There is no single best data-only eSIM for every trip. The right choice depends on every destination on your itinerary, the amount of data you expect to use, validity period, hotspot rules, activation requirements and whether your phone is both eSIM-capable and unlocked. This guide compares ten widely available services without pretending that a global ranking can stay accurate as plans and coverage change.

Five providers have enough documented information for a detailed comparison: Ubigi, Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Holafly. Five others—aloSIM, Airhub, FlexiRoam, GigSky and Firsty—are included as narrower options to investigate, not as fully verified winners. Check the provider’s live destination page immediately before purchase.

What a data-only eSIM does

An eSIM is a programmable SIM profile downloaded to a compatible device. A data-only plan supplies mobile internet but normally does not provide a regular mobile number for ordinary voice calls or SMS. You can still use messaging and calling apps over the data connection, while your existing SIM remains available for calls or texts if your carrier and roaming settings allow it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Airalo’s offering reviewed by TechRadar is described as data-only, with no ordinary calls or SMS. Do not confuse that with Saily’s separate monthly US-number product, which is a different offer and requires identity verification. Read the exact product description rather than assuming every plan from a provider has identical features.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check these requirements before buying

Confirm eSIM support and an unlocked phone

Airalo’s help guidance says the handset must support eSIM and be network-unlocked. Nomad directs customers to its device-compatibility list. A phone can contain an eSIM menu yet remain carrier-locked, so check both conditions with your carrier or manufacturer before paying.

  • Find your exact phone model and regional variant in the provider’s compatibility checker.
  • Confirm that the carrier-lock status says unlocked; a dual-SIM label alone is not enough.
  • Install operating-system updates before travel, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Check that your destination bands and the plan’s listed network partners are supported.

Check the itinerary, not just the country name

Plans may be local, regional or global. Airalo lists all three formats, and the included territories differ by plan. A regional plan can cover your main destination but omit a border crossing, island or stopover. Open the coverage list for every country and territory you will enter, including transit stops where you may need data.

How to compare plans that look similar

What to compare Why it changes the decision What to verify on the live plan page
Included destinations A larger data allowance is useless if the plan excludes one of your stops. Local, regional or global scope; named countries and territories; network partner.
Total data and validity Validity may begin at installation, first connection or a stated date. Gigabytes or unlimited wording, start trigger, expiry time and extension rules.
Hotspot/tethering Laptops, tablets and a second phone can consume data quickly, and some plans restrict sharing. Whether tethering is permitted, any daily cap, and whether the rule differs by destination or tier.
Speed and fair use “Unlimited” can still mean reduced speeds after a threshold. Fair-use threshold, throttled speed, reset period and network-management language.
Activation and top-ups You may need connectivity before the first connection or while adding data. Wi-Fi requirement, QR-code or in-app installation, add-on availability and expiry after a top-up.
Voice, SMS and numbers Data-only plans do not replace a normal phone service. Whether a local number is included and whether identity verification is required.
Support and refunds An installation problem is harder to solve after landing. Support hours, refund conditions and whether an unused plan can be transferred.

Five providers with clearly documented positioning

1. Ubigi — broad device support and flexible plan types

TechRadar’s review, last updated 22 September 2026, named Ubigi its overall pick and reported coverage in 201 destinations. The review describes one-off, monthly and annual plans, plus an app that can top up an account without consuming the eSIM’s data connection. Ubigi says its mobile-data service supports smartphones, tablets, laptops and connected cars.

That range is useful when one account serves several device types or when you need a recurring plan rather than a single holiday package. The same review says Ubigi has no voice or SMS add-ons and notes that Nomad can be cheaper in some regions. Compare the actual destination allowance and validity instead of treating the overall label as a universal price or coverage guarantee.

2. Saily — security-oriented app features

TechRadar named Saily best for security, citing integrated ad blocking, web protection and virtual-location features. Saily’s homepage advertises plans from 1 GB to unlimited, with global and regional options, and defines an eSIM as “a digital SIM that lets you switch carriers and use multiple mobile plans without swapping cards.”

  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The security tools are optional app features, not proof that every connection is private or that performance will be consistent. TechRadar reported variable connection performance by destination and a requirement for Wi-Fi during initial activation. Install and activate before departure, then verify that the destination appears in the plan’s coverage list. Saily’s separate monthly US-number product requires identity verification and should not be assumed to be part of its travel data plans.

3. Airalo — local, regional and global formats

TechRadar described Airalo as its global-plan pick, with local, regional and global offerings across more than 200 destinations and regions. Airalo’s help material requires an eSIM-capable, unlocked device. This format is convenient when one regional package covers several countries or when you need a local plan for one destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reviewed plans are data-only, so ordinary calls and SMS are not included. Check the specific plan’s fair-use and tethering conditions, because those can vary. A global plan can simplify a multi-continent itinerary, but a local or regional plan may be better value when your route is concentrated in one area; the only reliable comparison is the total price for your dates, allowance and destinations.

4. Nomad — hotspot support and regional value

Nomad’s support documentation states: “Yes, Nomad’s eSIMs support tethering / hotspot.” It also says some plans offer add-ons and that some include a local number. TechRadar presents Nomad as a value choice in some regions and notes that its catalogue and rates vary by destination.

Nomad does not offer unlimited plans according to that review, so estimate your usage and buy enough allowance for the complete validity period. A dated Europe price comparison in the review is not a current quote; do not reuse it as today’s price. Check the live plan for expiry, add-on behavior and whether a local number is included on the exact package you select.

5. Holafly — destination packages and monthly global tiers

Holafly lists plans in more than 200 destinations and offers destination-based packages alongside monthly global tiers. Its homepage describes monthly global options that include 25 GB and an advertised unlimited tier.

Terms differ materially between products. TechRadar reports fair-use speed reductions and tethering restrictions on certain destination travel plans, while Holafly’s monthly global product has separate terms. Never transfer the “unlimited” label from one tier to another: read the fair-use threshold, expected speed after a reduction, hotspot allowance and validity on the exact plan page.

Five additional names for narrower requirements

TechRadar also covers aloSIM, Airhub, FlexiRoam, GigSky and Firsty. The available material does not document their current destination catalogues, prices, hotspot rules and support terms deeply enough for a defensible ranking beside the five profiles above. They may still be useful for a specific route—some services focus on cruise or in-flight connectivity—but treat them as leads for destination-specific checking.

  • aloSIM: investigate when its local or regional catalogue matches your route; confirm whether your chosen package permits tethering.
  • Airhub: compare the exact destination plan and activation process; do not infer coverage from the brand’s general availability page.
  • FlexiRoam: check whether a route involving cruise or air travel is supported and how maritime or airborne connectivity is priced.
  • GigSky: verify the country list, validity trigger and device support for your itinerary before purchase.
  • Firsty: read the current allowance and speed conditions carefully, especially if a free or promotional tier is shown.

Choose by travel scenario

One country, short stay

Start with a local plan. Compare total data and validity, then select the provider whose listed network works in the places you will visit. A regional or global plan is worthwhile only if its convenience offsets a higher cost or unused data.

Several neighboring countries

Compare a regional plan from Airalo, Saily or another provider against separate local plans. Map every border crossing and island; “Europe,” “Asia” or another regional label is not itself a guarantee of complete coverage.

Multi-continent itinerary

A global format can prevent repeated installations. Airalo, Saily and Holafly advertise global choices, while Ubigi reports broad coverage. Verify each stop and the plan’s fair-use, speed and validity rules; a global label does not make every destination or network identical.

Working from a laptop or sharing with companions

Put hotspot permission first in the comparison. Nomad documents tethering support, but destination-specific rules apply elsewhere. Holafly restricts tethering on certain travel plans, and an unlimited phone allowance does not automatically mean unlimited hotspot data. Check the permitted devices and any cap before relying on the eSIM for work.

Needing a conventional phone number

Most data-only plans will not provide ordinary voice or SMS. Keep your primary SIM active for receiving codes if your carrier permits it, or use a plan that explicitly includes a local number. Saily’s US-number product is separate and requires identity verification; it is not a general property of Saily travel eSIMs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Estimate how much data you need

Use your phone’s built-in cellular-usage screen to review a comparable recent period. Separate background activity from travel-critical use, then add the data you will need for maps, messaging, photo uploads, work calls and entertainment. Disable automatic cloud photo backup, app updates and video autoplay when travelling. Download maps, playlists and shows over Wi-Fi, and set a warning before the allowance expires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy a smaller allowance only when the provider offers a practical add-on and the add-on preserves the original validity. If your work depends on video meetings or regular laptop tethering, choose a plan with explicit hotspot permission and enough high-speed data rather than relying on an “unlimited” headline.

Installation and first-connection procedure

  1. Before payment: confirm the exact device model, unlocked status, destination list, allowance, validity trigger, hotspot rule and refund terms.
  2. Install while on Wi-Fi: follow the provider app or QR-code instructions. Keep the QR code and activation details available offline in case you need to reinstall.
  3. Label the lines: name the travel eSIM by destination and keep your primary line clearly identified.
  4. Set mobile data: choose the travel eSIM as the data line. Turn off data switching so the phone cannot silently use your primary carrier’s roaming.
  5. Configure roaming as instructed: many travel eSIMs require data roaming on for the eSIM profile, while your primary line should have roaming disabled unless you intentionally want to use it.
  6. Test before leaving: connect to the destination network when available, open a webpage and check the provider app for remaining data and expiry.
  7. Keep account access: save support details and your order number offline. Do not delete the eSIM until the trip and any refund period are over.

Activation and connection problems

The eSIM will not install

Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi, confirm that the phone is unlocked and supported, and scan the original QR code only once if the instructions say it is single-use. If the profile is already present, do not delete it until support confirms that a replacement can be issued.

The profile installs but has no data

Select the travel eSIM as the data line, enable the setting the provider requires for data roaming, and disable automatic network selection if the instructions name a specific partner. Restart the phone after changing the network profile, then check that you are physically inside a covered territory.

Hotspot is unavailable

Confirm that tethering is allowed on the exact plan. A phone can show a hotspot control even when the carrier profile blocks it. If sharing is permitted, reconnect the laptop after selecting the travel eSIM as the active data line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speeds suddenly fall

Check the plan’s fair-use wording and remaining high-speed allowance. Holafly’s destination plans, for example, may reduce speed after a threshold according to TechRadar’s review. Congestion and local network conditions can also vary by destination; do not assume a speed reduction means the eSIM has failed.

Privacy and routing considerations

The company headquarters shown on a website does not identify the country through which your traffic travels. A USENIX Security Symposium 2025 presentation reported that many tested travel eSIMs use Home-Routed Roaming, in which data traffic and signaling are routed back to the home network for processing. The presentation gave an example in which a Holafly connection could route through China Mobile despite Holafly being headquartered in Ireland.

That is a profile-specific finding from a tested sample, not proof about every provider, plan or connection. If routing location matters for your work or threat model, review the provider’s privacy policy, use end-to-end encrypted services, and test the exact profile rather than inferring behavior from the brand’s registered office.

How to make a final choice

  1. List every destination and date, including border crossings and transit stops.
  2. Remove plans that do not explicitly cover all locations.
  3. Choose the data allowance and validity that match your measured usage, including a reserve for navigation and emergencies.
  4. Filter for hotspot, local-number and fair-use requirements.
  5. Compare the complete price in the purchase currency, including add-ons and taxes shown at checkout.
  6. Install on Wi-Fi, test the profile and save support information before departure.

Recheck the live destination page on the day you buy. Provider catalogues, partner networks, prices and terms can change, and the figures cited here are dated descriptions rather than permanent guarantees. A plan that wins on one itinerary can be poor value or unusable on another.
