The useful kind of PC optimization is maintenance you can verify: reclaiming disk space, removing software you no longer use, controlling startup entries, reviewing privacy settings, and finding what is consuming storage. It is not a promise that a registry scan will make an older processor faster.

This list ranks free Windows 10 and Windows 11 tools by the job they actually perform. Windows’ built-in tools come first in several workflows, while third-party utilities are most helpful when they provide a better view or a more convenient interface.

Windows 10 warning: Windows 10 Home and Pro 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A cleanup utility cannot restore security updates. If your computer is eligible, upgrade to Windows 11 or investigate Microsoft’s applicable ESU program.

havit HV-F2056 Laptop Cooling Pad for 15.6-17 Inch Laptops, Black | Three quiet USB-powered fans circulate air below the laptop, two height settings improve viewing and typing comfort
  • Ultra-Portable: Slim, portable, and light weight allowing you to protect your investment wherever you go
  • Ergonomic Comfort: Doubles as an ergonomic stand with two adjustable height settings
  • Optimized for Laptop Carrying: The metal mesh provides your laptop with a stable laptop carrying surface
  • Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
  • Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter

It supports Windows 10 version 19042 or later and Windows 11. Its main advantage is familiarity: it complements Windows rather than trying to replace Windows Security or the Settings app.

Use it when

  • You want a guided cleanup rather than a large list of technical options.
  • You need to review storage recommendations and temporary files.
  • You want basic controls for unwanted pop-ups and background activity.

For a more precise decision about what will be removed, use Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. PC Manager is convenient, but convenience should not replace reviewing the deletion list.

2. BleachBit

BleachBit is a free, open-source cleaner for temporary files, browser data, and application remnants. The developer lists BleachBit 6.0.2 as the current stable Windows release, with both an installer and a portable ZIP for Windows 10 and 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its detailed checkboxes make it useful when you want to select individual applications and data categories. It can remove browser cookies, sessions, caches, and other files, so the preview step matters. Deleting cookies may sign you out of websites, and removing sessions can discard tabs or saved local state.

Safer BleachBit workflow

  1. Download it from the official BleachBit site, not an unrelated software-download mirror.
  2. Open the application and select a small group of categories first.
  3. Use Preview to inspect the files and estimated space.
  4. Leave browser sessions, cookies, saved passwords, and other personal data selected only if you understand the consequence.
  5. Use Clean after reviewing the preview.

The developer documents Windows Defender SmartScreen warnings for its installer. That does not make a third-party mirror trustworthy; use the official download and verify the publisher or source if Windows displays a warning.

3. CCleaner Free

CCleaner Free remains a straightforward choice for temporary-file and browser-privacy cleanup. It is easy to navigate and provides a familiar scan-and-review workflow.

The official pages currently show conflicting build information: the download page lists CCleaner v7.08.1414 dated June 22, 2026, while the builds page lists CCleaner Free v7.10.1464 as the latest official release. Check the displayed version immediately before downloading because product pages can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Free edition includes standard cleaning and privacy protection. Performance Optimizer, Driver Updater, Software Updater, scheduled cleaning, and complete cleaning are paid features. Do not assume that a feature promoted on the main product page is included in Free.

Kootek Laptop Cooling Pad Cooler Stand with 5 Quiet Fans for 12"-17" Laptop
  • Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
  • Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
  • Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
  • Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
  • Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.

Review cookie selections before cleaning. Removing cookies can sign you out of websites and remove preferences. Also ignore the temptation to use a registry cleaner as a “speed” feature: Microsoft does not support registry-cleaning utilities and warns that incorrect registry changes can cause instability or require Windows to be reinstalled.

4. Glary Utilities Free

Glary Utilities Free groups temporary-file cleanup, startup management, and other maintenance tools into one dashboard. It suits users who want more controls than PC Manager provides but do not need the depth of Sysinternals Autoruns.

The official download page lists version 6.44.0.48, released June 29, 2026. It supports Windows 11 and Windows 10, along with older Windows versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the edition boundaries before installing it. The Free edition requires manual updating, while automatic updating, automatic maintenance, complete cleaning, and unlimited support are listed as Professional features.

Glary Utilities also includes registry-related functions. Treat those as optional at most, not as routine optimization. Removing registry entries is not a reliable substitute for uninstalling an application properly, and Microsoft’s support policy does not endorse registry cleaners.

5. O&O ShutUp10 Free

O&O ShutUp10 Free is a privacy configuration tool rather than a performance cleaner. It exposes settings for telemetry, advertising ID, background-app permissions, and some update-delivery behaviour that Windows otherwise spreads across several pages.

The current official build listed by O&O is 3.2.1111, released July 15, 2026. It is portable, requires no conventional installation, and supports Windows 10 and 11 in 64-bit, 32-bit, and ARM64 editions. It requires administrator privileges because it changes Windows settings and registry values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important limitation

The Free edition does not automatically reapply settings after Windows updates. Review the tool again after a major update instead of assuming the configuration is permanent.

  • 👑【Double USB Ports】One USB port can power the laptop cooler, the other one can be connected to external devices, such as keyboard, mouse, audio, etc. Blue LED indicators confirm the fans are running. Note: The included cable is USB-A to USB-A.

Do not apply every recommendation blindly. Update-related settings can affect automatic Windows updates, driver delivery, or Microsoft Store app behaviour. Create a restore point or record your original settings, change only the options you understand, and keep Windows security updates enabled unless you have a specific, well-understood reason not to.

6. Autoruns for Windows

Autoruns from Microsoft Sysinternals is the most capable startup-investigation tool in this list. Unlike Task Manager’s Startup tab, it examines auto-start locations including scheduled tasks, services, Explorer extensions, drivers, Winlogon entries, and more.

The current version is Autoruns 14.3. The download includes the graphical Autoruns program and the command-line Autorunsc utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use Autoruns without breaking Windows

  1. Run Autoruns as administrator.
  2. Open Options and select Hide Signed Microsoft Entries. This narrows the initial view to entries that deserve investigation.
  3. Use the publisher, image path, description, and VirusTotal-related information where available to identify third-party software.
  4. Search for a specific application rather than disabling unrelated entries in bulk.
  5. Uncheck an entry to disable it. Do not use Entry > Delete unless you are certain the item is unwanted and will never be needed.
  6. Restart Windows and confirm that the application or hardware still works.

Do not disable security software, touchpad and audio components, graphics utilities, backup clients, cloud-sync tools, or hardware services merely because they start with Windows. Autoruns exposes locations where an incorrect change can affect the shell, drivers, logon process, or system services.

7. Bulk Crap Uninstaller

Bulk Crap Uninstaller (BCUninstaller) is designed for removing unwanted applications, including situations where you need to process several programs instead of opening each uninstaller separately. It supports Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11.

This is particularly useful after testing software, cleaning up an old PC, or removing a group of applications that accumulated over time. Its value is uninstall management—not faster CPU performance.

Bulk removal needs a slower, more deliberate review than ordinary cleanup. Check every selected application and read the prompts. Be cautious with shared runtimes, drivers, game launchers, VPN components, and applications used by other Windows accounts. If you are unsure what a package does, leave it installed until you identify it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. WizTree

WizTree quickly scans a drive and shows which files and folders consume the most space. It is a good choice when Windows reports that a drive is full but does not make the cause obvious.

  • 【Quiet Operation with Smooth Speed Control】 Enjoy focused work or gameplay thanks to virtually silent fan operation. Adjust wind speed smoothly with the rolling wheel controller to balance cooling power and noise level—ideal for office or shared environments.
  • 【Universal Compatibility & Practical USB Ports】 Designed for laptops up to 15.6 inches, this cooler is perfect for home, office, or on-the-go use. Two additional USB ports offer convenient connectivity for peripherals like mice, keyboards, or phones.

The official page lists WizTree 4.30, released March 6, 2026, for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. After scanning, sort by size and investigate obvious candidates such as old installers, downloaded archives, videos, virtual-machine images, and forgotten backups.

Size is not a deletion recommendation. Do not delete a large file from C:Windows, C:Program Files, application-data directories, or a user profile simply because WizTree displays it prominently. Confirm what owns the file first. Remove downloads through File Explorer, uninstall applications through Windows or an uninstaller, and use an application’s own cache controls where possible.

9. WinDirStat

WinDirStat is a free, open-source disk-usage analyzer licensed under GPLv2. Its treemap gives a visual explanation of disk usage: large blocks represent large files, while colours help distinguish file types.

It is useful for planning cleanup rather than performing blind cleanup. Look for large personal files, old installation media, duplicate downloads, and application caches. Then remove them through File Explorer or the application that created them.

The project provides Microsoft Store, installer, ZIP, and portable-style distribution options and documents its WinGet package ID. To install it with Microsoft’s package manager, open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:

winget install -e --id WinDirStat.WinDirStat

If WinGet cannot find the package, confirm the identifier with:

winget search WinDirStat

10. Microsoft PowerToys

Microsoft PowerToys is not a cleaner, but it belongs on a broader optimization list because it improves everyday Windows workflows. Its free, open-source utilities include FancyZones for window layouts, PowerRename for batch renaming, Text Extractor, Keyboard Manager, and PowerToys Run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PowerToys can be installed using an executable, the Microsoft Store, WinGet, Chocolatey, or Scoop. Individual utilities can be enabled or disabled, so you do not have to use every component.

It will not optimize startup, clean the registry, repair a failing drive, or increase processor performance. Its benefit is measured in fewer repetitive steps: arranging windows, renaming a photo collection, launching tools quickly, or extracting text from an image.

Windows tools to try before installing a cleaner

Third-party software is unnecessary for several common maintenance tasks. Start with these built-in paths:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage for an overview of drive usage.
  2. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps before selecting Clean up.
  3. Search for Disk Cleanup, select a drive, and choose Clean up system files when you need to include system cleanup categories.
  4. Search for defrag and open Defragment and Optimize Drives. Windows analyzes and optimizes hard drives differently from SSDs; for an SSD, the process uses TRIM rather than conventional defragmentation.
  5. In Defragment and Optimize Drives, select Change Settings under Scheduled optimization to review the schedule. Windows uses a weekly default schedule.

Deleting a cache mainly recovers space. It can also remove data that helps an application or browser start faster, after which the cache will be rebuilt. A larger “cleaned” number is therefore not the same as a faster computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful WinGet commands

WinGet works on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 1809 or later, although some systems have PATH or client-availability problems. Use a specific package ID when possible:

winget list

To see available upgrades:

winget upgrade

To upgrade one application:

winget upgrade --id <PackageId>

If several packages match an application name, run winget search <application-name> and confirm the exact ID before installing or upgrading.

What these programs cannot fix

  • Low RAM: Cleanup may free storage but cannot turn a 4 GB system into an 8 GB system.
  • A failing drive: A disk-usage analyzer can show large files, but it cannot repair hardware or recover corrupted data.
  • Malware: Use Windows Security or a reputable security product rather than relying on a “PC optimizer” scan.
  • Thermal throttling: Removing temporary files does not fix blocked vents, a failed fan, or dried thermal compound.
  • Unsupported Windows 10: Maintenance software does not provide operating-system security support after October 14, 2025.

FAQ

What is the best free PC optimization software for Windows 11?

Microsoft PC Manager is the simplest overall choice for guided cleanup and basic health checks. For a specific task, WizTree or WinDirStat is better for finding large files, Autoruns is better for advanced startup investigation, and O&O ShutUp10 Free is better for privacy settings.

Do registry cleaners make Windows faster?

There is no reliable reason to expect a registry cleaner to produce a meaningful performance improvement. Microsoft does not support registry-cleaning utilities and warns that incorrect registry changes can cause Windows instability or require reinstallation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to disable every startup program?

No. Some startup entries provide security protection, cloud backup, audio, graphics, touchpad, keyboard, or other hardware functions. Disable one clearly identified third-party item at a time and test Windows after restarting.

Should I defragment an SSD with a third-party optimizer?

No. Use Windows’ built-in Defragment and Optimize Drives tool. Windows uses TRIM for SSD maintenance, while conventional defragmentation is intended for hard disk drives.

The Bottom Line

For most people, start with Windows Settings > System > Storage and Microsoft PC Manager. Choose BleachBit or CCleaner Free when you want a more detailed temporary-file review, WizTree or WinDirStat when the problem is unexplained disk usage, Autoruns when startup needs investigation, and BCUninstaller when unwanted applications are the issue. Use O&O ShutUp10 Free for carefully reviewed privacy changes and PowerToys for workflow improvements.

Skip registry-cleaning promises and one-click changes you cannot undo. The best optimization is a specific, reversible maintenance task with a visible result—not a large scan report claiming that Windows has been magically repaired.
