, package repository, or download page rather than an advertising-heavy URL converter.
- Check the file. Review signatures or hashes when published, confirm the publisher identity on Windows, and scan unfamiliar installers with VirusTotal.
- Keep the downloader current. YouTube changes frequently, and an old build is a common cause of 403 errors and missing formats.
- Protect your account. Avoid passing cookies unless necessary, never share cookie files, and avoid large automated batches against a personal account.
