The best translation app for Android depends on what you need to translate. Google Translate is the strongest all-rounder, while DeepL is better suited to polished writing, Microsoft Translator to group conversations, and Papago to Korean, Japanese, and Chinese translation.

Offline support also needs careful checking. An app may translate typed text without an internet connection but still require a connection for speech, camera translation, or conversation mode. The recommendations below reflect each app’s practical strengths rather than treating “best” as a single accuracy ranking.

Best translation apps for Android at a glance

Its current Android listing advertises separate language totals for different features: 108 typed-translation languages, 59 offline languages, 94 instant-camera languages, 90 photo-translation languages, 70 conversation languages, 96 handwriting languages, and eight Transcribe languages. These numbers should not be combined into one universal language count. A language available for typed translation may not be available for offline speech or camera translation.

How to download languages for offline use

  1. Open Google Translate.
  2. Tap a language shown at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Download beside the language.
  4. To manage downloads later, open Menu → Settings → Data usage → Downloaded languages.

Google also provides options such as Ask before downloading and Use Wi-Fi or mobile network. If there is no Download button for a language, Google does not currently offer it offline. Camera, speech, and conversation features may still require an internet connection.

Tap to Translate normally works by copying text in another app and then tapping the Google Translate icon. Google’s current help documentation distinguishes this from live translation inside other apps, which is available only on Pixel 6 and newer devices.

Choose it if: you want one app for travel, menus, signs, conversations, and occasional offline use.

2. DeepL Translate — best for polished text

DeepL is the strongest choice here when the wording matters more than the number of supported languages. It is particularly useful for emails, documents, professional writing, and sentences where a literal translation sounds awkward.

The Android app supports typed translation, camera and photo translation, dictation, text-to-speech, alternative translations, favorites, history, transliteration, file translation, and writing improvement. Glossaries and formal or informal tone selection are associated with paid plans, and some features require a DeepL account.

Translate text from an image in DeepL

  1. Open DeepL and select the Translate tab.
  2. Tap Camera.
  3. Tap the Image button.
  4. Choose a picture from your phone.

DeepL overlays the translated text on the image. Results deteriorate with small, poorly lit, handwritten, or highly stylized text. Its documentation also says image translation does not support Greek or other Cyrillic-script languages as the source language.

DeepL should not be described as a completely offline translator. The app can provide offline access to saved terms, but its full translation service and file translation are not an unrestricted offline equivalent to Google Translate.

Choose it if: you need a more polished first draft, alternative wording, or writing assistance rather than maximum language coverage.

3. Microsoft Translator — best for group conversations

Microsoft Translator’s distinguishing feature is its multi-device conversation mode. It is designed for meetings, classrooms, tours, interviews, and other situations where several people need to follow the same translated discussion.

Start a shared conversation

  1. Start a conversation in the Android app.
  2. Share the generated five-letter conversation code.
  3. Have other participants join through the Translator app or Microsoft’s website.
  4. Let each participant speak or type in their own language.

Participants see translated text on their own devices. Microsoft also advertises downloadable offline translation packs and live translated captions. Speech recognition can still struggle with background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, poor microphones, and unsupported language pairs.

Choose it if: translation needs to be shared across several phones rather than displayed on one person’s screen.

4. Naver Papago — best for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese

Papago is a focused alternative to the larger general-purpose translators. Its Android listing supports 14 languages: Korean, English, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Russian, German, Italian, and Arabic.

It includes text, image, voice, conversation, handwriting, website translation, a dictionary, Papago Mini, and an advertised offline feature. Its regional focus makes it especially worth trying for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese text, signs, menus, and everyday phrases.

There is an important offline caveat. The Play listing advertises offline translation, but Papago’s current help documentation says the translator service is unavailable without a network connection and lists only items such as the phrasebook, favorites, and tags as available offline. Do not rely on Papago as your sole offline translator without testing the exact language pair and current app version first.

Papago requires Android 8.0 or newer. Camera and image translation may require camera permission; voice and conversation modes require microphone permission; Papago Mini uses notification permission on Android 13 and later.

Choose it if: your main language pair involves Korean, Japanese, or Chinese and you want a dedicated alternative to Google.

5. Yandex Translate — best for defined offline pairs

Yandex Translate advertises online translation among 100 languages, but its documented offline support is much narrower. After downloading languages and enabling offline mode in Settings, it supports French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, or Turkish translated to English.

The app also supports text, speech, and camera translation. Visual text recognition covers 45 languages, but camera translation works only while online. Speech input is listed for Russian, Ukrainian, English, and Turkish, with spoken output available for translations.

Prepare Yandex Translate for offline use

  1. Download the required language packs.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Enable offline mode.

Choose it if: your offline requirement is specifically one of the documented language-to-English pairs. It is not a good choice if you expect offline camera translation.

6. iTranslate Translator — best for travelers willing to pay

iTranslate combines text, voice, conversation, camera, and photo translation in one Android app. Its Pro tier adds offline text and voice translation, voice conversations, and camera translation, making it a practical option for travelers who would rather pay for a predictable travel tool.

The free app and Pro version should be treated as different products. Offline translation and some advanced voice and camera functions are not necessarily included in the free tier. Language availability also varies by feature and subscription, so check the language pair inside the app before purchasing.

Choose it if: you are prepared to subscribe for offline travel features and want a dedicated voice-and-camera translator.

7. Reverso Translate and Learn — best for context

Reverso is less about translating the maximum number of languages and more about showing how a word or phrase is used. Its results combine translation and dictionary information with contextual examples, which helps when several English equivalents appear plausible.

The mobile app includes voice translation, camera scanning, flashcards, and quizzes based on searches and favorites. It is especially helpful to language learners who want to understand register, collocations, and natural sentence patterns instead of copying a single machine-generated answer.

Reverso should not be treated as an offline-first general translator. Its current mobile materials emphasize online translation, camera, voice, and learning tools rather than broad offline operation.

Choose it if: you are learning a language or need examples before deciding which translation sounds natural.

8. U Dictionary — best for dictionary-style offline lookup

U Dictionary is built more like a dictionary with translation features than like a live interpreting tool. Its listing includes Collins and WordNet content, examples, synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary support, Quick Translate, and offline sentence translation for 58 languages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it useful for looking up a word, checking related forms, or translating short sentences without opening a full translator. It is less suitable for continuous speech or a two-way conversation. Ads and in-app purchases are part of the app, so not every dictionary, learning, or translation feature should be assumed to be unrestricted and free.

Choose it if: you want offline vocabulary and sentence lookup with dictionary material alongside the translation.

9. Dict Box — best offline dictionary and cross-app lookup

Dict Box is another dictionary-first option. It offers offline dictionaries, pronunciation, camera word translation, phrase lookup, spelling correction, flashcards, and translation from browsers or other apps.

Its downloadable dictionary catalog includes languages such as English, Spanish, Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian, German, Turkish, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Italian, Persian, Thai, Hebrew, Urdu, Dutch, Indonesian, Hindi, Swedish, Danish, Greek, Polish, Romanian, and Ukrainian. Additional dictionaries may need to be installed separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dict Box is better described as an offline word-lookup tool than as a replacement for Google Translate’s live conversation and continuous speech modes. It also contains ads and in-app purchases.

Choose it if: you frequently read in another language and want definitions, pronunciation, and lookup from other Android apps.

10. WordReference — best for human-edited reference

WordReference belongs on this list because many translation problems are really dictionary and usage problems. Its Android app provides bilingual dictionaries, definitions, conjugators, and forums containing more than two million questions and answers.

The forums can reveal regional differences, idioms, and explanations that a short machine translation may miss. However, WordReference explicitly provides online dictionaries rather than an automatic sentence translator. You cannot enter an entire sentence and expect Google Translate-style output, and the app requires internet access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users on Android 7.1 or earlier should update to the latest available version to restore app functionality, according to the current Play listing.

Choose it if: you are studying a language or need human-edited definitions and forum context more than instant sentence translation.

How to choose the right Android translation app

  1. Choose the input type first. For typed text, nearly every major app will work. For menus and signs, check camera support. For meetings, look specifically for conversation mode.
  2. Check the exact language pair. “Supports 100 languages” usually refers to online text translation. Camera, speech, handwriting, offline, and transcription lists are normally smaller.
  3. Test offline mode before traveling. Download the packs while connected to Wi-Fi, switch on airplane mode, and test the phrases, camera, and voice functions you expect to use.
  4. Allow the required permissions. Camera translation needs camera access; speech and conversation need microphone access. Denying either permission can look like an app failure.
  5. Keep a backup for important communication. Machine translation can misread signs, names, handwriting, accents, and noisy speech. For medical, legal, or safety-critical information, confirm the result with a qualified human.

Common translation-app limitations

  • Offline does not mean every feature works offline. A downloaded text model may not include camera, speech, conversation, or transcription.
  • Camera OCR is not perfect. Small, dark, curved, handwritten, or decorative text is difficult for translation apps to recognize.
  • Conversation mode needs clear audio. Use a quiet room, avoid overlapping speech, and check microphone permissions when recognition fails.
  • Subscription labels matter. iTranslate Pro, DeepL account features, glossaries, tone controls, and some dictionary content may require payment.
  • Reference apps are not automatically translators. WordReference and dictionary-focused apps can be better for word choice, but they do not all translate complete sentences.

FAQ

What is the best free translation app for Android?

Google Translate is the best general free option for most Android users because it combines typed, camera, speech, handwriting, conversation, and offline features. Check the exact language and feature before relying on it.

Which Android translation app works best offline?

Google Translate is the most flexible offline choice, provided you download the required language packs first. Yandex Translate supports a smaller set of documented offline pairs, while iTranslate reserves important offline features for Pro. Offline support does not necessarily include camera or speech translation.

Is DeepL better than Google Translate on Android?

DeepL is often the better choice for polished writing, alternative wording, and formal text. Google Translate is more versatile for travel, camera translation, conversations, handwriting, and broad language coverage. The better app depends on the task.

Can WordReference translate full sentences?

No. WordReference is an online dictionary and reference app with definitions, conjugators, and user forums. It is useful for understanding word choice and context, but it is not an automatic full-sentence translator.

The Bottom Line

Install Google Translate if you want the best all-purpose Android translator. Add DeepL for polished writing, Microsoft Translator for group conversations, Papago for Korean, Japanese, or Chinese, and Reverso or WordReference when context and language learning matter more than instant translation.

Before leaving home, download the required language packs and test the app with mobile data disabled. That is the quickest way to discover whether your chosen camera, voice, or conversation feature actually works offline.
