If you mean services that replace cable with live channels, the strongest choices in 2026 are not interchangeable. YouTube TV is the easiest all-rounder, Sling TV is the value pick for flexible channel packages, Hulu + Live TV is the better bundle for Disney and ESPN households, and Philo is a low-cost entertainment option if you do not need local stations or major sports.

Prices, local affiliates, regional sports networks, blackouts, taxes, promotions, and supported devices can vary by ZIP code. Check the actual lineup and checkout total before subscribing.

1. YouTube TV: best overall

YouTube TV is the safest recommendation for a household that wants a conventional cable replacement without spending time assembling a complicated package. The standard plan costs $82.99 per month and advertises more than 100 channels, six household accounts, three simultaneous streams, and unlimited DVR capacity.

The interface is one of its practical strengths. To customize the guide, open Live → Sort → Edit → Live guide settings. On the web or mobile app, use Profile photo → Settings → Live guide. This lets you put frequently watched channels at the top instead of scrolling through the complete lineup.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote | Compact 4K Streaming Device for TV with Roku Voice Remote & Long-Range Wi-Fi - Free & Live Local News, Sports
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

The DVR has no capacity limit, but “unlimited” does not mean permanent. Recordings eventually expire. Adding a show to your library records current and future airings; if you add it while an episode is already playing, the recording starts from that point.

Sports viewers should know one unusually specific limitation: to record NFL RedZone, search for NFL Red Zone and add the RedZone result itself. Adding a team, league, or individual game does not record the full eight-hour RedZone block.

YouTube TV also offers a separate Sports Plan advertised at $64.99 per month, with 30-plus sports channels, local channels, Multiview, unlimited DVR, and three streams. Neither plan guarantees every game in every location. Rights, blackouts, and local stations remain ZIP-code dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose it

  • Simple interface and strong guide customization.
  • Unlimited DVR capacity without managing storage hours.
  • Up to four events in supported Multiview layouts.
  • Broad mix of local, news, entertainment, and sports channels.

Watch out for

  • The ordinary stream limit is three, not unlimited. Unlimited in-home streaming requires the 4K Plus add-on and compatible network setup.
  • Custom Multiview is unavailable in a web browser and through AirPlay.
  • YouTube TV cannot be used internationally, and VPNs or proxies can trigger playback failures.
  • While traveling in the United States, local channels generally change to those available at your current location.

2. Hulu + Live TV: best bundle for Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN

Hulu + Live TV costs $89.99 per month for the ad-supported version and includes the Hulu on-demand library, Disney+ with ads, and ESPN access. Hulu also lists a $99.99 Premium + Live TV option, which includes Disney+ Premium.

This is a particularly good fit for a home already paying for Hulu and Disney+. It consolidates those services into one subscription, although Disney+ and ESPN viewing happens in their separate apps. ESPN access is included at the specified tier; it is not automatically an unrestricted, standalone ESPN subscription.

The plan advertises more than 100 live channels and includes networks such as ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, NFL Network, MLB Network, SEC Network, Big Ten Network, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, A&E, History, Discovery, Hallmark, and TCM. The local affiliates and some sports availability must be checked with your ZIP code.

Unlimited DVR is included, and live-TV recordings can be stored for up to nine months. You can fast-forward through eligible recordings, but the feature does not remove ads from Hulu on-demand content. Even the Premium plan continues to show commercials on live channels.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus with Voice Remote - 4K & HDR10+ | 4K & HDR Streaming Device for TV with Roku Voice Remote - Free & Live Local News, Sports
  • 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.

Why choose it

  • Useful combination of live TV, Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN access.
  • Unlimited DVR included rather than sold as an add-on.
  • Strong selection for households watching broadcast networks and mainstream sports.

Watch out for

  • The standard plan permits two simultaneous streams.
  • Local stations, blackouts, and regional rights vary by location.
  • Hulu may require location data for certain live programming.
  • Premium reduces ads in eligible on-demand content, not in live television.

3. Sling TV: best lower-cost and flexible option

Sling is the best starting point when the full channel bundles from YouTube TV and Hulu are more than you need. Orange and Blue are each currently listed at $45.99 per month; the combined package costs more, and the final lineup depends partly on your market.

Sling Orange allows one simultaneous stream and is built around channels that are exclusive to Orange. Sling Blue allows up to three streams and has a different channel mix. Orange & Blue supports up to four devices, but those are not four unrestricted streams: only one Orange-exclusive channel can be watched at a time, alongside up to three other channels.

All paid plans include 50 hours of cloud DVR. Unlimited DVR costs an additional $5 per month. Some content cannot be recorded, including Local Now, AAC Network Extra, SEC Network+, Pluto, and local channels supplied through an antenna.

Sling Orange does not include local channels. Blue and Orange & Blue provide some local stations only in qualifying markets. This makes Sling a much better value if you are willing to use an antenna for broadcast networks or do not care about local news and sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why choose it

  • Lower entry price than the large all-in-one services.
  • Orange and Blue let you prioritize different channel groups.
  • 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes are useful for a short event or trial.

Watch out for

  • Sling currently does not offer a conventional free trial for its standard monthly service.
  • Passes end automatically and cannot be canceled like monthly subscriptions.
  • It recommends 25 Mbps for multiple devices; basic viewing requires at least 3 Mbps.
  • Count the cost of channel extras, DVR, and an antenna before comparing it with a larger bundle.

4. Fubo: best for sports-heavy households

Fubo remains a strong sports-oriented service, but it is not sensible to judge it from an old review or a generic national channel count. Its current offerings include plan-specific packages such as Pro, Elite, and Latino-focused options, with pricing and channels presented dynamically according to location.

Fubo says taxes and regional restrictions may apply, and its plan information states that cloud DVR recordings expire after nine months. Prices for selected subscriptions were reduced for billing cycles beginning on or after January 1, 2026, so older articles may show figures that are no longer correct.

To find a game on the website, select Sports from the top menu, then filter by sport, league, and date. The useful test is whether Fubo can show the specific game you care about in your area—not merely whether the network carrying it appears in the channel list.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Why choose it

  • Sports-forward interface and game discovery tools.
  • Plan choices aimed at different sports and language preferences.
  • Useful for viewers who want to browse events by league and date.

Watch out for

  • Regional sports networks and local stations are not guaranteed nationwide.
  • Taxes and regional restrictions can change the checkout price.
  • DVR recordings expire after nine months.
  • A network subscription does not override a local blackout or regional-rights restriction.

5. DIRECTV: best traditional cable-style lineup

DIRECTV is aimed at viewers who want a larger, familiar pay-TV package rather than the cheapest streaming bill. Its current Signature packages list Entertainment at 90-plus channels for $69.98 per month when the displayed $10 Gemini lease fee is included. Choice lists 125-plus channels at $89.98, Ultimate 160-plus at $99.98, and Premier 185-plus at $159.98 under the displayed fee and regional-sports conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These figures need careful reading. DIRECTV pages also show promotional discounts, possible taxes, a Gemini device lease, and a regional sports fee of up to $19.99 per month where applicable. Use the checkout total—not a first-month headline price—for a fair comparison.

DIRECTV offers satellite plus device, streaming app plus device, and internet-only streaming app options. A satellite dish is not required for the internet-only plan. The Gemini device can provide a single interface for third-party streaming apps, but those apps require their own accounts and subscriptions.

DVR or cloud DVR options are included at no extra charge according to DIRECTV. Local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and CW stations are included where available.

Why choose it

  • Large lineups for viewers who want a traditional-TV experience.
  • Internet-only streaming is available.
  • Gemini can combine DIRECTV navigation with other streaming apps.

Watch out for

  • Device leases, regional sports fees, taxes, and expiring promotions make the advertised price easy to misunderstand.
  • Third-party apps accessed through Gemini are not included subscriptions.
  • Local channels and regional sports still depend on availability and rights.

6. Philo: best cheap entertainment package

Philo Essential costs $25 per month and includes more than 70 paid live channels, more than 100 ad-supported free channels, over 75,000 on-demand titles, three simultaneous streams, and up to 10 profiles. Its paid DVR recordings can be kept for one year and fast-forwarded.

The lineup is entertainment-focused: A&E, AMC, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Hallmark Channel, HISTORY, HGTV, Lifetime, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TLC, TV Land, and WE tv are among the included networks. Philo does not replace a local-broadcast or sports package; it has no local broadcast networks, ESPN, or major national sports networks.

Philo Bundle+ costs $33 per month and adds HBO Max Basic with Ads, AMC+, discovery+, and All Reality. Philo also provides a free-channel experience without a credit card. Free recordings are limited to eligible titles and are retained for up to 30 days, so they do not have the same DVR treatment as Essential.

  • It works best alongside an antenna or separate sports service.

7. Frndly TV: best for inexpensive family and classic channels

Frndly TV is a specialist service rather than a full cable replacement. All three plans carry the same 50-plus live channels and on-demand library, with the difference mainly being video quality, DVR retention, and simultaneous devices.

Plan Monthly price Key features
Basic $8.99 50-plus channels; no DVR
Classic $10.99 HD, two devices, DVR retained for three months
Premium $12.99 Four devices, DVR retained for nine months

Annual pricing is also available: $83.88 for Basic, $95.88 for Classic, and $119.88 for Premium. Add-ons include Lifetime Movie Club, A&E Crime Central, HISTORY Vault, Up Faith & Family, and Great American Pure Flix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose at least Classic if recording matters. Basic does not include DVR, and Premium’s recordings are retained for nine months—not forever.

How to choose the right service

  1. Enter your ZIP code first. Check the actual ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, CW, and regional sports affiliates shown during signup.
  2. List the exact programs you watch. A channel logo is not proof that every game or event is available. Check the actual event for blackouts and regional restrictions.
  3. Calculate the normal monthly price. Include DVR add-ons, sports fees, device leases, taxes, premium channels, and the post-promotion price.
  4. Check simultaneous streams. Three streams means three active streams, not three profiles. Sling Orange is limited to one, while Orange & Blue still restricts Orange-exclusive channels.
  5. Check DVR retention. Unlimited capacity does not mean permanent storage. YouTube TV, Hulu, Fubo, Philo, and Frndly TV all remove recordings after a stated period.
  6. Check how you will watch. Test the exact TV, streaming stick, game console, browser, or phone you plan to use. Features such as YouTube TV Multiview can differ by device.

Important live-TV streaming limitations

Local channels

National channel counts are a poor substitute for a local-lineup check. The same service may carry a different ABC or FOX affiliate—or none at all—in another market. If local news and broadcast sports matter, enter your ZIP code on every service you are considering.

Sports blackouts

A service may carry ESPN, FOX Sports, a regional sports network, or another rights holder and still be unable to show a particular event. Home-area rules, regional rights, device restrictions, and blackouts can all apply. Test a real upcoming event rather than relying on the network list.

Travel and location checks

YouTube TV separates your home area from your current playback area. When traveling within the United States, local programming can change to the market you are visiting. It cannot be accessed internationally, and VPN use can cause failures. Hulu and other services also use location information for some live content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Billing and trial differences

Prices can differ when billing through an app store, mobile carrier, internet provider, or other third party. Promotional offers also have eligibility rules and expiry dates. Current examples include a three-day Hulu + Live TV trial, a seven-day Philo trial, and short-term Sling passes instead of a general monthly free trial. Frndly TV advertises a seven-day free signup path.

FAQ

Which streaming service is best overall in 2026?

YouTube TV is the best general-purpose choice for most households because it combines a broad lineup, local channels where available, a usable guide, three streams, and unlimited DVR capacity. Verify your ZIP-code lineup and sports rights first.

What is the cheapest live TV streaming service?

Frndly TV Basic costs $8.99 per month but has a narrow entertainment lineup and no DVR. Philo Essential costs $25 per month and is the better low-cost option for a larger entertainment package, but it does not include local broadcast networks or major sports.

Which service is best for sports?

Fubo is a strong sports-focused option, while YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV offer broad sports and broadcast coverage. The correct choice depends on the specific teams and games because regional rights and blackouts vary by ZIP code.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do live TV streaming services keep DVR recordings forever?

No. YouTube TV has unlimited capacity but recordings expire. Hulu and Fubo retain recordings for up to nine months, Philo for one year, and Frndly TV for three or nine months depending on the plan. Sling measures storage in hours unless you add Unlimited DVR.

The Bottom Line

For most people, choose YouTube TV. Pick Hulu + Live TV if the Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN bundle matters more; Sling if you want to spend less and build around a smaller channel set; Fubo if your priority is sports; DIRECTV if you want the broadest traditional-TV feel; Philo for inexpensive entertainment; and Frndly TV for a very small family and classic-TV package.

Before paying, compare the post-promotion price, enter your ZIP code, check the exact games and local stations you need, and confirm DVR retention and simultaneous-stream limits.
