AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning is good for Radeon GPUs, especially as a first tool for undervolting, fan control, power management, monitoring, and per-game profiles. Automatic undervolting is usually the best starting point; automatic overclocking is convenient but not guaranteed to deliver a worthwhile FPS increase. Results depend on the GPU, cooling, workload, and driver.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition is integrated with the Radeon driver, so most desktop Radeon owners do not need MSI Afterburner just to undervolt or overclock a card. Adrenalin offers automatic and manual controls for GPU frequency, voltage, VRAM, fan behavior, and power limits, although the available controls vary by GPU model, firmware, driver package, and installation type.
Key takeaways
- AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning is the best first tuning tool for most desktop Radeon owners because it is integrated with the graphics driver and supports global and per-game profiles.
- Automatic Undervolt GPU is usually the most useful one-click option because AMD defines it as reducing voltage while maintaining clock speeds to improve performance per watt.
- Automatic overclocking can improve performance, but modern Radeon boost behavior, silicon quality, cooling, and workload determine whether the gain is large enough to notice.
- Manual tuning can control GPU frequency, voltage, VRAM, fan behavior, Zero RPM, and power limits, but every manual setting must be tested for stability.
- Adrenalin requires the Full Install for its complete tuning feature set, while laptop and all-in-one owners may need manufacturer-provided drivers and controls.
Is AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning any good?
Yes—AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning is genuinely useful, not merely a beginner feature. Radeon owners get driver-integrated tuning, Radeon-specific monitoring, automatic undervolting and overclocking on supported cards, fan and power controls, and profiles for individual games. The strongest practical use is usually optimizing the balance between performance, power, temperature, and noise rather than pursuing the highest possible clock speed.

| Maximum benchmark score | Adequate, but not always ideal | Use detailed manual tuning and specialized monitoring if needed. |
| Per-game tuning | Very good | Create a profile for the specific game instead of changing global settings. |
| Laptop GPU tuning | Limited and model-dependent | Start with the laptop manufacturer’s driver and controls. |
| Managing AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs together | No | Consider a cross-vendor tool such as MSI Afterburner. |
What does Adrenalin Performance Tuning control?
Adrenalin Performance Tuning controls the main variables that determine how a supported Radeon GPU boosts, cools, and consumes power. The exact controls depend on the GPU and driver.
Automatic Tuning
Automatic Tuning provides predefined options rather than requiring the user to build a voltage and frequency curve manually. Common options include:
- Default: Returns the card to its normal configuration.
- Undervolt GPU: Attempts to reduce GPU voltage while retaining clock performance. AMD describes the purpose as improving performance per watt.
- Overclock GPU: Uses a predefined algorithm to seek higher GPU performance.
- Overclock VRAM: Raises memory frequency where the GPU supports the feature.
Automatic modes are convenient and generally conservative, but automatic does not mean guaranteed stable on every card. A successful automatic result still needs testing in the games and workloads that matter to you.
Tuning Presets
Supported Radeon generations may offer presets such as Quiet, Balanced, and Rage. Presets simplify the trade-off between acoustic behavior and performance, but availability varies by GPU generation. A preset is useful when you want a quick change; manual tuning is better when you want to control the exact balance.
Manual Tuning
Manual controls can include minimum GPU frequency, maximum GPU frequency, voltage, VRAM frequency, fan behavior, Zero RPM, acoustic limits, temperature or PWM fan curves, and the power-limit percentage slider.
AMD’s documentation explains that increasing the power limit can provide additional performance headroom when the GPU is power-limited. Raising the power limit does not create performance by itself: a card that is already limited by temperature, game-engine behavior, or another bottleneck may simply consume more power and produce more heat.

Metrics, profiles, and recovery
The Performance Metrics tools can show information such as GPU utilization, frequency, temperature, power, and fan behavior. Adrenalin also supports global tuning and individual game profiles. A game profile lets one demanding title use a different tune without imposing higher power or fan noise on the entire system.
The tuning interface includes controls such as Apply Changes, Discard Changes, and Reset. Keep a stock profile and a known-good tuned profile so that experimentation does not leave you without a reliable configuration.
Is automatic undervolting worth using?
Automatic Undervolt GPU is the best one-click experiment for many Radeon owners. The mode attempts to lower voltage while maintaining clock speeds, which can improve performance per watt and may reduce power consumption, temperature, and fan noise.
Automatic undervolting does not promise higher FPS. If the GPU was already running below its thermal and power limits, the average frame rate may barely change. If the GPU was power- or temperature-limited, a cooler and more efficient operating point may allow similar or occasionally better sustained performance. If the automatic target is too aggressive for the individual GPU, the result can be a driver timeout, game crash, black screen, or visual artifact.
AMD’s explanation of automatic Undervolt GPU tuning describes the goal as improving performance per watt, not guaranteeing a particular FPS increase. That distinction matters: the best undervolt may be the setting that delivers nearly the same performance with lower power and noise.
Why undervolting results differ between cards
Two GPUs with the same model number can have different voltage-frequency behavior. Cooling capacity, case airflow, ambient temperature, board firmware, power limits, driver version, and the game itself also affect the result. A voltage setting that works in a short benchmark may fail after a long gaming session or in a different title.
Lower voltage does not automatically mean lower temperature in every situation. If the GPU responds by boosting harder or sustaining a higher clock, the temperature reduction may be smaller than expected. Measure the result instead of assuming that a lower voltage produces a fixed temperature improvement.

Is automatic overclocking worth using?
Automatic Overclock GPU is worth trying when you want convenience, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed performance upgrade. The mode uses a predefined algorithm to seek higher GPU performance, while the attainable result depends on silicon quality, cooling, firmware, power limits, driver behavior, and workload.
Modern GPUs already adjust their clocks dynamically. A higher target may therefore produce only a small uplift in many games, particularly when the game is CPU-limited or when the card is already near its practical thermal limit. Extra power draw and fan noise can outweigh a small frame-rate increase.
AMD’s historical promotional testing should not be generalized to every modern Radeon card. AMD’s cited test used a Radeon RX 6600 XT, Ryzen 5 5600X, Adrenalin 21.9.1, specified games and settings, and testing conducted in August 2021. That test describes that test configuration; it is not a universal result for RX 6000, RX 7000, or RX 9000-series GPUs. The relevant AMD performance-tuning documentation should be read with those test limitations in mind.
Should you use automatic VRAM overclocking?
Use automatic VRAM overclocking as a separate, more cautious experiment. Higher memory frequency can help bandwidth-limited workloads, but memory instability may appear as visual artifacts, texture corruption, flickering, driver timeouts, application crashes, or subtle errors that are harder to diagnose than an immediate crash.
VRAM Overclock is not available on every Radeon GPU. Do not combine a memory overclock with a new GPU undervolt or core overclock during the first test. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify which setting caused a problem.

The general navigation path in a current Full Install of Adrenalin is:
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open Performance.
- Select Tuning.
- Choose Global Tuning, or select or create a profile for an individual game.
- Accept the tuning terms if Adrenalin displays them.
- Choose an automatic preset or select Custom.
- Enable the relevant section, such as GPU Tuning, Fan Tuning, Memory Tuning, or Power Tuning.
- Adjust the available controls and select Apply Changes.
- Test the configuration, then save a known-good profile.
- Use Reset to return the tuning interface to defaults.
Exact labels and controls can differ between driver releases, GPU generations, installation types, and desktop or mobile systems. Consult AMD’s Performance Tuning FAQ if a control is missing or the interface differs.
What is the safest practical tuning order?
Use a measured, reversible sequence rather than changing every slider at once.
1. Record a stock baseline
Run the same benchmark or game at the same resolution and settings. Record average FPS, 1% lows or frame-time behavior if available, GPU core temperature, hotspot temperature, memory temperature where reported, clock speed, board or GPU power, and fan speed. Run long enough to observe sustained behavior rather than only the first minute of boosting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Change one category at a time
Do not change voltage, VRAM frequency, fan curve, and power limit simultaneously. A single-variable process makes crashes and performance changes much easier to attribute.
3. Try Automatic Undervolt GPU
Apply the automatic undervolt and test the baseline workload. Compare performance, temperatures, power, and noise against stock. Keep the setting only if the complete result is better for your goal.
4. Move to manual tuning if the automatic result is not enough
Manual tuning is useful when you want a specific balance of FPS, frame-time consistency, power, temperature, hotspot behavior, and acoustics. Make small adjustments and test after each change. A lower maximum frequency can make an undervolt stable, but it can also reduce performance.
5. Tune the fan separately
A fan curve can prevent sustained thermal throttling, but an aggressive curve may erase the acoustic benefit of an undervolt. Set the curve for the case airflow and ambient temperature in the actual room, not an idealized test environment.
6. Test real games as well as benchmarks
A benchmark pass does not prove that every game is stable. Test the games you actually play, including a long session where possible. Different games stress shader units, VRAM, memory controllers, ray-tracing hardware, and power-management behavior differently.

How should you test a Radeon tune?
A tune is useful only when it improves the complete operating result without introducing instability. Compare the following measurements against stock:
| Area | What to measure | What a good result looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, sustained clocks | Equal or better performance in the games that matter to you. |
| Thermals | GPU temperature, hotspot temperature, memory temperature where reported | Lower or more consistent temperatures without excessive fan speed. |
| Power | Board power or GPU power over a comparable run | Lower power for similar performance, or higher performance within an acceptable power budget. |
| Acoustics | Fan RPM or percentage and, if available, measured noise | Lower perceived or measured noise at the same gaming performance. |
| Stability | Crashes, driver timeouts, black screens, artifacts, flickering, reboots, system errors | No errors during repeated benchmarks and actual gaming sessions. |
Do not call a configuration stable merely because one synthetic benchmark completed once. Test after the GPU has reached sustained temperature, then test several real games or workloads if the computer is used for varied tasks.

How do fan curves, Zero RPM, and power limits interact?
Fan tuning changes how aggressively the cooler responds to temperature. Zero RPM can stop the fans during light workloads, while a temperature or PWM curve can increase fan speed as the GPU heats up. Lower fan speeds may reduce noise but can raise temperatures and reduce sustained boost. Higher fan speeds may preserve clocks but make the card louder.
Power-limit tuning changes the permitted power envelope. Raising the limit can help only when power is the active constraint and the GPU has enough thermal and frequency headroom. Lowering the limit can reduce consumption and noise but may lower clocks or FPS. Evaluate the power limit together with sustained performance and temperature rather than treating a larger percentage as automatically better.
Driver-specific behavior can affect fan settings. AMD’s Adrenalin 26.6.1 release notes, dated June 2, 2026, listed a known issue in which Zero RPM could re-enable after a monitor was turned off or put to sleep on some RX 9000-series products. That release-note item is a dated example, not proof that every Radeon driver or GPU has the same behavior.
Which Radeon GPUs and systems support all the controls?
Not every Radeon GPU exposes every tuning control. AMD lists GPU Undervolt and VRAM Overclock as features available only on selected GPUs. AMD’s documentation also limits system and CPU tuning options to RX 5000-series and newer GPUs, and identifies GPU hotspot reporting on Radeon VII, RX 5000-series, and newer graphics products.

The complete tuning feature set requires the Full Install of Adrenalin. A minimal driver installation may not include the Performance Tuning interface.
Desktop Radeon cards
Desktop RX 5000, RX 6000, RX 7000, and RX 9000-series owners are the primary audience for Adrenalin tuning, but the exact ranges and controls still vary by board design, firmware, cooling solution, and driver.
Laptops and all-in-one PCs
Laptop tuning is more restricted and model-dependent. Hybrid graphics, shared cooling, firmware limits, manufacturer power policies, and custom fan controllers can prevent desktop-style control. AMD recommends manufacturer-provided drivers when a generic Radeon package causes compatibility problems on a laptop or all-in-one system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the laptop maker’s validated driver and control application first, particularly when the manufacturer provides performance, thermal, or fan modes. AMD also states that Adrenalin does not support handheld gaming devices; handheld owners should use the device manufacturer’s drivers and software. The AMD Adrenalin 26.6.1 release notes describe these compatibility qualifications.
Is manual Adrenalin tuning better than automatic tuning?
Manual tuning is better when you want a repeatable, specific balance; automatic tuning is better when convenience matters more than fine control. Manual controls let you decide whether the priority is maximum FPS, lower power, lower noise, lower hotspot temperature, or sustained clocks.
| Approach | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stock settings | Users who already have acceptable performance, temperature, and noise | No optimization, but minimal troubleshooting. |
| Automatic Undervolt GPU | Beginners and efficiency-conscious desktop users | Convenient but conservative and hardware-dependent. |
| Automatic Overclock GPU | Users seeking an easy performance experiment | May add heat and noise for a modest gain. |
| Automatic VRAM Overclock | Users testing bandwidth-limited workloads | Memory instability can be subtle and difficult to diagnose. |
| Manual undervolt and fan curve | Users optimizing noise, temperature, and performance per watt | Requires incremental testing and recovery if unstable. |
| Manual overclock and power tuning | Enthusiasts and benchmark-focused users | Higher power, heat, noise, and instability risk. |
“Better” does not necessarily mean higher clocks. A manual undervolt that preserves gaming performance while reducing power and noise can be a better result than a small core overclock that makes the system louder.

Adrenalin versus MSI Afterburner: which should you use?
Radeon owners should start with Adrenalin; MSI Afterburner becomes more compelling for cross-vendor monitoring, custom overlays, or a separate enthusiast workflow. Adrenalin has the advantage of driver integration and Radeon-specific profiles. Afterburner is useful when a user manages systems with AMD, Nvidia, or Intel graphics or wants a familiar independent monitoring and OSD tool.
| Criterion | AMD Adrenalin | MSI Afterburner |
|---|---|---|
| Radeon driver integration | Strong; built into AMD Software | Separate utility |
| Radeon per-game profiles | Supported | Depends on the workflow and configuration |
| Undervolting and overclocking | Automatic and manual controls on supported Radeon GPUs | Manual voltage, frequency, power, and fan workflows |
| Cross-vendor use | Designed for Radeon software | Useful for mixed GPU environments |
| Overlay and monitoring | Integrated Radeon metrics and overlay | Detailed independent monitoring and OSD features |
| Extra software conflict | Lowest when used alone | Can conflict if Adrenalin or another utility also controls clocks or fans |
| Best fit | Most Radeon owners | Enthusiasts needing broader or separate controls |
MSI’s official Afterburner page describes voltage controls, voltage monitoring, fan curves, power and temperature limits, on-screen display features, and OC Scanner support. MSI also advises downloading Afterburner only from MSI or Guru3D. Afterburner does not make an unstable tune stable, and running multiple utilities that attempt to control the same fan or clock settings can complicate troubleshooting.
What should you do if tuning causes a crash?
A crash usually means the current setting is not stable for that workload, not that the GPU is permanently damaged. Use the following recovery sequence:
- Wait briefly to see whether the graphics driver recovers.
- Restart the computer if the display does not return.
- Open Adrenalin and select the relevant tuning profile.
- Use Reset or load the default profile.
- Reapply only the last known-good setting.
- Remove or disable other GPU utilities while diagnosing the problem.
- If Adrenalin is malfunctioning, reinstall a suitable driver. On a laptop or all-in-one, use the manufacturer’s validated driver.
AMD recommends the AMD Cleanup Utility when downgrading to a previous Adrenalin version. A clean driver installation may help when a crash has left a profile or installation in an inconsistent state, but a clean installation cannot make an excessively aggressive voltage, frequency, or memory setting stable.
Why do Adrenalin settings keep reverting?
Settings can revert after a driver update or clean installation, after Adrenalin resets following a crash, when Windows replaces the graphics driver, because a profile was not saved or applied, due to laptop or OEM restrictions, or because of a driver-specific issue. Reverting is a troubleshooting condition that depends on the hardware and driver; it is not an inherent failure of every Adrenalin installation.
Why is a tuning option missing?
Check whether Adrenalin uses the Full Install, whether the GPU supports the feature, whether the system uses an OEM or reference driver, whether the GPU is integrated, mobile, workstation, or handheld, and whether another utility is controlling the card. AMD also states that only one GPU tuning control option can be selected at a time, so another active tuning mode may hide or disable a control.
Can Adrenalin tuning damage a GPU or affect the warranty?
Conservative tuning is relatively low-risk, but no overclock or undervolt should be described as risk-free or guaranteed stable. Excessive settings can cause crashes, driver resets, artifacts, and potentially unsafe operating conditions. Stop testing if the card shows persistent artifacts, unusual temperatures, repeated black screens, or other abnormal behavior.
AMD warns that overclocking beyond stock specifications can void applicable AMD product warranty coverage and may also affect a system builder’s or retailer’s warranty. The qualification concerns warranty terms; it is not a prediction that ordinary conservative tuning will damage every card. Read AMD’s official warranty and overclocking guidance for the applicable terms.
Who should leave the GPU at stock?
Stock settings are the right choice when the computer is already stable, cool, and quiet enough, or when the small potential gain does not justify testing and troubleshooting. Stock is also sensible for a work computer, a system used for critical tasks, or a user who wants to avoid any overclocking-related warranty ambiguity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Adrenalin tuning cannot overcome a fundamental GPU performance limitation. If a game is too demanding for the card, tuning may improve efficiency or provide a modest gain, but it will not turn the GPU into a higher-tier model.
What is the best Adrenalin tuning strategy for each type of user?
- Beginner: Record stock behavior, try Automatic Undervolt GPU, and test the actual games you play.
- Noise-conscious desktop user: Combine a conservative undervolt with a moderate fan curve and compare fan speed, temperature, power, and sustained FPS.
- Efficiency-focused small-form-factor user: Prioritize undervolting and power tuning over maximum overclocking.
- Enthusiast: Use manual GPU, VRAM, fan, and power controls one at a time, with repeatable measurements and saved profiles.
- Benchmark-focused user: Manual tuning in Adrenalin may be sufficient, but a separate monitoring tool can provide a more specialized workflow.
- Laptop owner: Start with OEM drivers and manufacturer controls because mobile Radeon features and thermal limits vary substantially.
- Mixed-GPU or cross-vendor user: Consider MSI Afterburner for a unified monitoring and fan-control workflow, while avoiding conflicting control utilities.
- Stable work-machine owner: Leave the GPU at stock unless there is a clear need to reduce heat, noise, or power.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does undervolting a Radeon GPU increase FPS?
Undervolting a Radeon GPU does not guarantee higher FPS. Undervolting may preserve similar performance at lower power, improve FPS slightly when the GPU was power- or temperature-limited, or reduce performance if the voltage and frequency target is too aggressive.
Is AMD Adrenalin better than MSI Afterburner for Radeon GPUs?
AMD Adrenalin is the better first choice for most Radeon owners because it is integrated with the AMD graphics driver and supports Radeon-specific tuning and game profiles. MSI Afterburner is more useful for cross-vendor monitoring, custom overlays, or users who prefer a separate enthusiast utility.
Why is GPU Undervolt missing in AMD Adrenalin?
GPU Undervolt may be missing because the GPU does not support the feature, Adrenalin was not installed using Full Install, the system uses an OEM or restricted driver, another tuning mode is active, or the device is a mobile, workstation, integrated, or unsupported handheld product.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AMD Adrenalin Performance Tuning is good and should be the first tuning tool for most desktop Radeon owners. Start with a stock baseline, try Automatic Undervolt GPU, measure the result in real games, and move to manual tuning only when you need a more specific power, noise, thermal, or performance balance. Use MSI Afterburner when you need cross-vendor control or specialized monitoring, and use OEM software first on laptops and all-in-one PCs.
