The best Pokémon emulator for Windows depends on the console you want to emulate. mGBA is the strongest simple choice for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. For Nintendo DS titles, melonDS and DeSmuME are the main choices. Azahar is the current project to investigate for Nintendo 3DS, while Switch emulation requires a Ryujinx-derived build rather than the discontinued original project.
This list focuses on Windows 10 and Windows 11, practical setup, save reliability, controller support, and the emulator’s current project status. Use game files and BIOS or firmware dumps that you are legally entitled to use.

1. mGBA — best overall Pokémon emulator
mGBA is the easiest recommendation for Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen, and other Game Boy-family games. It supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance software and runs on Windows 7 or newer, which includes both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Important save-location fix
Do not put the emulator or your ROM collection under C:Program Files. Windows UAC permissions can prevent mGBA from creating save files there. A folder such as C:UsersYourNameDocumentsEmulationGBA is a safer choice.
If gameplay or audio stutters, use mGBA’s sync and audio-buffer settings. The precise labels can vary by build, so start with those two groups rather than randomly changing video filters. Also note that the standalone mGBA release and its RetroArch core are not always synchronized; a problem fixed in standalone mGBA may still exist in the core.
2. VisualBoyAdvance-M — best mGBA alternative
VisualBoyAdvance-M, often shortened to VBA-M, is another established emulator for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. It supports Windows XP and newer, so Windows 10 and 11 are within its stated platform range.

Windows downloads are provided through the project’s GitHub Releases tab. Nightly builds are hosted separately. For most players, use a regular release rather than a nightly unless you need a specific fix or are testing the project.
VBA-M is useful if you already have an existing configuration or save library built around it. If a bad setting prevents the emulator from working correctly, use Help → Factory Reset to reset its configuration file.
Older or weaker computers may struggle with the higher-level xBRZ and ScaleFX video scalers. Start with a simpler scaler and only increase the quality if the game remains at full speed.
3. melonDS — best for Nintendo DS Pokémon games
melonDS is a Nintendo DS emulator and a strong choice for Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, and White. It is particularly suitable when you want the DS’s two-screen layout and stylus-oriented controls represented more faithfully than a simple single-screen setup.

There is one important firmware distinction. Firmware boot requires a BIOS/firmware dump from an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite. A firmware dump from a DSi or 3DS is not bootable for this purpose because it lacks the required boot code. Those newer dumps can be suitable for direct game boot, but they do not replace the original DS or DS Lite firmware for firmware boot.

The project documents firmware files in sizes of 128 KB, 256 KB, and 512 KB, depending on the firmware type. melonDS also still lists better DSi emulation, improved OpenGL rendering, netplay, and separate windows for the two screens among its unfinished work, so do not expect every advanced feature to be complete.
The official repository does not provide a stable Windows version number in the project information used here. Check the current Releases page rather than relying on an old article’s version number.
4. DeSmuME — best established DS alternative
DeSmuME is another practical Nintendo DS choice for Pokémon DS games. Its Windows documentation uses the path File → Open Rom; select the game’s .nds file.

Automatic state files use the ROM name followed by extensions such as .ds0 and .ds1. Do not confuse those with normal in-game backup saves: DeSmuME uses .dsv for native backup-memory files.
To import a save from another emulator, use File → Import Backup Memory. The documented formats include .duc, raw .sav, and no$gba .sav files. You can export a raw .sav or no$gba-compatible save through File → Export Backup Memory.
DeSmuME also documents Emulation → GBA Slot, with options including NONE, Compact Flash, Rumble Pack, GBA Game, and Guitar Grip. These options matter for DS software that expects a particular accessory. The Windows manual is an older document, so labels such as “Open Rom” may not match every current build exactly.
5. RetroArch — best if you want one frontend
RetroArch is not an emulator by itself. It is a frontend that loads emulator cores. This makes it convenient for keeping Game Boy, GBA, DS, and other systems in one interface, but it also adds another setup layer compared with standalone mGBA or DeSmuME.

- Select User Interface.
- Open Menu Item Visibility.
- Enable Show Core Downloader.
- Go to Online Updater → Select Core Downloader.
- Install the core you need.
Available Pokémon-related cores depend on the RetroArch build and platform. The official site advertises more than 200 cores, but that does not mean every build exposes every core. Website and app-store versions can also differ in functionality. For the least complicated GBA setup, standalone mGBA is usually easier; RetroArch becomes more attractive when you want a unified library, shaders, hotkeys, and controller configuration.
6. BizHawk — best for TAS tools and detailed recording
BizHawk is a multi-system emulator designed especially for tool-assisted speedruns and precise input recording. Its main Windows application is normally EmuHawk.exe, and the quick-start path is File → Open ROM.
Run the Windows prerequisites installer before launching EmuHawk. Keep each BizHawk version in its own folder. Mixing files from different releases can lead to crashes, missing dependencies, broken cores, or movie-sync problems.
Useful paths include:
- Config → Firmware… for firmware management.
- Config → Controllers… for controller mapping.
- Tools → TAStudio for tool-assisted work.
- Config → Speed/Skip → Speed 100% if emulation falls below full speed.
If performance is poor, try OpenGL or Direct3D instead of GDI+. For movie-recording out-of-memory errors, enable Config → Customize → Store movie working data on disk instead of RAM. BizHawk does not include BIOS or firmware files, so you must supply legally obtained files when a system requires them.
7. Project64 — best for Pokémon Stadium
Project64 is the relevant choice for Nintendo 64 Pokémon games such as Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2. It also supports Nintendo 64DD software. Its features include save states, built-in cheat codes, controller support, fullscreen mode, and multiple graphics-plugin options.
The project lists 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems. Listed minimum hardware includes a 1 GHz Intel or AMD processor with SSE2 and 2 GB of RAM. Renderer requirements depend on the selected plugin and include OpenGL 3.3, Vulkan 1.1, or DirectX 8 for the relevant options.
Meeting the written requirements does not guarantee identical results on every PC. Project64 specifically warns that Intel integrated graphics can show problems that do not appear on Nvidia or AMD GPUs. Update the graphics driver before troubleshooting a black screen, missing textures, or unstable frame rate.

8. Azahar — best current 3DS option
Azahar is the current project to investigate for Nintendo 3DS Pokémon games, including Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. The former Lime3DS repository now redirects to Azahar.
Azahar was created by merging PabloMK7’s Citra fork with Lime3DS after Citra was taken down. It targets 64-bit Windows 10, as well as modern 64-bit Linux and macOS 13.4 or newer.
Windows distributions are offered as an installer and a ZIP archive on the project’s Releases page. If you are unsure whether to choose the MSVC or MSYS2 package, the project recommends MSYS2. Use the installer for a conventional setup or the ZIP archive when you want a portable folder.
This naming matters: current articles that describe Lime3DS as the active project are outdated. Search for Azahar and use its current Releases page instead of downloading an old Lime3DS package from an unofficial mirror.

For Pokémon Scarlet, Violet, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!, and other Switch titles, current documentation points to a Ryujinx-derived successor, not the original Ryujinx project. The original project was discontinued on October 1, 2024. The successor describes itself as a quality-of-life fork for existing Ryujinx users, not a revival of the original project.
Stable builds are based on the master branch and are released roughly monthly. Canary builds are generated for every master commit and may be unstable or completely broken, so stable is the sensible starting point.
One useful performance feature is the persistent translation cache, enabled by default under Options → System. Launch a game to its title screen or beyond at least twice. Cache improvements generally apply from the third launch onward.
To find the emulator’s data folder, use File → Open Ryujinx Folder. The configuration file is Config.json. Ordinary keyboard, mouse, touch, Joy-Con, and most controller input is supported. Dual-Joy-Con motion support requires DS4Windows or BetterJoy.

10. Citra — legacy only, not a current recommendation
Citra is included only to prevent confusion with older Pokémon emulator lists. It is not an appropriate current standalone recommendation. Citra was taken down, and Azahar’s project states that Azahar was formed from a Citra fork and Lime3DS. If you already have a legitimate, working Citra installation, you may encounter older guides that refer to it, but do not treat an old “official Citra download” page as a current source.
For a new Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, investigate Azahar instead. This is also why simply replacing Citra with an old Lime3DS download is not the right update path: the Lime3DS repository now redirects to Azahar.

Basic Windows setup advice
- Download from the project’s official site or repository. Avoid search-result download portals that bundle installers or advertise obsolete projects.
- Use a writable folder. For example, create
C:Emulationwith subfolders for each system. This avoids the save-permission problem commonly seen when mGBA files are placed underProgram Files. - Keep saves backed up. Copy normal battery saves as well as save-state files. A save state is not a replacement for the game’s own save system.
- Supply firmware only when required. melonDS firmware boot and some BizHawk cores require files that the emulator does not provide.
- Start with native resolution and simple graphics settings. Increase scaling, shaders, and filters only after confirming that the game runs at full speed.
- Use stable builds first. Nightly and canary releases can solve a specific issue, but they can also introduce regressions or fail to start.

Why is mGBA not saving my Pokémon game?
Move the ROM and emulator out of protected locations such as C:\Program Files. Use a writable folder under your user profile, such as Documents or a dedicated C:\Emulation folder.
Do I need BIOS files for Nintendo DS Pokémon games?
